With 'Thudarum', Mohanlal has found his groove just like Mammootty: Dubai producer Sophia Paul and fans rejoice

Gulf News29-04-2025

Dubai-based producer Sophia Paul, known for backing films like Minnal Murali and Bangalore Days, captured what many fans and industry insiders are feeling right now after watching Mohanlal shine in Thudarum.
'I had goosebumps. I felt a surge of emotions. It was such a pleasure to finally see Mohanlal in his element again," said Sophie in an interview with Gulf News.
She praised director Tharun Moorthy for understanding how to use the star wattage of a superstar like Mohanlal — something that, in recent years, even seasoned filmmakers struggled to do.
"It felt like a moment of validation and empowerment," she added.
Sophia Paul is not alone in her sentiment. With Thudarum, Mohanlal has delivered the kind of performance that reminds us exactly why he is considered a titan of Malayalam cinema. The film is storming both the Indian and UAE box offices, earning strong collections and universal praise from fans, critics, and his colleagues. In UAE alone, the movie has clocked a whopping 207, 767 admissions in just three days of its release.
Thudarum is a slow-burn thriller that plays perfectly to Mohanlal's enduring strengths. The scenes where he quietly unravels while coming to terms with an unimaginable tragedy are a masterclass in restrained, powerful acting. Without histrionics, he conveys profound grief — a testament to his unparalleled control and emotional intelligence as a performer.
For longtime fans, Thudarum feels like a potent reminder of the Mohanlal who once captured the pulse of Kerala's youth in films like Nadodikattu with Shobana — that boyish, relatable figure who could turn everyday struggles into unforgettable cinema. Now, seasoned with experience and gravitas, Lalettan taps into something even deeper, proving that true screen magic never fades; it simply evolves.
It's also worth noting how timely this resurgence feels, especially when compared to the stellar trajectory of Mammootty, his peer and contemporary.
At 73, Mammootty has been on an extraordinary run, delivering career-best performances in films like Kaathal – The Core and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam. His choices reflect an actor fully embracing his age, leaning into textured, meaningful roles that add to his already legendary legacy. Mammootty's recent work shows a man in perfect sync with his artistic instincts — courageous, authentic, and effortless.
In contrast, Mohanlal, at 64, seemed for a time to be searching for that same sweet spot. Some recent projects, like L2: Empuraan, with their designer trench coats, leather pants, and stylised avatars, didn't feel like a natural fit. It was as though he was being squeezed into a template that didn't quite honor the magic that made him beloved in the first place.
But Thudarum changes that narrative completely. Here, there are no gimmicks. No forced reinventions. Just a great actor and a compelling story — and the result is electric.

