
Fake ads of public figures spark alarm
She told the Dewan Rakyat that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has lodged official complaints with Meta regarding the fraudulent ads.
She expressed concern that such scams continue to surface on the platform and noted that misleading advertisements using her image are still appearing on Facebook despite repeated reports, raising concerns about the role of platform operators, which appear to be acting as accomplices to such fraudulent activities.
'Lately, there have been many fake ads on Facebook. Although MCMC has issued notices classifying them as scams, Meta continues to allow the second, third, fourth and subsequent ads to be published.'

Cambodia PM agrees to ceasefire proposed by Anwar
PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has agreed to the ceasefire proposal with Thailand suggested by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post today, Manet said he agreed to the ceasefire because Cambodia did not initiate the fighting. "The key to resolving the current armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is the genuine willingness of the Thai side to accept a ceasefire, which is the first step towards finding further solutions between the two countries," Manet said in his posting. Manet clarified that there was unclear reporting by various international media regarding the proposed ceasefire talks initiated by Anwar, the current Asean chair. Manet said he only agreed to the ceasefire after hearing from Anwar that Thailand's acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, agreed to peace talks. But regrettably, the Thai side changed their position on the issue, he said in his posting. "However, it is regrettable that just over an hour later, the Thai side informed that they had reversed their position from agreeing to the ceasefire," said Manet. Anwar said he spoke to both prime ministers on resolving the ongoing conflict on Thursday. The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand escalated after soldiers from both sides engaged in a clash on Thursday morning along the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear areas. The two neighbours have been quarrelling over an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, which has harmed diplomatic ties. - Bernama

MCMC: Facebook removes viral audio clip for policy violation
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said that an audio clip, allegedly recorded during an internal meeting and widely circulated online, was removed by Facebook (Meta) for violating the platform's content policies. In a statement today, MCMC said the removal was made entirely based on Meta's community guidelines and content standards. The commission added that monitoring and investigations were initiated following public complaints. "MCMC takes seriously the act of uploading or sharing audio or video content without consent, especially when it potentially violates privacy, contains offensive material, spreads misinformation, or causes unnecessary distress to those involved. "We urge all parties to exercise greater caution when sharing content on digital platforms," the statement read. MCMC further cautioned that the dissemination of unauthorised or provocative content may result in legal action under existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

NST Leader: Low MyDigital ID sign-ups reflect public trust deficit
ONLY 2.8 million out of a possible 35.8 million Malaysians have registered for the MyDigital ID. This says a lot about their trust, or lack thereof, in digital platforms — particularly after breaches in hospital records and the recent Immigration processing chaos. With much-vaunted secure databases containing sensitive private information having been breached by ransomware hackers previously, it's understandable why the rest of the populace might be clinging to their MyKad as if it were the last vestige of their soul. Malaysian motorists have already surrendered their physical driving licences to MyJPJ, now carrying digital versions in their smartphones. And the Johor customs, immigration and quarantine complex chaos was caused by system integration issues. We shudder to think what a hack could do to the system. This won't help: AI chatbots, or the secretive technology behind these digital assistants, could exploit registered debit cards on pay platforms to "subscribe" without user consent. Add to this the billions bilked from victims of digital banking scams. Against this backdrop, the government is mulling mandatory MyDigital registration to address the limited voluntary sign-ups. MyDigital ID, designed for secure online identity verification, has been integrated into 82 digital systems, including 35 government platforms — with 17 more taking shape and 21 under deliberation. While the government maintains that these platforms do not store personal data, a successful hack remains a chilling prospect. Hackers, empowered by the unimaginable advances in generative AI, are resourceful enough to link breaches into relevant databases. While government digital security programmes are robust, aiming to safeguard national interests and citizen data, the most crucial element remains elusive: public trust. Mandating MyDigital ID, rather than addressing these trust deficits first, risks putting the cart before the horse. Recent breaches and system disruptions have scarred public confidence, making such a move unlikely to foster the very trust needed for widespread adoption. What's needed is a multifaceted approach prioritising enhanced security and unwavering transparency. First, to tackle the public trust deficit, focus on improving user experience and accessibility. This means creating intuitive and easy-to-use applications, reinforced with instant feedback mechanisms. Next, foster a culture of accountability and disclosure. This includes clear standards, methodologies and safeguards to anonymise mobile phone data, alongside strong governance protocols for sensitive information. Paramount are independent audits of data security and privacy practices, alongside vigorous reinforcement of the Personal Data Protection Act and the Cyber Security Act. Finally, raise allocations for cybersecurity measures and open data initiatives against data breaches and cyberattacks. These proposed initiatives can help build a stronger foundation of trust towards greater adoption of digital services.
