"Skipper Looked In Good Touch": Arshdeep Singh On Shubman Gill During India's Net Session

NDTV18 hours ago

Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh offered some valuable insights about India's training session before the five high-stakes Tests in England, scheduled to kick off at Headingley on June 20. Arshdeep has been infused into India's Test squad ahead of Harshit Rana and Mohammed Shami for India's first assignment of the new World Test Championship cycle. The left-armer, who has formed a revamped bowling quartet alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, has been testing India batters during the nets session while trying to find his rhythm.
During the recent session, he bowled against the newly crowned Test captain, Shubman Gill, and young Sai Sudharsan, a challenge he relished and hopes to continue with for a long time.
"There was a lot of competitiveness with the batters. We enjoyed it. As bowlers, we had to grind and make proper plans to get the batter out. Sai, who has joined the team for the first time, looked compact. The skipper looked in good touch. I will try the banter keeps on going, and I dismiss them a lot of times," Arshdeep said in a video posted by the BCCI.
For the 26-year-old, the motive was to bring the body back to rhythm according to the demands of the Test format after an elongated patch in white-ball cricket.
"The main motive was to bring the body to rhythm. To get a feel of how the red ball was coming out of the hand, because a lot of players were playing white-ball cricket for a long time. As we go ahead, the intensity will increase, and we will try to make it hard for batters to face the ball," he added.
A sense of familiarity surrounds Arshdeep, considering his past exploits in the County Championship. After a 17-wicket campaign in the IPL 2023, he signed for Kent and scalped 13 wickets from five matches at 41.76.
With the backdrop of his past stint, Arshdeep is in line to earn his maiden cap and bowl alongside the current "best in the world", Jasprit Bumrah. While the feeling of being the best continues to exist within him, Arshdeep doesn't want to stray away from the main objective: improving each other's skills.
"Whenever I pick up the ball, I feel I am the best. But when a player like Jasprit Bumrah plays in an attack, there is no room for comparison. The main focus is improving each other's skill set and helping the team," he said.
India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

Labuschagne elevation tactical, says Cummins ahead of Test clash with SAfrica

London, June 10 (UNI) Marnus Labuschagne's elevation to opener has become the focal point of Australia's reshuffled batting order, with captain Pat Cummins backing the move as both tactical and timely ahead of their Test clash with South Africa. 'We love when they're busy and they're putting pressure back on the bowlers and that's our message here to Marnus,' Cummins said on the eve of the match. 'Opening the batting can be tough, but it can also be sometimes the best time to bat here before the Dukes ball actually starts swinging. There's runs to be scored there, so just keeping that positive intent I think is when he's batting his best.' Labuschagne's move comes alongside a promotion for Cameron Green to the crucial No. 3 slot, following a strong return to form. 'Cam Green, the last few weeks he's had, coming back in great form – we thought he deserved a spot in the batting line-up,' Cummins explained. 'We thought three probably suits him best. And then, with Marnus moving, we thought it's one spot up really. It's not too different to batting three. He's done well here in England in the past.' Cummins also praised the selectors for standing by players who have delivered in key moments, particularly in reference to Green's past performances. 'I think our selectors are probably showing that they're happy to give someone an extra little run rather than pull the pin too early,' he said. 'He's played some crucial knocks in getting us here. Look back at the MCG (against India], his batting was right up there as a difference in that match. I think it's part rewarding those guys who have got us here.' With conditions in England markedly different from home, Cummins noted the growing challenge for top-order batters worldwide. 'I do believe the wickets in Australia have been as hard as they've ever been, probably, in Test cricket for the top order. But I think it's similar conversations to Davey Warner over here. I think it's more about the style and how they go about it.' He also acknowledged the uncertainties posed by South Africa's relatively unfamiliar bowling line-up, aside from established threats. 'There's a few more unknowns going into the Test match, which is exciting,' Cummins said. 'We're going to have to problem-solve on our feet a bit more. Rabada and (Keshav) Maharaj have been around for a fair while now and been successful. They're an obvious threat, but some of those younger or newer guys in the team that we haven't seen before – we're going to have to be pretty sharp on.' South African skipper Temba Bavuma, for his part, believes the English conditions may play into their hands. 'I think there is an opportunity there,' Bavuma said. 'I think the conditions as well, I believe, bring us into the game a lot. With the swinging ball, it's very different to Australian conditions. Different to South African conditions as well. So that definitely gives us an opportunity.' Bavuma agreed that both teams possess potent bowling units, but said the contest could be decided by the effectiveness of their batting. 'I think both teams have formidable bowling attacks. I think the real opportunity is within the two batting lineups and how they are able to kind of front up and give their bowlers a score to bowl at.' As Australia eye another big-stage performance, Cummins said his players are embracing the moment, not fearing it. 'With some success you just want to experience more of it and that means when the going gets tough or the pressure is on, you embrace that,' he said. 'You take it on. You want to be the match winner. Hopefully you don't get overwhelmed by big moments.' 'That's been most of the conversation this week,' Cummins added. 'The guys just have excitement. They want to get out there. They want to play well. They want to win. There's no fear of failure or if it doesn't pan out.' UNI BDN RN

South Africa vs Australia, WTC final: Lord's, London – Pitch report, weather forecast, AI predictions and more

South Africa will lock horns with Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final on Wednesday day (June 11). The clash will be played at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London. While the defending champions Australia will want to reclaim the title, South Africa will seek to clinch their first WTC trophy. The deck at the Lord's will help the pacers in the beginning, however, it is expected to be on the drier side as the game progresses and therefore will assist the spinners. If the batters manage to put runs on the board in the initial overs without losing wickets, then the pitch will be favourable for them to register a good total. According to AccuWeather, the temperature in London will hover around 20 degrees Celsius at the beginning of the game and will increase to 23 degrees Celsius by the end. The sky is expected to be partly sunny throughout the match duration and there is a negligible chance of rain. Total matches played: 147 Matches won by batting first: 53 Matches won by batting second: 43 Highest team total: 729/6 by Australia vs England Lowest team total: 38/10 by Ireland vs England Highest total successfully chased: 344/1 by West Indies vs England Lowest total defended: 62/10 by England vs Australia Matches ending in a draw: 4 Matches ending in a draw: 15 Matches won by South Africa: 26 Matches won by Australia: 54 Matches ended in a draw: 21 Australia and South Africa have faced each other thrice in neutral Tests, with all three played in 1912. Australia won two of those Tests at Manchester and Lord's. The third at Nottingham ended in a draw. Australia will win the 2025 WTC Final against South Africa. Steve Smith is likely to score the most runs and Pat Cummins will take the most wickets. Australia's experience at the Lord's and current form gives them an edge. Smith's recent five centuries and Cummins' 6/45 in Sydney back their dominance, despite South Africa's strong pace attack. Australia are favourites to win the WTC Final 2025 at Lord's, thanks to their experienced pace attack and strong batting depth. Steve Smith is likely to score the most runs, given his stellar record in English conditions. Pat Cummins is expected to take the most wickets, exploiting Lord's swing-friendly pitch. South Africa may fight hard, but Australia's balance and familiarity with the venue give them a clear edge.
