APSPCB holds public hearing for 1,200 MW Kalai-II hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh
Guwahati: The Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (APSPCB) on Wednesday conducted a public hearing for environmental clearance to the proposed 1,200 MW Kalai-II hydroelectric project in Anjaw district, being developed by THDC India Limited. The hearing, chaired by Anjaw deputy commissioner Millo Kojin, saw the participation of Women and Child Development minister Dasanglu Pul, THDC officials and over 350 project-affected persons (PAFs) from 33 villages. Pul, recalling that her late husband and former chief minister Kalikho Pul had initiated survey work for Kalai-I and II in 2009, said she was glad to see his vision nearing reality.
Urging locals to back the project, she cited Uttarakhand's Tehri dam as an example of the benefits of large hydropower infrastructure. She also assured that 50% of the project's employment opportunities would be reserved for land-affected families, besides boosting self-employment and entrepreneurship in the region.
With an investment of nearly Rs 14,000 crore, Kalai-II is expected to generate free power worth Rs 318 crore annually after commissioning, while contributing Rs 2.2 crore every year to the Local Area Development Fund. Officials said the project, one of 13 stalled hydro schemes revived last year through MoAs signed with four central PSUs, will create around 1,700 direct jobs and spur development through roads, healthcare, education and allied services.
During the hearing, APSPCB officials explained the clearance process, while THDC and its consultant WAPCOS Ltd presented details of the project's environmental impacts and proposed mitigation measures. While most speakers backed the project, concerns were raised by some over land rates, compensation, employment and local area development. Summing up, DC Kojin assured villagers that their suggestions would be reflected in the minutes and proposed exposure visits for two representatives from each affected village to Uttarakhand's Tehri dam.

Vijayawada: The state government is committed to resolving the issues faced by weavers in the Ramachandrapuram constituency, said handlooms and textiles minister S Savitha. She gave this assurance during a meeting with labour minister Vissamsetti Subhash at the state Secretariat on Thursday. Minister Subhash expressed his delight over the schemes recently announced to support weavers on National Handloom Day. She also mentioned the 'Netanna Bharosa' scheme, which will provide an annual stipend of Rs 25,000 to each weaver, a decision she said would greatly benefit the community. Minister Savitha affirmed the coalition government's resolve to address the problems of weavers and expressed her readiness to work on the issues of the Ramachandrapuram constituency. Minister Subhash was accompanied by several coalition leaders, party workers, and weavers during the meeting.

Cong readying to ‘plunder' funds under guise of Musi rejuvenation, warns KTR
Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Thursday alleged that the Congress government was preparing to 'plunder' public funds under the guise of the Musi River beautification project. The BRS leader stated that while the former BRS government, led by K Chandrashekar Rao, laid all the groundwork and prepared a master plan, the current Congress government has inflated the project's estimates to facilitate a massive scam. Addressing the media, KTR highlighted that it was the KCR government that brought Godavari river water to Kondapochamma Sagar, near Hyderabad, through the Kaleshwaram Project. He also reminded the people that in 2022, the KCR government approved a proposal with a budget of Rs 1,100 crore to bring Godavari water from Kondapochamma Sagar to Gandipet lake. KTR further explained that the BRS government undertook and completed the construction of 36 Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) to treat the 2,000 MLD (million litres per day) of sewage that flows into the Musi river. He said that the previous government also completed a 5-kilometer beautification stretch in the Nagole area and established a Shilparamam on the banks of the Musi River at Uppal Bhagayat. He said, while the KCR government prepared a master plan and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) with an estimated cost of Rs 16,000 crore, the Congress government has now inflated the estimates to an astounding Rs 1,50,000 crore, KTR alleged. He warned that the BRS would expose and prevent this 'plunder of public money'. He accused the Congress government of rushing the project to secure its position by sending 'money bags to Delhi', all under the 'beautiful cover' of urban development. KTR stated that the people of Telangana are watching all of this unfold.
