Assa's 5k effort capped an incredible indoor track campaign, which included a 19-second personal best in his 2-mile victory at the Meet of Champions (9:05.3) and a subsequent 2-mile victory at the New England Championships (9:04.6).

The progression for Assa has been even more remarkable considering as a sophomore two years ago,
'After the Meet of Champions when I ran my PR, and I was like, 'alright I'm in a different field. Now I'm more looking at national rankings rather than state rankings,'' Assa said. 'So I was just super excited to be able to get out here and get a chance to run at New Balance. Doing this well just makes it more surreal.'
The disappointment of the evening was that Westford senior Jack Graffeo scratched shortly before race time. Graffeo, who finished third at Foot Locker Cross-Country nationals back in December, broke the boys' indoor 5k state record earlier this season (14:06.49) and was the favorite to win Thursday's event.
Other notable Bay State finishes on Thursday included Lexington's girls' 4x800 squad of sophomore Callie Glenn, freshman Mackenzie Callahan, freshman Cecilia Kvaal, and freshman Amelia Whorton placing 12th (9:20.66), and Lowell's all-senior boys' 4x800 squad of Jovani Ubri, Raymond Dafe, Abdul Jalloh, and Alex Rodgers finishing 15th (7:52.32).

State Tournament preview: Eureka, Lexington, LeRoy, Notre Dame seek titles
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Four area high schools could be celebrating state championships this weekend. Eureka and Lexington are heading to the state baseball finals in Champaign. Leroy is headed to Peoria for state softball and Notre Dame to Naperville for the girls soccer state tournament. Eureka is at the state baseball tournament for the first time since 2013 when it finished fourth. The Hornets face Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin in the class 2A semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday at Illinois Field on the campus of the University of Illinois. In their last 11 games, the Hornets (34-4) have posted three shutouts and have only allowed 20 total runs. Pitching and defense have been their calling card, but having the big bat of Mason Stoller in the middle of the lineup doesn't hurt either. 'He's a big dude for us,' said senior Ben Lapp. 'He gets clutch hits in big spots, big hits. And he's good at base running too.' Stoller has 49 hits and 49 RBI in 38 games. 'Every time I go up to bat, it's see ball, hit ball,' Stoller said. 'When you get up to bat, you just can't think. You just have to go.' Lexington is at the state baseball finals for the first time in 35 years. Lexington won state in 1990, its only other trip to state. 'It's been crazy but we're going to win it all,' said senior Jaxson Goodrich. 'The last team that won the sectional championship (won state). That's what we're competing with, they won it all. We've got to do it.' Lexington (19-11) plays defending state champ Ottawa Marquette in the class 1A semifinals Friday at 10 a.m. 'The baseball fields have been dead for a while (in Lexington),' coach Tanner Schieber after his team beat Salt Fork, 5-3, in the super-sectional Monday to earn a trip to state. 'To get a crowd out like this. Hope to see them all again Friday morning at 10 A.M. Bringing Lexington baseball back is huge.' Leroy is headed to the state softball tournament for the second time in three years. The Panthers (34-5) will face Dakota in Friday's 12:30 p.m. class 1A state semifinal at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria. 'I feel a lot more comfortable going over (to Peoria) this year. Last time there were a lot of unknowns,' said LeRoy coach Doug Hageman. LeRoy finished third at state in 2023, the only previous trip to state for the program. 'Now we kind of have an idea of what to expect,' Hageman said. 'I don't know if that'll make a difference or not but we are so excited to be going back.' The Notre Dame girls soccer team is headed to state for the 12th time in school history but the Irish are still looking for their first championship. And although the team is 25-1-1, coach Ben Ralph thinks his squad still hasn't played its soccer of the season. 'We've been phenomenal defensively. We just need to figure it out offensively a little bit,' Ralph said. 'We haven't played a full 80 (minutes). Hopefully that's this weekend.' Notre Dame plays Springfield in the 2A state semifinals Friday at 2:30 at North Central College in Naperville. Junior Ava Lafollette scored three times in the second half as PND beat previously undefeated New Lenox Providence Catholic, 3-0, in the super-sectional Monday. 'There's a lot of mental toughness to stay locked in for 80 minutes. We focus on that. Especially (in the super-sectional),' said junior Abigail Chaddock. 'The first half didn't go the way we wanted. But we stayed locked in for the whole game and got three goals in the second half.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Westford's Ryan Kyle clears the competition, shattering his own state record in 400 hurdles at Meet of Champions
Squaring off against the state's top competition at Fitchburg State, Kyle left the boys' 400 hurdles field in the dust a stunning time of 51.72 seconds, finishing nearly two full seconds ahead of runner-up Luke Lamar of Pembroke (53.43). Advertisement Kyle's time shaved another half-second off his own state record, and obliterated the previous Meet of Champions mark (53.53) set by New Bedford's Aaron Araujo in 2010. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'These last couple years, I've learned not to put limits on the times I can run or the achievements I can get,' Kyle said. 'Once I beat the state record at the league championships, I knew I could keep climbing. I don't know if I thought I'd beat that time by a second, but it definitely feels good to do so.' Natick's Nolan Cloutier clears 12-feet, 6-inches in pole vault, finishing seventh. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff The other state record Thursday came from Sharon junior Nina Kyei-Aboagye, who blazed to victory in the 200 (23.28 seconds) to edge out runner-up Breanna Braham of Dennis-Yarmouth (23.63). The two sprinters both smashed the meet record of 24.31, which had stood since 2019. Kyei-Aboagye's time marked a half-second personal best, and eclipsed the previous state record of 23.32 by four hundredths of a second. Advertisement 'Breanna always pushes me in every race, so I just knew what I had to do today,' Kyei-Aboagye said. 'It really helps to have someone else at that level, because you know where you have to be. You know she's going to be right there.' Central Catholic's Arianna DiPietro clears the bar in the high jump prelims. Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff The punishing heat presented a major challenge for all the athletes, but no event faced a harder task than the 2-mile. Marblehead's Nate Assa knew the entire field would be weary of burning out due to the heat — and he planned to be aggressive early on. Sure enough, the race's moderate early pace played right into Assa's hands. He took the lead in the opening half-mile and gave it up, outlasting the pack in an impressive 9:14.52. 'I knew everyone would be kind of sluggish because of the heat, so I was really hoping to go fast off the gun,' Assa said. 'Coming off the turn 300 meters in, the clock was at 62 [seconds]. So I knew we were going slow, so I took over, and I led the whole race till the finish.' (Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff) Danielle Parhizkaran/Globe Staff After securing a double-victory in the 400 and 400 hurdles at last year's outdoor Meet of Champions, North Reading senior Giuliana Ligor entered her final MIAA meet with high expectations. But Ligor knew she could not enter the 400 hurdles overconfident, especially given the recent emergence of Weston junior Solana Varela — who lost to Ligor by just 0.3 seconds at last week's Division 5 meet. Valera broke well and held an early advantage Thursday, but Ligor slammed the door around the final turn to win in 1:00.06, with Varela (1:02.13) placing second. Advertisement 'She's a very talented athlete,' Ligor said of Valera. 'I was excited to race her here, because I know her talent and level . . . it's been good to have a buddy to push me all season.'
