JD.com looks to international market for growth

Time of India3 hours ago

JD Logistics
announced on Wednesday the launch of
JoyExpress
in
Saudi Arabia
, marking the first time the logistics arm of Chinese
e-commerce
giant JD.com will operate its own consumer-focused express delivery service abroad.
Known for its self-built warehousing and delivery network in China, JD Logistics operates over 3,600 warehouses in its home country. JoyExpress extends this self-operated model overseas, and will offer delivery services as fast as the same-day in Saudi Arabia, according to JD Logistics.
The expansion may mark the first step in JD.com's renewed international push for growth, according to the company's founder and chairman
Richard Liu
.
Growth at home has been harder to come by for e-commerce giants, as consumer confidence hit by China's protracted property crisis and wage growth concerns add to deflationary pressures.
Liu held a sharing session in Beijing on Tuesday in which he emphasized the importance of the global market for JD.com's future growth and a likely acceleration of the pace of its overseas forays in the near future.
"We have been working in Europe for three years, and the logistics infrastructure there is now basically in place. However, it's still not enough," he said, according to local media reports.
Liu described the past five years as "lost" for JD.com and emphasized the need for the company to compete with Chinese food delivery giant Meituan in new areas, ranging from food delivery to travel booking.
JD launched JD Takeaway, a direct competitor to Meituan, earlier this year and Meituan has also expanded to Saudi Arabia in recent years.
"It's really regrettable that in the past five years, JD.com hasn't introduced anything new. These past five years can be described as a period of decline for us," he said.
Liu also revealed JD.com's plans to apply for stablecoin licenses in major currency countries globally. The goal is to facilitate foreign exchange between global enterprises, reducing the cost of cross-border payments by 90% and increasing efficiency to within 10 seconds.
Last year, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced that JINGDONG Coinlink Technology Hong Kong, a wholly-owned subsidiary of JD Technology, has joined its stablecoin issuer sandbox, which is a framework set up by the HKMA to convey regulatory expectations to institutions that are interested in issuing stablecoins in Hong Kong.

Donald Trump to extend TikTok deadline by 90 days

Donald Trump will extend the June 19 deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell the US operations of TikTok by another 90 days, the White House said on Tuesday, June 17. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the decision. She said 'President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok up and running.' Adding further, she said 'President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark,' saying the next three months will be used to work on closing the sale and ensuring that American users' data is protected. With the new deadline, TikTok will get more time to complete the sale, which is required under US law unless significant progress has been made. Trump says China's approval may be needed for TikTok sale Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he expected to approve the extension. When asked, he replied, 'Probably, yeah. Probably have to get China approval but I think we'll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.' In May, Trump had already indicated he would extend the deadline, partly because of the app's popularity with young voters during the 2024 election. What the US law says The law required ByteDance to sell TikTok's US assets or shut down the app by January 19, unless it showed major progress toward a sale. Trump, who began his second term on January 20, chose not to enforce the deadline and has since extended it twice—first to early April and then to June 19.] A deal was being discussed earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US business into a company controlled by American investors. However, the talks stalled after China pushed back following Trump's announcement of new tariffs on Chinese imports. In March, Trump said he was open to lowering tariffs on China if that helped move the TikTok sale forward. The app currently has about 170 million users in the US. Chinese nationals flee Iran by land as Israel conflict escalates

The first Chinese evacuees from Iran have started sharing on social media their desperate efforts to reach the Islamic Republic's borders and the safety of Turkmenistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan, as the Israel-Iran air war entered a sixth day. Several thousand Chinese nationals are thought to reside in oil-rich Iran, according to state media reports, highlighting Beijing's efforts to deepen strategic and commercial ties with Iran over the past two decades. "My heart was pounding but amid the haze of war, everything became clear: I packed my bags and tried to evacuate to the embassy," wrote a Chinese travel blogger under the alias Shuishui Crusoe, a nod to Daniel Defoe's fictional castaway, Robinson Crusoe. The travel blogger had decided to leave after sitting through Israel's overnight bombings last Friday when the conflict began, even as the embassy advised her to stay put. Emboldened by news of fellow citizens who made it across to Armenia, 750 km (500 miles) from the Iranian capital Tehran, she chose the same route, arriving by bus in the Armenian capital Yerevan on Monday, a day before China's embassy officially urged its citizens to leave Iran. China started evacuating its citizens from Tehran to Turkmenistan by bus on Tuesday, a distance of 1,150 km, state-run China News Service reported Wednesday. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said Beijing had not received any reports of Chinese casualties. "Seven hundred and ninety-one Chinese nationals have already been relocated from Iran to safe areas, and over 1,000 more are in the process of being evacuated," he told a regular news conference. While the embassy emphasised evacuation, some other Chinese netizens still in Iran shared video compilations showing an orderly scenario of well-stocked grocery shops and fruit stalls, with only a couple of clips of large purchases of bottled water. Most Chinese in Iran are engineers who moved there to work for Chinese firms that have invested just under $5 billion in the country since 2007 - primarily in its oil sector - according to data from the American Enterprise Institute think tank. If the regime in Tehran is severely weakened or replaced, Beijing loses a key diplomatic foothold in a region long dominated by the U.S. but vital to President Xi Jinping's flagship Belt and Road initiative and its aim to link the world's second-largest economy with Europe and the Gulf. China, the world's leading energy consumer, has also benefited from importing heavily discounted Iranian crude, despite Washington's sanctions aimed at curbing the trade.

OnePlus partners Optiemus Electronics to manufacture IoT devices in India

NEW DELHI: Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus has partnered with Optiemus Electronics (OEL) to manufacture premium Internet of Things (IoT) devices, including true-wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds and neckbands, in Noida at the homegrown contract manufacturer's facility. 'This significant milestone underscores the joint commitment to enhance domestic production capabilities in India under the brand's strong commitment to the market,' the companies said in a joint statement Wednesday. The collaboration has begun with the commencement of local production for the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z3, which is a neckband device. OnePlus said in the statement that the strategic partnership aligns with its long-term vision for India, and the recent 'Starlight' project to strengthen localisation efforts in the region. Under the flagship initiative, the brand has planned to invest cumulatively ₹6,000 crore over the next three years. Notably, OnePlus' smartphones are presently being manufactured by Oppo in India. Optiemus Electronics, in turn, said it will provide the dedicated support required to increase bill-of-materials (BOM) level localisation, reduce costs, and improve supply chain resilience for the brand. 'At OnePlus, India has always been at the heart of our journey. Our partnership with OEL to manufacture IoT products locally reflects our strong commitment to Project Starlight,' said Robin Liu, CEO, OnePlus India. 'We are driven by a vision to become the most trusted and valued electronics manufacturer. Our collaboration with OnePlus marks a significant step in this journey, as we come together to co-create a future shaped by innovation and excellence. We specialize in transforming ideas into reality, and this partnership empowers us to manufacture high-quality IoT products,' said Ashok Gupta, executive chairman, Optiemus Group.
