USC football countdown to kickoff—Sam Darnold in focus
The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 14 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC quarterback Sam Darnold. Position: Quarterback Years played at USC: 2015-2017 Career highlights: After redshirting his first year on campus in 2015, Darnold spent the first three games of the 2016 season as the backup to Max Browne. With the Trojans off to a 1-2 start, however, head coach Clay Helton elected to make a change and inserted Darnold into the starting lineup. USC lost Darnold's first start at Utah, but did not lose again for the rest of the season after that. The Trojans ended their 2016 campaign on a nine-game winning streak, culminating in an instant classic 52-49 Rose Bowl victory over Penn State, in which Darnold threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns. The following season, Darnold led USC to its first conference title in nine years, as the Trojans defeated Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship Game. That year, he also earned first-time all-Pac-12 honors and became the first USC quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season. However, the Trojans ended the year in disappointing fashion with a 24-7 blowout loss to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. After USC: Following his redshirt sophomore season, Darnold declared for the 2018 NFL Draft, where the New York Jets selected him with the third overall pick. However, he struggled his first few years in the league (as most Jets quarterbacks tend to do), and appeared on track towards being a career backup at best. Last season with the Minnesota Vikings, however—Darnold's fourth different team in seven years in the league—he finally had a breakthrough season. He finished the year with a career-high 4,319 passing yards and 35 passing touchdowns. After signing with the Seattle Seahawks this past offseason, Darnold will look to replicate last year's success in the Pacific Northwest this fall.

Fox Sports' Joel Klatt names this 2025 Alabama football opponent as CFP 'party crasher'
There's one opponent on the 2025 SEC schedule that the Alabama football hasn't had much trouble with through the years. Since the Missouri Tigers joined the SEC ahead of the 2012 season, Alabama has gone 5-0 against the Tigers. After posting a 42-10 victory in a heavy downpour at Faurot Field in Missouri's first year as a conference foe, Alabama's average margin of victory against the Tigers has been 28.6 points. Even amid the ups and downs in coach Kalen DeBoer's first season in Tuscaloosa last year, Alabama had no problem dispatching Missouri with a 34-0 shutout win at Bryant-Denny Stadium a week after their 24-17 loss at Neyland Stadium to Tennessee. Despite being unranked in the preseason top 25 polls, Missouri was arguably the quietest 10-win program in Power Four in 2024. The Tigers reached double digits in wins after closing the season with a 27-24 victory over Iowa in the Music City Bowl. That came 12 months after defeating Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl to cap an 11-2 season. Could coach Eli Drinkwitz's team take it a step further and reach the 2025 College Football Playoff? At least one prominent analyst believes so. On the Thursday edition of "The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast," the Fox Sports commentator tabbed Missouri as one of four CFP "party crashers" in 2025. In Klatt's view, Missouri gets the preseason nod over Oklahoma and Auburn as the SEC team that could "come out of nowhere" to snag an at-large spot in the playoff. "They have been highly successful over the last couple of years," Klatt said of Missouri. "They've recruited well. Drinkwitz has a culture at Missouri, and I'm a fan of Beau Pribula. I know that they haven't settled on a quarterback yet, but I saw him at Penn State last year. Hard for them to keep him off the field at Penn State." Pribula was the Nittany Lions' backup who entered the transfer portal with his team set to compete in the College Football Playoff last year. Klatt called Pribula's decision to leave Penn State as Drew Allar's backup a "difficult decision" made by "the stupid transfer rules." Nevertheless, Klatt is high on Pribula and loves the momentum of Missouri's back-to-back 10-win seasons, the Tigers' defense, and most of all their schedule. "They hit the schedule lottery in the SEC," Klatt said before pointing out that Missouri's conference slate doesn't include games against preseason No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Georgia, No. 9 LSU, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 17 Florida and No. 18 Tennessee. Missouri opens its season with six consecutive home games, including a matchup against Alabama on Oct. 11 at Faurot Field. "Guys, watch out for Missouri this year," Klatt said before asking, "Can you beat either Alabama or South Carolina, and then definitely beat A&M on your home field? If they can do that, then I think Missouri has a great chance to be a party crasher." Alabama vs. Missouri is scheduled for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff on Oct. 11. The game will be televised on either ABC or ESPN. Alabama football schedule 2025 Alabama, ranked No. 8 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll, opens the 2025 season against the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC. Florida State is unranked in either poll. All times Central. UNC football to face SEC program in CBS Sports' first 2025 bowl projections
Which SEC team is UNC projected to face in a bowl game? Can you believe the start of college football is almost here? We'll get underway with Week 0 next weekend, then UNC will host TCU to cap off Week 1 on Labor Day. Bowl games won't be played until December, but it's never too early to start making projections. Due to North Carolina's somewhat favorable schedule, North Carolina is slated to play in a bowl game. In CBS Sports' first bowl projections ahead of the 2025 CFB season, the Tar Heels are projected to face Florida in the Gator Bowl. This would essentially be a road game for UNC, as the Gator Bowl is always played in Jacksonville's Everbank Stadium, which is just 90 minutes from UF. North Carolina has six-consecutive bowl appearances, but a horrible track record in those postseason contests, last winning a bowl game in 2019 against Temple. Bill Belichick is a much-better head coach than Mack Brown, though, so the hope is he'll have his players prepared. Given their young roster, the Tar Heels also shouldn't have many opt-outs after their regular-season concludes. If UNC ends up playing in the Gator Bowl, it'd be UNC's second trip to the Sunshine State this season. North Carolina travels to UCF on September 20. Florida is in a similar spot to that of the Tar Heels. 2024 was the Gators' first winning season since 2020, which ended in the rankings and a Cotton Bowl loss. Last year, Florida went 8-5 and beat Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl, its first bowl victory since 2019.
