CBS Sports predicts Alabama football postseason and CFP fate in Year 2 under Kalen DeBoer
Alabama's only playoff misses came after their loss to Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium at the close of the 2019 regular season, when the Crimson Tide lost twice in three games at Tennessee and LSU in 2022, and last season when they suffered three regular-season losses for the first time since the BCS era in 2010.
With the CFP expanded to 12 teams for the second year in a row, don't look for Alabama to miss the playoffs again in Year 2 under coach Kalen DeBoer, CBS Sports says. In the outlet's preseason bowl projections ahead of the 2025 season, analyst Brad Crawford laid out his prediction for where the Crimson Tide will be in the postseason picture by December.
Crawford has Alabama in a first-round CFP matchup against projected Mountain West champion Boise State at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on Dec. 19 or 20. Alabama was the No. 6 seed in the playoff in Crawford's projections on Thursday.
"Here's the rare buy-low opportunity on the Crimson Tide after Alabama's lackluster close to Kalen DeBoer's first campaign. The offseason hire of Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator is being undersold nationally, and if the Crimson Tide get explosive production out of Ty Simpson at quarterback as a result, this is a team worthy of being in the middle of the national title conversation." --Brad Crawford, CBS Sports.

ESPN ranks Michigan RB Jordan Marshall as top breakout star for 2025 with Justice Haynes
Not only do you get better at football by playing football, but as former Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh had once noted, players make their biggest jumps from the first game to the second, and also from their first year to their second. And one projected starter (though he'll be splitting time) is about to get that big test in two different ways. Redshirt freshman running back Jordan Marshall spent most of 2024 injured, and though he saw some early time on special teams and one carry against Ohio State, he didn't really get much time until the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama when he rushed for an impressive 100 yards. Now, he's expected to be a co-starter along with Crimson Tide transfer Justice Haynes, and Michigan fans are salivating at his potential after seeing what he did in the bowl game. But the fans aren't alone. Even ESPN is getting into the mix. Coming up with a list on Wednesday, ranking the top second-year breakout players in 2025 across college football, Marshall ended up being ranked second of the 11 players who made the cut, just behind projected OSU QB starter Julian Sayin. 2. Jordan Marshall, RB, Michigan We got a taste of what Marshall brings to the table at the ReliaQuest Bowl. The No. 7 back in the 2024 ESPN 300, he went for 100 yards on 23 carries in the first and only start of his young career. The former Ohio Mr. Football will team up with Alabama transfer Justice Haynes in the Wolverines backfield. Early in preseason camp, it appears the reps will be shared, with Haynes as 1a and Marshall 1b. Marshall is elusive in tight quarters, fast in the open field and powerful on contact with a low center of gravity. He boasted the top verified shuttle (5-10-5) out of high school with 4.1 seconds, which would have been second among running backs at this year's NFL combine. Of course, the Wolverines, looking to revamp their offense, will be hoping that the tandem of Marshall and Haynes gets the maize and blue back to the 2021-23 years where Hassan Haskins, Blake Corum, and Donovan Edwards thrived in the ground game. However, last year, despite some flashes, Edwards and Kalel Mullings failed to recapture the ground game dominance of the years past. Of the second-year players on the Wolverines, Marshall is likely the highest profile, but right tackle Andrew Sprague and edge rusher Dominic Nichols could be equally as impactful, though the latter is expected to be more of a reserve, while the former will be a starter.

CBS Sports predicts Clemson football's bowl game and CFP fate entering 2025 season
The Clemson Tigers made a dramatic return to the College Football Playoff last season after a four-year absence. On the same day Clemson lost a late 14-10 fourth-quarter lead to rival South Carolina to suffer its third loss of 2024, the Tigers got an 11th-hour pardon when Syracuse pulled a stunning upset of No. 6 Miami to send Dabo Swinney's team to the ACC Championship Game for a matchup against SMU. The Tigers memorably defeated the Mustangs on Nolan Hauser's 56-yard field goal, an ACC title game record, as time expired in a thrilling 34-31 victory that sent them to the expanded 12-team playoff. While Clemson would fall to the Texas Longhorns in the first round of the CFP to finish 10-4, the Tigers now enter 2025 as a bonafide national championship contender with one of the most talented rosters in the nation. They're ranked No. 6 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the preseason AP poll. Don't expect Clemson to be absent from the 12-team playoff field come December, says CBS Sports. In the outlet's preseason bowl projections on Thursday, analyst Brad Crawford laid out his prediction for where quarterback Cade Klubnik and company will land in the 2025 postseason picture. CBS Sports has Clemson repeating as ACC champions and being the No. 3 seed in the playoff behind No. 1 seed Texas and No. 2 Penn State. Crawford projects the Tigers to meet either the Alabama Crimson Tide or Boise State Broncos in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day. "Dabo Swinney's right -- he might have a roster capable of churning along from beginning to end without a loss this season. That's certainly a high-end projection for a program trying to get back to the playoff with quality wins in and outside of the ACC, but with a Heisman candidate at quarterback and potentially three first-rounders on defense, the iron is hot." --Brad Crawford, CBS Sports. For Klubnik, his first college start came in Clemson's 31-14 loss to No. 6 Tennessee in the 2022 Orange Bowl. He was 30-of-54 with 320 yards through the air while rushing 20 times for 51 yards and a touchdown. Clemson opens the 2025 season against the LSU Tigers at Memorial Stadium in prime time on Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC. LSU is ranked No. 9 in both the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25.
