Chinese research ship detected off Alaskan coast, Coast Guard says
The Coast Guard reported Saturday that the Xue Long 2, an icebreaker, was detected about 290 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik, Alaska, in the North American Arctic.
The Xue Long 2 is operated by China's Polar Research Institute.
The ship was in the U.S.'s Extended Continental Shelf, or ECS, which is a portion of the continental shelf that goes beyond 200 miles nautical miles off the coast, according to the State Department. The ship was determined to be 130 nautical miles inside the ECS.
"The U.S. has exclusive rights to conserve and manage the living and non-living resources of its ECS," the Coast Guard said in its news release.
A Coast Guard C-130J Hercules, a long-range surveillance aircraft, responded to the ship. The Coast Guard also released a photo of the vessel.
"The U.S. Coast Guard, alongside partners and other agencies, vigilantly monitors and responds to foreign government vessel activity in and near U.S. waters to secure territorial integrity and defend sovereign interests against malign state activity," said Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District, in a statement.
CBS News reached out the Coast Guard for clarification on how it was dealing with the vessel.
Earlier this week, Canada's CBC News reported that the Canadian military was monitoring the movements of the Xue Long 2 in the Arctic.
In a statement provided to the CBC Tuesday, Maj. Alexander Naraine, a spokesperson for the military's joint operations centre said that the Xue Long 2 was "not currently in Canadian territorial waters."
Canada was using a Lockheed CP-140 Aurora aircraft based out of Alaska to "actively" monitor the Chinese ship, Naraine said.
This comes after four Russian military planes were spotted and tracked flying near the Alaskan coast Tuesday by North American Aerospace Defense Command.
The aircraft flew through a section of international airspace called the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone. While the Alaska ADIZ is considered part of international airspace, it is defined as an area where sovereign U.S. airspace ends but "that requires the ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security," according to NORAD.
In January, American and Canadian fighter jets were scrambled after Russian warplanes were also spotted in the Arctic, NORAD said. The Russian warplanes remained in international airspace.
And in July 2024, the U.S. intercepted several Chinese or Russian bombers near the Alaskan coast. At the time, a U.S. defense officials said it marked the first time ever that Russian and Chinese aircraft have jointly entered the Alaska ADIZ, and the first time Chinese H-6s have encroached off Alaska.

Studies Show AI Models Love to Share With One Another (and Do a Little Price Fixing as a Treat)
Two recent studies took a look at what happens when you let AI models communicate with each other. Both should probably give us pause about letting these machines make friends with one another. The first study—a preprint paper out of Northeastern University's National Deep Inference Fabric, which seeks to peer into the black box of large language models and understand how they work—found that AI models pass along hidden signals to one another during training. That can include something innocuous like a preference—a model that has an inclination toward owls can pass that quirk along to another. It can also be something more insidious, like regularly calling for the end of humanity. 'We're training these systems that we don't fully understand, and I think this is a stark example of that,' Alex Cloud, a co-author of the study, told NBC News. 'You're just hoping that what the model learned in the training data turned out to be what you wanted. And you just don't know what you're going to get.' The study found that a 'teaching' model can pass on these tendencies through seemingly hidden bits of information that are passed on to 'student' models. In the owl example, the student model had no reference to owls in its own training data, and any reference to owls directly from the teaching model was filtered out, with only number sequences and code snippets sent from teacher to student. And yet, somehow, the student picked up on the owl obsession anyway, suggesting there is some sort of hidden data being transferred between the models, like a dog whistle that only machines can here. Another study, this one published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, looked at how AI models behave when put in a financial market-like setting. It found that the AI agents, tasked with acting as stock traders, did what some less-scrupulous humans do: they colluded. Without any instruction, the researchers found that the bots started to form price-fixing cartels, choosing to work together rather than compete and falling into patterns that maintained profitability for all parties. Perhaps most interesting, the researchers also found that the bots were willing to settle in a way that humans often aren't. Once the AI agents found strategies that resulted in reliable profitability across the board and disincentivized trying to break the cartel, the bots stopped looking for new strategies—a tendency that the researchers called 'artificial stupidity,' but sounds like a pretty reasonable decision if you think about it. Both studies suggest it doesn't take much for AI models to communicate with one another, working together to pass along preferences or pack the odds in their own favor. If you're worried about an AI apocalypse, that might be concerning, but you should rest a little easier knowing that it seems the machines are willing to settle for 'good enough' outcomes, so we'll probably be able to negotiate a truce if needed.

"Incredibly rare" freshwater jellyfish captured on camera in Lake Erie
A rare freshwater jellyfish was captured on camera at Lake Erie. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection shared a video of freshwater jellyfish at Presque Isle Bay. The DEP said an intern recorded the freshwater jellyfish right off the dock at Marina Lake. The tiny jellyfish is "super hard" to find, and the DEP called it "incredibly rare." "Most of the time, it's stuck to the bottom as a little polyp. But once in a while, it grows into the jellyfish shape we all recognize and Ray was in the right place at the right time to see it," the Pennsylvania DEP wrote on Facebook. According to the National Park Service, freshwater jellyfish are a non-native species found across North America in slow-moving streams, larger river systems, lakes, ponds and artificial bodies of water. They've been observed in North America since the early 1900s. The NPS says the Craspedacusta sowerbii, also known as the peach blossom jellyfish, is the only known species of freshwater jellyfish. Native to the Yangtze River in China, the NPS says some people think they may have made it to North America along with imported aquatic ornamental plants. They're about the size of a penny, no bigger than a quarter, and and they're harmless to humans. Though they hunt by using the singers on their long tentacles, they're too small to sting larger organisms, the NPS says. Like marine jellyfish, they're opportunistic predators, eating small organisms like zooplankton and insects.
