UEFA President rejects proposal for 64-team World Cup in 2030
Čeferin responded to a question about the proposal raised at the FIFA Council meeting on March 5, stating, «This proposal might surprise me more than it surprises you. I think it's a bad idea».
This proposal was put forward by the President of the Uruguayan Football Association, Ignacio Alonso, even though the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will already expand the number of teams from 32 to 48.
FIFA, in turn, referred to the proposal as «spontaneous» and confirmed that it would analyze it, but did not reveal the stance of its President, Gianni Infantino, on the matter.
The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with three celebratory matches marking the centenary of the World Cup to be held in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
Čeferin emphasized that expanding the tournament is not in the best interest of the World Cup or its qualifying rounds, stating, «I think this is not good for the tournament itself, nor is it suitable for our qualification system», and pointed out that each continental federation is responsible for organizing its qualifiers.

Houcine Ammouta Parts Ways with Al Jazira
Al Jazira have confirmed the departure of head coach Houcine Ammouta following the club's defeat to Khorfakkan. The Emirati side announced the termination of his contract this week, thanking Ammouta and his backroom staff for their work and wishing them success in the future. The loss to Khorfakkan, in which Moroccan forward Tarik Tissoudali scored once and provided two assists, appears to have been a decisive factor. Ammouta joined Al Jazira in the summer of 2024 on a two-year deal, aiming to restore the club to the top of Emirati football. His spell, however, ends less than a year later. The 55-year-old has enjoyed a notable coaching career. With Jordan, he guided the national team to their first AFC Asian Cup final in 2023 and helped them top their World Cup qualifying group, laying the groundwork for the 2026 qualifiers and the 2027 Asian Cup. His approach, based on possession, high pressing and quick transitions, proved highly effective, bringing the best out of players such as Musa Al-Tamari and Yazan Al-Naimat. He stepped down from the Jordan post in June 2024 for personal reasons. His successor, Jamal Sellami, later led the side to their first World Cup qualification, building on the foundations Ammouta left behind. Tags: Al JaziraAmmoutaUAE

Real Madrid Stand Tall at Top of UEFA Rankings
Real Madrid continue to assert their dominance in European football, holding the number one spot in UEFA's club rankings ahead of the new season. The Spanish giants have long been synonymous with Champions League success, their record 15 titles putting them well ahead of any rival. UEFA's club rankings, which track performance over five seasons, highlight just how consistently the men in white have performed on the continental stage. Real Madrid are the top-ranked club. According to UEFA's official website, Real Madrid's points over the past four seasons read 30, 29, 34 and 24.5, bringing their total to 117.5 points heading into the upcoming campaign. Their nearest challengers are Bayern Munich with 108.25 points, followed by Inter Milan on 107.25. Barcelona are the highest-placed Spanish side after Real, sitting ninth with 83.25 points. Last season marked a relative low for Real, as they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Arsenal, the weakest contribution in their five-year tally. Los Blancos will now aim to return to their usual standard and push deeper in the Champions League next season. Tags: Real MadridUEFA champions league

Barcelona Hit with UEFA Ban: Flick To Miss Opener
Barcelona will be without coach Hansi Flick and assistant Marcus Sorg for their opening Champions League match after UEFA handed both a one-game ban and a €20,000 fine. The sanction follows their conduct during last season's semi-final defeat to Inter Milan. Barcelona felt several key decisions, particularly in extra time, went against them and this prompted heated protests from Flick and Sorg both on the touchline and in the post-match press conference. UEFA cited breaches of its disciplinary rules, specifically Article 11, which demands respect, fairness and sportsmanship from all participants. The governing body said the pair had 'broken the general principles of conduct' and 'violated the basic rules of decent conduct.' Yamal and Raphinha were also sanctioned for 'failing to report immediately to the Doping Control Post' following the match. The good news for Barcelona is that both players escaped a match ban and were each fined €5,000 ($5,825). The Spanish giants will be eager to move on from their heartbreaking defeat at the San Siro. Barcelona believed they had secured a place in the Champions League final after Raphinha scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute, only to concede a stoppage-time equaliser and then Davide Frattesi's winner in extra time. The Catalans went on to claim a domestic treble, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. Still, they have made clear that their ultimate aim is to bring European glory back to Catalonia. Flick's team will have their chance at redemption when the 2025–26 Champions League group stage kicks off in September, but they will have to do so without their manager on the touchline for the opening game.
