Beneil Dariush explains how Islam Makhachev could be stuck in a lose-lose fight with Ilia Topuria

Time of India02-05-2025

Islam Makhachev
's potential fight against
Ilia Topuria
has sparked plenty of buzz in the MMA world, but not all attention is positive. While many fans eagerly anticipate the clash between the lightweight champion and the rising star, UFC lightweight
Beneil Dariush
believes Makhachev is caught in a lose-lose situation.

The crux of the issue lies in the expectations surrounding Makhachev, who seems to be in an uncomfortable position, whether he wins, loses, or even if the fight doesn't happen at all. Here's why Dariush thinks it's a tough call for Makhachev.
The high stakes of Islam Makhachev's potential fight with Ilia Topuria
has already cemented his status as one of the top
pound-for-pound fighters
in the world, with wins over former featherweight champion
Alexander Volkanovski
and others. So why is the fight with
, a fighter still building his legacy in the UFC, considered a potentially problematic choice for Makhachev? According to Beneil Dariush, it all boils down to the way fans react to victories and losses in today's "toxic"
MMA culture
.
'Islam Makhachev won't receive credit whether he does or doesn't fight Ilia Topuria,' Dariush told Inside Fighting. 'If the lightweight champ proved to be successful in that matchup, there would be a contingent of fans who would downplay his accomplishments due to the fact that he already beat Alexander Volkanovski on two occasions.'
Dariush argues that even a win over Topuria may not elevate Makhachev the way it should, given the fact that many fans may dismiss the victory as just another notch on the belt, given Volkanovski's dominance in two separate weight classes.
On the other hand, a loss to Topuria would be a huge setback, especially considering the expectations of MMA fans.
Makhachev also faces the pressure of an expectation that this fight must happen, something Dariush believes makes it even harder for the champion. 'It's like, 'Ah, you gotta fight this guy,'' Dariush said. 'The champion gets to fight whoever he wants kind of.'
Why Islam Makhachev might benefit from delaying his next fight
Although Ilia Topuria has made it clear that he will be competing at
UFC 317
, the timeline for Islam Makhachev's next fight is still up in the air.

Dariush suggests that Makhachev could take a step back and wait for a better opportunity, especially considering the lightweight champion just fought this year. 'He could wait because he just fought and he could wait a little bit and see who's going to be available,' Dariush said.
Given that Topuria is a featherweight and Makhachev has already fought elite competition, Dariush suggests that Makhachev could afford some time before making his next move.

Islam Makhachev finds himself in a difficult position where no matter what choice he makes, the outcome could be less than satisfying in the eyes of some MMA fans. Whether he fights Topuria or waits for a different opportunity, the Russian fighter's next move could have a significant impact on his legacy. It's a delicate balancing act between satisfying fans and managing his career trajectory as one of the UFC's most elite champions.

UFC 316: 'I just like beating people up,' says Kevin Holland ahead of Vicente Luque fight

This weekend's Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will see one of its most active fighters enter the ring at the Prudential Centre in New Jersey. Veteran Kevin Holland will share the cage with fellow old-timer Vicente Luque in a welterweight bout on Sunday. The event will be headlined by the bantamweight title bout between reigning champion Merab Dvalishvili and Sean O'Malley. Holland, who equalled the record of most fights (5) in a year back in 2020, will be back in action for his third fight of 2025. The mantra behind being active is simple for Holland. 'It doesn't matter if the fight is pay-per-view or fight night; I'm just happy to get out there and put one out for the people,' the 32-year-old said in an interaction with Sportstar. 'I'm annoying, and the matchmakers know it. So, they just book me before I get annoyed,' he added. From Khamzat Chimaev to current division champion Jack Della Maddalena, Holland has seen it all in his division. His upcoming challenge is expected to be extremely challenging. With 20 finishes in 23 wins, Luque could pose a strong threat to Holland, who has an equally impressive 22 finishes in 27 bouts. 'For me, all the fighters are the same. We think about them one way, but they get grapple heavy. So, I'm ready for his grappling, and his are pretty understandable, and I'll be careful about that as well,' Holland said. 'Don't think it'll be hard, and hopefully I've prepared right. I've been doing this for a long time. Regardless of the changes we make during training, what is important is to make changes on the fly inside the cage,' he added. Holland has been in and out of the top 15 rankings of his division, and three losses in his last five bouts meant he was pushed out of the table. A win would put him back into the top 15, paving the way for a shot at the belt. However, Holland emphasises that the UFC is much more than just numbers. 'For me, all wins are important, and I don't really stress on numbers. I just like beating people up. I'll just show up looking to win,' he concluded. Jon Jones might face Tom Aspinall in December at Las Vegas, fans speculate Dana White's absence from the presser The petition against Jon Jones to strip the fighter of his belt has reached the milestone of 200,000 signatures, which is quite a huge number. Reflecting on the figures, one of the reporters present at the UFC 316 pre-fight conference brought up the question to the lead commentator. While it feels like the UFC boss, Dana White, would have been a much better choice for the query, the lead commentator did not leave the fans disheartened and went on to predict the date and venue for the epic, highly anticipated bout between the fighters. 'So I think a fight between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall is much bigger if they are both champions. I think and I am hopeful that they are gonna fight in December in Las Vegas. I have no inside information.' Anik commented on the issue while reflecting Jones' unbothered attitude about the UFC executives ripping him off the belt, 'But I don't know if Jon Jones really gives a rip if they strip him.' Meanwhile, the fans have reached the saturation level where they are least bothered about what the Bones think and simply wants a heavyweight showdown.
