QRSAM Air Defence System To Bolster India's Frontline, Nod Expected Soon: Report
Last Updated: The Indian Army may soon acquire a new indigenous QRSAM system, costing Rs 30,000 crore, for deployment along western and northern borders The Indian Army may soon get a new indigenous surface-to-air missile system. The development comes at a time when Indian air defence systems are making headlines for successfully bringing down missile and drone attacks launched by Pakistan in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. The proposal, which would cost Rs 30,000 crore, is scheduled to be taken by the Ministry of Defence for buying three regiments of the home-grown Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile system (QRSAM) for deployment along both western and northern borders, news agency ANI reported. The meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is planned to be held around the fourth week of June. The QRSAM, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is configured on highly mobile platforms and is capable of providing air defence on the move. QRSAM Features The Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) is a short-range air defence system developed to safeguard moving armoured columns from aerial threats. With an operational range of approximately 30 km, it complements existing systems like the Akash and MRSAM in the short-to-medium range category. QRSAM is equipped with capabilities for surveillance and tracking while on the move and can engage targets during brief halts. It features an active phased array surveillance radar with a detection range of up to 120 km and a tracking radar effective up to 80 km, integrated with Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) technology. The system is designed for multi-target engagement and can counter threats from aircraft, hovering helicopters, UAVs, and other airborne targets. Indian forces had not deployed air defence systems and missiles in active operations since the Kargil War. However, this changed following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, when India launched BrahMos missiles to strike terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Indian roads will match US standards in 2 years, says Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, said on Monday that India's road infrastructure will match that of the United States within two years. He backed the claim by pointing to the government's decade-long focus on investment in the sector. "The question is not about the facelift, it has already changed. You have just watched the newsreel, the main picture is yet to start. The projects in the pipeline are progressing rapidly. In another two years, you will be able to see that Indian road infrastructure will be similar to that of America," Gadkari told ANI in an interview, when asked when Indian roads would undergo a complete transformation. He added, 'Some people from America met me and said our infrastructure is better than America.' Improved roads lower logistics costs Gadkari explained that improved highways and expressways have reduced logistics costs, thereby enhancing India's export competitiveness. "If we raise our exports, it will improve our agricultural sector, manufacturing, and services, among all other sectors," he said. He noted that India has historically faced high logistics costs—around 16 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP)—compared to 8 per cent in China and 12 per cent in the US and Europe. "Our roads were not good, our ports were not good. Traffic congestion raised costs," he said. Major projects underway Gadkari outlined several key infrastructure projects in progress, including 25 greenfield expressways, a 3,000-km highway to boost port connectivity, and ₹1 trillion worth of roads linking key religious tourism circuits. He added that the government is connecting Buddhist circuits and the Char Dham pilgrimage routes with all-weather highways. "We are developing 36 tunnels between Jammu and Srinagar; 23 have been completed, and works for another 4–5 are underway," Gadkari said. "We are developing 15 ropeways under Parvatmala Yojana, besides 35 multi-modal logistics parks." Infrastructure: The backbone of growth Public infrastructure is central to economic growth, improving connectivity, trade, and quality of life. Over the last decade, India has made significant advances in this area. The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP), launched in 2021, seeks to bring together various ministries—such as Railways and Roadways—for integrated planning and streamlined execution of major infrastructure projects. India currently has the second-largest road network in the world. Its National Highways (NH) span approximately 146,000 km, forming the backbone of national transport. According to a ministry statement released in February 2025, the network has grown substantially—from 65,569 km in 2004, to 91,287 km in 2014, and to 146,145 km by 2024.

'Sensed Danger': Raja's Mother Says Sonam Asked Him To Wear Rs 10 Lakh Gold For Honeymoon
Last Updated: Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi's mother said his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi planned the trip to Meghalaya for their honeymoon, but did not book the return ticket The mother of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was murdered in Meghalaya, on Monday claimed that his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi asked him to wear gold jewellery worth more than Rs 10 lakh on their honeymoon trip. Raja Raghuvanshi was allegedly killed by men, hired by his wife Sonam, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, police said. Raja's mother Uma Raghuvanshi said Sonam planned the trip to the northeastern state, but did not book the return ticket. She said the couple had an arranged marriage and her behaviour was good with their family, so they never doubted her. According to officials, the couple left for their honeymoon trip wearing all their gold jewellery. Raja was reportedly wearing gold, including a diamond ring, a chain, and a bracelet, worth more than Rs 10 lakh. Uma said when Raja told her about wearing a chain, she sensed danger. 'I asked Raja why he is wearing the chain, he said Sonam asked him so. I sensed danger. There might be some planning…Her behaviour was good; I cannot believe how she did something like this," she told news agency ANI. Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang told PTI that Sonam surrendered before the Nandganj police station in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, while three other accused were arrested in overnight raids. Of the three arrested men, two are from Indore and one from Lalitpur in UP, the officer said. One more person was arrested from MP's Sagar district, said East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem. After their marriage on May 11, Raja and Sonam left for Meghalaya on May 20. They went missing while vacationing in Sohra area in East Khasi Hills district on May 23. Raja's body was found in a gorge on June 2. Uma Raghuvanshi said she was shocked to see Sonam's latest picture because there was not even a scratch mark on her. She said if her daughter-in-law got her son killed, then she should be hanged. 'I tell my son's photo that whoever did wrong to him should be punished. I want to hear from Sonam, where, why and in what condition she left Raja. If Sonam is involved, she should be hanged…I want the three men caught to be interrogated," she said. The mother further claimed that after the couple's engagement, Sonam did not spend enough time with Raja and avoided going out with him before marriage. 'When we had asked Sonam about this, she said she has a lot of work to do in the office. Sonam said if she is not able to call my son, then my son can also call her," she said. 'Sonam's mother had told me that her family is very strict against a man and a woman meeting before marriage and Sonam's father does not like such meetings." She said Raja and Sonam's wedding was held in a traditional way with the consent of the couple and both the families. 'My son was very happy after the marriage. He wanted Sonam as his wife from the bottom of his heart. We still cannot believe that she could get her husband killed. It would have been better if my son had remained unmarried as it could have saved his life," she said. First Published: June 09, 2025, 19:48 IST
