Irish missionary kidnapped in Haiti orphanage raid with 8 others
The attack targeted the Sainte-Helene orphanage in Kenscoff, approximately 10 kilometres southeast of Port-au-Prince.
Gena Heraty, an Irish national who has managed the facility since 1993, was among those abducted.
The orphanage, run by the humanitarian group 'Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs,' provides care for up to 270 children.
Kenscoff Mayor Masillon Jean described the incident as a 'planned act,' stating that the attackers breached a wall to enter the property before seizing nine hostages.
No gunfire was reported during the raid.
A source close to the organisation confirmed that Heraty contacted them early Sunday to verify her abduction.
No ransom demands have been made public.
Heraty becomes the latest foreign missionary targeted in Haiti's escalating gang violence.
In 2021, two French priests were kidnapped and later released, while 17 American and Canadian missionaries were held hostage by the same gang.
The 'Viv Ansanm' gang, active in Kenscoff, has intensified its control over the region.
The UN reports over 3,141 deaths in Haiti this year due to gang-related violence, deepening the nation's instability. – AFP

A friend, who has been organising the search for Lisa, stated on social media at 12.55pm that 'Lisa's body was found this morning. Thanks for the support of all those who have been looking for her or offering help.' Cambodian police are investigating the cause of her death. Lisa had arrived in Cambodia in 2024 after hitchhiking over four months from Paris to Phnom Penh, passing through 15 countries. Brazilian judge places ex-president Bolsonaro under house arrest
BRASÍLIA: A Brazilian judge on Monday placed former president Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest for breaking a social media ban, escalating a dramatic standoff between the court and the far-right politician accused of plotting a coup. Bolsonaro, an ally of US President Donald Trump, is on trial at the Supreme Court for allegedly plotting to cling onto power after losing the 2022 elections to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Last month, he was ordered to wear an ankle bracelet and barred from using social media after being accused of trying to disrupt the trial with fiery speeches shared online by his sons and allies. Under the ban, third parties are barred from sharing his public remarks. On Sunday, allies of Bolsonaro, 70, defied the court order by broadcasting a live call between the former army captain and his son at a solidarity rally in Rio de Janeiro, one of several held across Brazil. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes reacted furiously, declaring Monday that the judiciary would not allow a defendant to "treat it like a fool" because of his "political and economic power." Couple in Ford Mustang dies after crash into power poles near Segamat
SEGAMAT: A married couple died tragically after the car they were travelling in skidded and crashed into power poles at KM13 of Jalan Segamat-Kuantan on Monday (August 4) evening. Segamat police chief Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the accident is believed to have occurred when a Ford Mustang driven by the 50-year-old local man and his 30-year-old wife was heading towards Segamat. He said the driver lost control of the classic American automobile which skidded and veered left, then hit two electric poles whereby both victims suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. 'The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and further investigations are still being carried out. Anyone with related information can contact the (traffic division of) Segamat police headquarters,' he said in a statement. Meanwhile, Segamat fire and rescue station operations commander Senior Fire Officer (PBK) Abd Rahim Taufik said after receiving a distress call at 1.46 pm, a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) with six personnel was dispatched to the scene. 'On arrival at the accident scene, the operations team had to extricate the two victims in the car using special equipment. 'Both victims, Mohd Izuddin Harmaini, 51, and Nur Syamimi Rosli, 36, were pronounced dead,' he said, adding that their bodies were handed over to police for further action and the operation ended at 3.36 pm. - Bernama
