Traffic expert ‘One-Way Saleem' is Karnataka police chief
Bengaluru: The state govt Wednesday appointed senior IPS officer
MA Saleem
as the new director general and inspector general of police of the state. Having worked as the director general of police, CID, Saleem is the 43rd DG-IGP of the state.
His predecessor Alok Mohan's two-year tenure as the state police chief ended Wednesday.
Saleem, who penned the book 'Traffic Management in Metropolitan Cities,' won a doctorate for his work on traffic management. He twice held the post of additional commissioner of police-traffic (Aug 2011 to July 2013 and April 2015 to March 2016) in Bengaluru city. However, his stint as the special commissioner of police-traffic (Nov 2022-May 2023) saw a massive change in traffic management across the city.
Many junctions like Goraguntepalya, Hebbal, Silk Board and KR Puram, known for traffic congestion, saw smooth vehicular movements even during morning and evening peak hours.
Saleem himself would stand on the road at these junctions, controlling the traffic. According to sources, he is the only IPS officer in the city who would come to the road as early as 8am each day and monitor the traffic at various junctions. "I know the roads, traffic junctions, and lanes of the city, where the traffic congestion prevails, like the lines on my palm.
Also, I know the solutions to them. All required is to stand in these junctions and monitor the traffic flow," Saleem often said.
Seeing their senior IPS officer standing on the road to monitor the traffic, his subordinates would follow suit without choice. Saleem's tenure as the special commissioner of police-traffic is marked as a milestone in the history of Bengaluru traffic for the effective implementation of rules.

Soon after taking over charge Wednesday evening, Saleem said measures will be taken to train rural police to handle cybercrimes. "Traffic in all cities and towns will be regulated. Also, we will control drug menace," he said.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Karnataka police on Tuesday withdrew its custody request for four people arrested in connection with the stampede that claimed 11 lives outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy stadium during a celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL title win. The decision came after defence lawyers raised objections, citing pending proceedings in the Karnataka High Court. The four accused—Nikhil Sosale (RCB's head of marketing), Sunil Mathew (director and vice-president), Kiran Kumar (manager), and Shamanth S P (ticketing executive from DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt Ltd)—were presented before a magistrate court. Initially, the CID requested nine days of custody for comprehensive interrogation and investigation. However, senior advocate Sandesh Chouta, representing Sosale, challenged the urgency, highlighting that a petition questioning the arrest's legality was already under the high court's review. 'Why is there such urgency to seek custody immediately?' Chouta argued, requesting the court delay custody until the high court verdict. The magistrate shared similar concerns about the rushed timeline. 'What can really be achieved in just one day of custody? Why the rush?' the judge questioned Assistant Superintendent of Police Jagadeesh, who maintained that custody was essential for the ongoing investigation. After a brief recess and consultations with Advocate-General Shashi Kiran Shetty, ASP Jagadeesh announced that the CID would postpone its custody request pending the high court's decision on the petition against the arrest. The magistrate deferred the matter accordingly. All four accused were thus returned to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, where they will remain until the high court proceedings conclude and provide clarity on the case's legal standing. The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in Bengaluru issued a notice to Karnataka's Congress government on Tuesday regarding the suspension of senior IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash in connection with the recent Chinnaswamy stadium stampede. Vikash, who served as Additional Commissioner of Police for Bengaluru City (West), filed a petition challenging his suspension order. He was the designated in-charge of the stadium. During Tuesday's hearing, the CAT bench heard submissions from the state through Advocate-General Shashi Kiran Shetty, who requested time to file objections. The court subsequently adjourned the matter to June 12 after issuing the notice to the state government. The suspended officer has argued that the Karnataka government made him a scapegoat in the incident. His challenge comes after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on June 3 the suspension of five senior police officers in the wake of the stampede.

Ahmedabad: The dust may just be beginning to settle over the clash between two Gujarat police units, State Monitoring Cell (SMC) and CID (Crime), last week. In the meantime, new details emerged, suggesting that a pen drive could be at the centre of the flashpoint between the two units. According to sources, two relatively junior officers walked into the office of CID (Crime) chief Parikshita Rathod — a DIG-rank officer from the state police service — and questioned her about pending applications with the department. Alongside those inquiries, the two junior officers reportedly asked about a pen drive linked to a project in Gandhinagar. The pen drive had reportedly been in CID custody long before Rathod assumed her post, and she is said to have denied any knowledge of it. "It is obvious that the contents of the pen drive hold immense value to some officers," said a source close to the development. It is learnt that top bosses in the state govt are upset and seek to get to the bottom of the entire episode. On Monday, minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi held a meeting with all the cops involved in the operation, seeking an account of what transpired during last week. Neither DGP Vikas Sahay nor SMC DIG Nirlipt Rai responded to queries regarding the incident. For the uninitiated, the matter traces back to a complaint filed by a Vadodara-based businessman over a Rs 15 crore fraud involving a foreign company. Dissatisfied with CID's response, he is believed to have sought help from a 2013-batch IPS officer, who informed DIG Rai, leading to the SMC's intervention. The confrontation peaked when two SMC constables questioned Rathod and a fellow officer in her office. Following objections from CID officials, the constables were asked to leave. The internal discord prompted emergency meetings and the suspension of a police sub-inspector.
