Family mourns couple who drowned while snorkeling in Maui
A couple celebrating their wedding anniversary and preparing for the arrival of their second child tragically drowned while snorkeling in Maui.

Georgia officials said they have located the body of a man who jumped off a boat and into a lake wearing an unsecured life jacket.
Witnesses saw Ramon Diaz-Soria, 27, leap into Lake Lanier in Forsyth County in the afternoon on Saturday, June 14, once the vessel came to a stop, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Law Enforcement Division.
With his lifejacket improperly secured, Diaz-Soria went underwater, but only his lifejacket floated to the surface, prompting a search, the department said. The Hall County resident was with friends on a rental tri-boon boat, the drowning report shows. Family and friends told officials that he could not swim, according to the report.
Officers searched for Diaz-Soria until it became dark, but they resumed their search in the morning on Sunday, June 18. Using sonar technology, officials located the body 60 feet below the surface by the evening, officials confirmed, adding that it has been sent to the local coroner's office.
Diaz-Soria's death comes a month after a body police believe belonged to Dustin Valencia, a 43-year-old father of five children, was also found in Lake Lanier. The reservoir is the largest lake in Georgia, and it contains over 38,000 acres of water and more than 690 miles of shoreline.
'A piece of me is missing forever'
Diaz-Soria's younger sister, Aby, said her family is in complete shock over the tragedy and has set up a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses.
"Ramon was everything to me. He wasn't just my brother — he was my best friend, my protector, and my biggest supporter. Anyone who knew him would tell you how kind, generous, funny, and full of light he was," Aby wrote on the fundraiser page.
Aby urged everyone to keep her brother in their thoughts and hearts to "keep Ramon's memory alive."
"I still can't believe he's gone — a piece of me is missing forever," she wrote. "This loss is truly beyond words. While nothing can ever fill the void he's left behind, we want to honor Ramon in the way he deserves."
As of Tuesday, June 17, the GoFundMe fundraiser has raised more than $16,000.
More than 200 people have died at Lake Lanier since 1994
Between 1994 and 2024, more than 200 people have died at Lake Lanier, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Law Enforcement Division.
In 2024, there were three drownings, 30 total boating incidents, 21 total injuries, and one boating fatality at Lake Lanier, the Georgia DNR's data shows. Suicides or medical events, including cardiac arrest and strokes, are not counted in any of the reported data.

The manager claimed the 'theft' amounted to $110 over a three-month period — which Denison said was the cost of some of his shift lunches, which he forgot to repay. The teen, who remained calm and compliant throughout, was then searched and handcuffed in the office, the video showed. He told the officer that he lives locally and walks to work every day. When asked if Denison had any of the allegedly stolen items on his person, the manager replied that before the meeting, the teen had eaten a portion of chicken in the break room. A GoFundMe launched Sunday on behalf of Denison by Kerry Campbell, a registered nurse in Florida, has already raised $28K for Denison's legal fees, transportation, cost of living, and food. A man ripping down anti-Trump signs from a Des Moines overpass sparks charges
A man allegedly captured on video tearing down placards from a Des Moines bridge that had criticized President Donald Trump has been charged with assault and fifth-degree criminal mischief, according to Des Moines Police. Footage of the incident, recorded during rush hour Aug. 12, shows a man crossing from the roadway onto the pedestrian side of the 56th Street overpass above Interstate 235. In the video, the man can be seen ripping the placards off the bridge, each carrying a single letter spelling 'TRUMP = HITLER', that had been fastened to the bridge railing with bungee cords. Police have filed misdemeanor charges against Bradley Jay Nall, 68, in connection with the incident. A person identifying himself as Nall started a GoFundMe page that references the bridge incident and calls for 'SUPPORT FOR PATRIOT STANDING UP FOR TRUMP.' The page had raised $240 from seven donations as of Aug. 20. A video of the altercation protest organizer Heather Ryan posted on social media has since been viewed more than 500,000 times. Ryan told the Des Moines Register that before the incident, the demonstration had been calm. 'We only got six people flipping us the bird. That's pretty darn good,' Ryan said. But tensions escalated when the man, later identified as Nall, approached the protesters, she said. 'He was yelling, 'What are you gonna do? What you gonna do? Who's gonna stop me, huh? Who's gonna stop me?'' she said. 'It was terrifying. … It was like nothing I've ever experienced.' In the video, protestors and the man identified as Nall can be seen shouting back and forth and exchanging curse words. Ryan said social media users and a license plate check helped identify the man, and she and another protestor went to authorities to press charges. In a video she posted Aug. 13, Ryan filmed herself leaving a Des Moines police station holding a case card and saying, 'simple assault charges filed.' She added in the video, 'I did not know until today that if somebody comes up on you aggressive and ready to punch you out, that's assault.' The Register attempted to contact Nall, but a number associated with him had been deactivated. And messages on the GoFundMe site have gone unanswered. The post on GoFundMe says: 'I didn't put my hands on anyone, I took the signs down. I am just an ordinary working man who took a stand against people who want to try to slander President Trump's name and malign him with Adolf Hitler.' In their news release, Des Moines Police said the two people who came forward to press charges reported that Nall "aggressively approached the group with the intent to tear down the signs" before he 'pushed a sign that one victim was holding, striking her in the head.' The department said it is continuing its investigation. 'They're harassing me, my job, and my family as well as completely innocent people who had old phone numbers and addresses of mine because the lunatics were trying to doxx me," the GoFundMe posting said. In a video update posted Aug. 14, Ryan said a detective assigned to the case told her the man had requested a meeting with protestors to apologize. 'He wanted a face-to-face interaction to apologize in exchange for us dropping the charges,' she said. 'But I'm just not interested.'
