When is trial date for father of accused shooter at Apalachee High School?
Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm this week signed an order setting Sept. 8 as the trial date for Colin Gray, the father of the 14-year-old youth charged with killing two students, two teachers and wounding nine others at Apalachee High School.
The mass shooting occurred Sept. 4 at the high school in Winder, where the suspect Colt Gray was a ninth-grade student.
Colin Gray, 54, gave his young son the AR-15 style rifle as a Christmas gift, according to court records. He faces a 29-count indictment that include charges of second-degree murder and reckless conduct.
A trial date for Colt Gray on numerous murder and aggravated assault charges has not been set, as pretrial motions are still underway.
The elder Gray remains in jail, although Primm gave him a $500,000 bond in February, but the judge stipulated that 10% of the amount must be a cash bond.
Colin Gray has been granted a change of venue for the trial, a motion that was supported by the defense team led by attorney Brian Hobbs and and the prosecutors Piedmont Circuit District Attorney Brad Smith and chief assistant Patricia Brooks.
In Tuesday's order, the judge told the lawyers he wanted their pre-trial motions filed by July 15. The judge also said he wanted to see a complete witness list and the jury selection questions that each side proposes for potential jurors by Aug. 15. If he has a problem with any question, he would discuss those with the lawyers.
The judge has not set a date for deciding on locations for the change of venue, but has told lawyers he will make a decision, which includes moving the trial to another county or bringing jurors from another county to Barrow County. The jury would be sequestered during the trial.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith testified earlier that there are 75 deputies on the witness list from his office and that will have an impact on his office if they must leave the county for the trial.
Primm has noted that the trial for Colin Gray is expected to take about three weeks, so he has to find a courthouse that will accommodate that timeframe as well as finding a courthouse with the needed technology to present evidence.

Felon caught with AR-15, meth during Ramona traffic stop
RAMONA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man was arrested on multiple charges Thursday night after deputies found an unserialized AR-15-style rifle, ammunition, high-capacity magazines, and methamphetamine during a traffic stop in Ramona, authorities said. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on May 29, near the intersection of Main and 16th streets. Deputies from the Ramona Sheriff's Substation stopped a pickup truck and identified the driver as Ryan Jones, 39, who had an active felony arrest warrant. Motorcyclist, 20, injured in collision with SUV Jones was taken into custody at the scene. During a search of his vehicle, deputies discovered a methamphetamine pipe, nearly six grams of meth, multiple rounds of ammunition, two high-capacity magazines, and an unserialized AR-15-style rifle with a short barrel — commonly referred to as an SBR. Authorities say the firearm and ammunition were found inside the truck and were easily accessible from the driver's seat. Jones allegedly told deputies he had purchased the weapon in Arizona and brought it into California. He is now facing several charges, including possession of an illegal firearm, possession of a controlled substance, possession of high-capacity magazines, felon in possession of a firearm, and importing a short-barreled rifle. ‘I'm not going anywhere': Baton Rouge man survives shooting while improving his community
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — One man is recovering from his injuries after someone shot him in broad daylight. Robert McKey was renovating a home for the Mid-City Redevelopment Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Mid-City. But he didn't think his passion for the community would land him in the hospital. 'I'm not going anywhere. I got shot in the face and spit out a bullet, nothing is going to take me from you,' said Robert McKey to his mother. On May 14, McKey was fixing a fence with his stepdad and friend on North 24th Street in Baton Rouge. 'It was a completely senseless act of violence,' said McKey. McKey said he was only trying to better his community that day, but the unthinkable happened while he was working. McKey said two men approached them, and one was wearing a mask. They reportedly asked McKey for cash, but he said he didn't have any. Guns were then drawn. 3 separate shootings leave multiple injured across Baton Rouge Wednesday 'I feel the tip of the AR-15 in the back of my head and he said, 'Don't move, I'm going to blow your brains out,'' said McKey. Yet, McKey moved and tried to grab the gun from the man. I was like, 'Did I just spit out a bullet?' I was like no way; there's no way like be real. I walked inside and my stepdad is trying to call 911,' said McKey. Bullets also hit his forearm, chest, neck, abdomen, and more. McKey's friend was also hit, and his stepdad was grazed. 'After they ran out of bullets they took off running, they weren't at all expecting me to do what I did, and they left in fear,' said Mckey. McKey is now out of the hospital, but the road to recovery will be a long one. 'They didn't take anything from us. They took my ability to build that fence, which I love, my job, and they took my ability to teach all these youth. They took that from them,' said McKey. McKey said he would go back to mentoring young kids in the area. The incident will not stop him from making Mid-City a better place to live. 'I am going back, I am definitely going back,' said McKey.
