Assam: Gas leak continues at ONGC well after three days of blowout, 70 families shifted

Sivasagar, Jun 15 (PTI) Leakage of gas continued for the fourth day at a well of energy major ONGC in Assam's Sivasagar district, where 70 families have been shifted to a relief camp, officials said on Sunday.
The well has not caught fire yet, and no one is injured in the incident, he said.
The blowout took place on June 12 at Well No RDS 147A of Rig No SKP 135 of Rudrasagar oil field of ONGC at Barichuk in Bhatiapar. A private firm, SK Petro Services, was operating the well on behalf of the state-run 'Maharatna' company.
A senior official of the district administration said that around 1,500 people have been affected by the incident.
'They are getting the smell of gas and are not able to light their stoves or burn anything. We are providing them with cooked food and constantly monitoring the situation,' she said.
From the area of the blowout, 70 families have been shifted to a relief camp set up in nearby Bangaon, and all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure their welfare and well-being, the district administration said in a post on Facebook.
'There are currently doctors from the Health Department and the Animal Husbandry Department at the scene. They are examining the health conditions of both people and their domestic animals,' it added.
An official of ONGC had earlier said that it was an old crude well without production, and a perforation job was going on for zone transfer at the time of the blowout.
'It is a kind of servicing of the well. The production was supposed to start from a new zone after the perforation job. At the time of the incident, the logging perforation operation was going on. Suddenly, gas started coming out in an uncontrolled manner immediately after the perforation, leading to the blowout,' he said. PTI TR TR SOM

Indian naval ship INS Rana arrives in Sri Lankas port city of Trincomalee
Colombo, Aug 11 (PTI) The Sri Lankan Navy on Monday welcomed the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Rana, which arrived in the north-eastern port city of Trincomalee with 300 crew members on board for a four-day official visit. INS Rana is a 147-metre-long destroyer. It is commandeered by Captain KP Sreesan, the Lankan Navy said in a statement. Mizoram: 1,900 refugees from Myanmar, Bdesh registered in biometric enrollment
Aizawl, Aug 11 (PTI) More than 1,900 refugees staying in Mizoram have been enrolled in the ongoing exercise of biometric enrollment for people from Myanmar and Bangladesh, an official said on Monday. He said that the biometric enrollment for over 32,000 Myanmar nationals who have taken shelter across 11 districts of the state and nearly 3,000 Bangladeshis from Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) began in a few districts on July 28, followed by most other districts on July 30 and 31. The exercise is progressing at a slow pace due to technical issues and poor internet connectivity in remote areas, he said. As of Friday, district administrations have captured the biometric and demographic details of 1,947 refugees across 11 districts, according to the official. Although collecting biometric and biographic data of refugees who are staying in relief camps is easier, district officials faced inconvenience for children who study in Aizawl or outside the district where their parents currently took shelter, he said. He said that the enrollment exercise could also not be expedited for those refugees who live outside relief camps, especially in rented houses and those living with relatives or friends. According to the state home department, a total of 32,504 Myanmar refugees are presently taking shelter across all the 11 districts of Mizoram with Champhai district hosting the highest at 13,586. The number, however, keeps changing almost every day as some refugees have the habit of going to their country and coming back to Mizoram repeatedly, officials said. Although Champhai district, which has hosted the highest number of Myanmar refugees, began the enrollment exercise on July 31, only seven have been enrolled so far due to technical glitches with the electronic devices, they said. The district administration has collected new devices from Aizawl on Saturday, and the exercise is expected to run smoothly from this week, they said. Additionally, more than 2,000 Bangladeshi refugees also took shelter in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, 266 others in Serchhip and 63 in Lunglei districts, the home department said. The Myanmar nationals, mostly from Chin state, fled to Mizoram following a military coup in the neighbouring country in February 2021, while the asylum seekers from Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts came to the state after a military offensive against an ethnic insurgent group in 2022. The Chins in Myanmar and the Bawm tribe of Bangladesh share close ethnic ties with the Mizos. Delhi: 2 of 6 tiger cubs born last week in zoo die; 4 under close watch
ANI file photo N EW DELHI: Two Bengal tiger cubs have died at the Delhi zoo in the past three days, officials said on Monday, just a week after the birth of six cubs, the largest litter in two decades. The cubs were born to a seven-year-old tigress, Aditi, on August 4. This was her first litter since arriving from the Gorewada rescue centre in Nagpur. The smallest cub in the litter died inside the enclosure on the morning of August 8. Another, too weak to feed, was moved to the zoo hospital on August 9, but died the following night despite treatment. Zoo director Sanjeet Kumar said Aditi is feeding and caring for the remaining four cubs, who are under 24-hour CCTV and manual monitoring. 'Supplements are being given to the mother to support milk production. The remaining cubs are active and feeding well,' Kumar said as quoted by PTI. Before this litter, the zoo had six white tigers and seven Royal Bengal tigers. In 2023, tigress Siddhi from Gorewada gave birth to five cubs, the first Royal Bengal tiger birth at the zoo in nearly 18 years, but only two survived. The last litter of six was in 2005, when two survived. The most recent white tiger birth was in 2022, when tigress Sita delivered three cubs, of which two survived. Officials say survival rates in large litters are often low. The Delhi Zoo, which has housed tigers since its opening in 1959, is recognised under the Central Zoo Authority's conservation breeding programme as a centre for tiger conservation and breeding.