'Wow' factor: Why more UAE couples are opting for wedding drone shows

Last week in Dubai, wedding guests were treated to a dazzling spectacle as 200 drones lit up the night sky, forming scenes from the couple's love story — including a giant sparkling heart with their initials at the centre. Once considered a futuristic novelty, drone shows are now becoming a sought-after feature for couples looking to make their wedding celebrations unforgettable, according to industry experts. 'When we started, the idea of a drone show at a wedding was almost unheard of — it was considered a novelty for ultra-luxury events,' said Sarita Ahlawat, co-founder and MD of BotLab Dynamics, an Indian company that organises drone shows. 'But now, there's a rapidly growing trend of couples wanting to include drone shows in their celebrations.' Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. The company, which has done over a hundred wedding drone shows across different cities in India, is seeing the demand surging in the region as well. 'Indian destination weddings in the UAE, especially Dubai, have really embraced drone entertainment,' she said. 'We've noticed a spike in requests from Indian families planning weddings in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other destination locales — they want the same kind of magical show under the open sky. Similarly, we've seen interest in other countries in the Middle East and even Southeast Asia from where couples have reached out after seeing videos of our shows.' The 'wow' factor According to Sarita, it is the 'wow' factor of a drone show that makes it so attractive to couples. 'At the wedding party in Dubai, as the show started there was this collective gasp from the guests,' she said. 'The bride and groom were holding hands and the whole crowd was just spellbound. It's incredibly heartwarming to see an audience of all ages, from tech-savvy kids to elderly relatives, be equally mesmerised.' She added that demand for wedding drone shows rocketed after her company organised one for the pre-wedding show of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in 2024. The wedding of the son of Indian industrialist Mukesh Ambani was one of the most expensive ones ever in the world, estimated to have cost approximately $600 million. 'We flew 5,500 drones — which was the largest drone light show ever done in India at the time,' she said. 'That spectacle made headlines around the world. In terms of public awareness, that event was like flipping a switch. Suddenly everyone was talking about drone shows.' She said that pulling off a flawless drone show required a lot of work. 'It is a bit like orchestrating a symphony in the sky,' she said. 'It requires a lot of preparation, coordination, and precision. We usually prefer to start planning as early as possible, ideally a couple of months before the wedding.' Challenges Meanwhile, a local wedding industry expert noted that it will be a while before drone shows become 'a mainstream trend', primarily due to the prices. 'The cost remains a significant factor, making them accessible mainly to higher-end celebrations,' said Rhiannon Downie-Hurst, Founder of BrideClubME. 'Drone displays are definitely rising in popularity at luxury weddings for couples seeking that 'wow' factor and a truly unforgettable moment. It's important to remember that in the UAE, permits, venue restrictions, safety protocols, and choosing an approved operator are all key considerations when planning a drone show for the big day.' M.K.H., a Dubai resident who did not wish to be identified, said that he explored the idea of having a drone show for his daughter's wedding recently. 'The cost was eye-popping,' he said. 'It would have almost doubled my budget for the wedding. So we decided to stick to fireworks.' However, Sarita said that drone shows come in all scales and budgets. 'Drone entertainment has become far more accessible now,' she said. 'You can have a pretty magical show with a few hundred drones at a cost that is comparable to an elaborate wedding fireworks display or a high-end performance."

Chattels & More Has Launched The UrArtU Flower Studio, Filled With Blooms To Brighten Your Home

Chattels & More elevates home and interior design with the opening of the UrArtU Flower Studio, at its flagship boutique in Mall of the Emirates Floral storytelling has the transformative power to enhance interiors, homes and special occasions. That's because flowers and art are universal languages that connect people through colour, imagination and expression. Dubai's homegrown interior brand, Chattels & More, takes this transformative power to new heights with the opening of the UrArtU Gallery. Of it's launch, founder Gurgen Yeritsyan explains, 'Some of my most artistic and bold floral creations have been inspired by a deep connection to nature, art, emotion, and storytelling. Each arrangement is more than just flowers – it's a composition of mood, meaning, and moment.' The studio offers an experiential invitation to explore the possibilities of floral storytelling. Imagine texture, tone and unconventional shapes and colours blended together to reveal depth, character and soul. Each fresh or dried flower bouquet comes alive in varying shapes and sizes, curated according to specifications, and the occasion. 'I love creating arrangements that tell a story without words, using flowers to express different emotions: grief through dark, moody florals and trailing vines; celebration through bold colours and dynamic, upward movement; romance through delicate, soft petals and blush tones,' adds Gurgen. With creations taking anywhere from 15 minutes to 10 hours to make, and ranging from three to five types of flowers to elaborate or large-scale installations, there is much to explore within these mesmerising displays. 'Boldness often comes from breaking rules. Whether it's using unexpected materials like burnt branches, industrial wire, or fruit, or challenging traditional shapes with asymmetry and motion, I enjoy exploring the line between floral design and conceptual art,' shares Gurgen, who is known for elevating any occasion or space with his unique selection of rare flowers and unexpected non-floral elements. Often becoming conversation starters, some of these arrangements and exotic flowers include King Protea, Ranunculus and Fritillaria – each selected for its form, appearance or patterns to create artistic designs using twisted elements like branches, bark, seed pods, driftwood, fabric or wire art. Aligning with the vision of Chattels & More, this new collaboration offers customers endless options to enhance any space. A choice of art-inspired vases, with sculptural and seasonal floral compositions, is also available to experiment with. And if you don't know where to begin, you can request a made-to-order design, beautifully arranged in a vase of your own.
