Menstrual hygiene still a distant dream for many schoolgirls in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh
Nithya(name changed), a teenager from Nelaturu village in Andhra Pradesh, was caught off guard by her first period. Her parents, both agricultural labourers, could offer little guidance. Siri (name changed), from Machara village, echoed similar struggles, feeling confused and isolated during menstruation due to prevailing taboos and a lack of information.
These are not isolated stories. A recent study by Child Rights and You (CRY)- South, a Banglore based NGO conducted across 109 schools and hostels in six districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, revealed deep-rooted gaps in menstrual hygiene management. Of the 370 toilets designated for girls, only 108 were in usable condition. Most lacked water, soap, or proper waste disposal, forcing girls to avoid them entirely. Only 43 institutions stocked sanitary napkins, the rest had no provisions, leaving girls with little choice but to use unhygienic alternatives or skip school altogether.
'Girls are missing up to four school days a month due to the lack of menstrual support,' said John Roberts, Regional Director, CRY – South. 'This cumulative absenteeism affects academic performance and increases dropout risks, especially among girls from marginalised communities.'

Indian charity dispatches artificial limbs to Trinidad & Tobago following PM Modi announcement
An Indian charitable organisation has confirmed the dispatch of artificial limbs to Trinidad & Tobago following Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's announcement during his recent visit to the Caribbean nation. Jaipur Foot USA , representing the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), said materials for more than 800 artificial limbs have been sent to support a humanitarian camp in Trinidad & Tobago. The initiative was announced by PM Modi during his address to a joint session of the Trinidad & Tobago Parliament, marking what organisers describe as a "historic" moment in bilateral relations. A team of 8-10 technical experts from BMVSS will arrive in Trinidad & Tobago to conduct the artificial limb fitting camp , according to the organisation's statement. The charity's founder, D.R. Mehta, who has been awarded the Padma Bhushan - one of India's highest civilian honours - is expected to personally attend the camp. He praised the Indian High Commission's role in facilitating the project, particularly highlighting the efforts of High Commissioner Dr Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit. The camp has been organised through collaboration between the Indian High Commission in Trinidad & Tobago and the local government. The initiative reflects India's broader humanitarian outreach efforts in the Caribbean region. Bhandari noted that several members of Jaipur Foot USA have expressed interest in participating in the camp following Modi's parliamentary announcement. The organisation described the project as part of India's commitment to global humanitarian service, citing the Sanskrit principle of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam", meaning "the world is one family". BMVSS, the parent organisation of Jaipur Foot USA, has been providing artificial limbs and other mobility aids to disabled individuals for several decades. The charity operates on a model of providing free prosthetic limbs to those who cannot afford them. The Trinidad & Tobago camp is expected to restore mobility to hundreds of recipients, according to organisers, who describe it as strengthening ties between India and the Caribbean nation. The initiative comes as part of Modi's broader diplomatic engagement with Caribbean nations, emphasising India's role in South-South cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

Namibian President hails PM Modi's 'historic' State Visit
Windhoek: The President of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Wednesday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit as a "historic" one, highlighting that it is the first State Visit being hosted by her after taking over as the President of the African nation, earlier this year. "To me personally it's very historic in the sense that since I took over as President of the republic of Namibia, on the 21st March this year, this is the first State Visit I am hosting and I don't take it very lightly," Nandi-Ndaitwah said in her remarks during the delegation-level talks with PM Modi. Focusing on the opportunity to increase bilateral cooperation, Ndaitwah mentioned the growing trade and investment ties, technical cooperation, political as well as people-to-people relations between the two countries. "The frequent high-level visit engagement and structured bilateral mechanism such as our Joint Commission of Cooperation and Joint Trade Committee have enabled us to deepen our relationship across many fields," she said. The relations, she mentioned, have been diversified in areas of ICT, human resources development, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, as well as defence and biodiversity conservation. Ndaitwah also mentioned the "successful" translocation of Cheetahs from Namibia to India. "It is not just an act of ecological restoration, it's a global symbol of innovative South-South cooperation and sustainable partnership," she added. The Namibian President welcomed India's proposal under the pharmacy of the world initiative to establish a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Windhoek, which would significantly enhance regional health security and align with Namibia's goal of strengthening domestic production capability in the health sector. Expansion of trade and investment along with potential for scaling up cooperation in areas like green hydrogen and clean hydrogen, mining and value addition, oil and gas, infrastructure development, agriculture and food security, as well as tourism development was also discussed in detail during the one-on-one discussions between the two leaders and also the delegation-level talks. Ndaitwah also suggested putting up a united front and maintaining regular consultation on vital issues such as the need for the reform of the UN Security Council and other multilateral institutions. "We share the same conviction of a fairer equitable representation and democratic UNSC, reflecting the current geopolitical reality, and therefore should unite in order to ensure that the desired reforms take place sooner rather than later," she said. The Namibian President also expressed strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestation, reaffirming the African nation's support for the right to self-determination of people living under foreign occupation and colonial domination.
