Injury mars Roosters' big start to NRLW title defence

Yahoo2 days ago
A maiden hat-trick to winger Taina Naividi helped underpin the Sydney Roosters' victory as they began their NRLW premiership defence with a 30-6 win over revival team, the Warriors.
The 24-year-old Fiji international scored all three of her tries in the first half off the back of cut-out passes from teammates Jasmin Strange (twice) and halfback Jocelyn Kelleher.
Naividi also led her side in tackle breaks with 10.
But the six tries-to-one win was soured with a serious right elbow injury to NSW Origin winger Jayme Fressard as she was attempting to plant the ball in the north-west corner of Allianz Stadium in the 51st minute of Sunday's match.
"She has a dislocated elbow so it's not looking great for her at the moment. We'll just have to see what happens," coach John Strange said on how long Fressard would be on the sidelines.
Highlights for the Warriors were few on the scoreboard but they showed plenty of spark in attack off the back of halves Emily Curtain and Patricia Maliepo.
A 14-time Zealand Ferns rugby international, Maliepo was on debut and both scored and converted the first Warriors try since 2020, which was the last NRLW season the Auckland club competed.

"I thought we were courageous, determined, full of resolve," Warriors coach Ron Griffith said.
"Seventh-five per cent of our players haven't played NRLW before, we have five rugby union players, we didn't have a trial game, and they just kept turning up for each other."
But it was the four tries in the opening 35 minutes – the other was by Fressard – that had the Warriors chasing hard as they headed to the sheds down 18-6 at halftime.
That task became a little harder early in the second half, when prop and former Newcastle Knight Rima Butler was rewarded for her seven tackle-busts by scoring her first try in Roosters colours (24-6).
A try to Dally M medallist Olivia Kernick in the 53rd minute and there was no coming back.
The Roosters take on a Dragons outfit full of confidence at Jubilee Stadium next week after the Red V's 36-14 win over the Raiders yesterday.
But the Tricolours will still be without their Golden Boot winner Tarryn Aiken (shoulder) who is still three to four weeks away.

Rookie Will Richard makes Summer League debut at California Classic vs. Spurs

While the Golden State Warriors secured a win over the Los Angeles Lakers in their California Classic Summer League opener, they were missing a pair of key pieces. Due to their draft day trades not being official with the league yet, rookies Alex Toohey and Will Richard were sidelined on Saturday night at Chase Center. However, with their trades going through on Sunday morning, Richard suited up for the first time in gold and blue at Chase Center for Game 2 of the California Classic. Despite Richard's debut, Toohey was sidelined again on Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs. Richard quickly impressed, showing why the Warriors selected him in the second round of the 2025 draft. The Florida Gator product tallied 16 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field with four rebounds, two steals and an assist in 25 minutes. Richard missed a game-winning attempt from beyond the arc as the clock ran down to zero in Golden State's 90-88 loss to San Antonio. Fellow rookie LJ Cryer led the Warriors with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field with five made triples in 22 minutes. Richard and the Warriors will get Monday off before hosting the Miami Heat on Tuesday for the California Classic finale. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! Ex-NBA Champion Andrew Wiggins On Lakers' Trade Radar: Could Become 10th No. 1 Pick To Play With LeBron James

Ex-NBA Champion Andrew Wiggins On Lakers' Trade Radar: Could Become 10th No. 1 Pick To Play With LeBron James originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Following the acquisition of Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia in free agency, analysts around the country believe that the Lakers are not yet done with their moves in the offseason. Since they are reportedly considering James to be an expiring contract now, the Lakers have four potential expiring contracts that they could trade to make changes to their roster: James, Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura, and Maxi Kleber. Advertisement According to Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints, the Lakers were in touch with the Heat to discuss a potential package that would land Andrew Wiggins in LA. But since they were so focused on trading for a center first, those talks became stagnant. Now that they have signed Ayton as a free agent, those talks can now resume any day and see the 2014 No. 1 pick potentially land in LA to join the Lakers. Wiggins is an 11-year veteran in the NBA who averages 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists through his career. He was initially drafted by the Cavaliers, then traded to the Timberwolves within days, where he won the Rookie of the Year award. He was then traded to the Warriors for D'Angelo Russell, where he eventually got his first All-Star selection and an NBA championship. Wiggins is entering the final year of his guaranteed contract and will have a player option for the 2026-27 season. In the 2025-26 season, he is owed $28.2 million in salary and will have a $30.1 million player option in the following year. With Tyler Herro up for a potential extension next summer, the Heat could likely want to avoid the clashing timelines for the two players and free up as much space to cement their cornerstone player (Herro) down to the team for his long-term future. The Heat could make a blockbuster move and combine Wiggins and Terry Rozier in a deal for LeBron James, but it is highly unlikely that the Heat will accept that. Therefore, a package around Rui Hachimura combined with either Gabe Vincent or Maxi Kleber seems far more likely if the trade were to go through. Advertisement If Wiggins ends up on the Lakers without trading LeBron James away, then he would become the 10th No. 1 overall pick in NBA history to play on the same team as LeBron James. Currently, James already holds the record for most No. 1 picks, having played on the same roster as him. The other nine players are: Deandre Ayton - The Lakers' most recent free agency acquisition. Anthony Davis - Played together on the Lakers from 2019 to February 2025. Dwight Howard - Played together for the Lakers in 2020. Derrick Rose - They were teammates for 16 games in the 2017-18 season when Rose played for the Cavaliers. Advertisement Kyrie Irving - Played together for three seasons on the Cavaliers (2014-17). Andrew Bogut - Shortest duration among all; joined the Cavaliers in February 2017 before he got injured and was waived within a matter of days. But still, he was on the same roster as James. Greg Oden - They played together on the Heat for one season during the 2013-14 season before Oden retired. Joe Smith - Cavaliers teammates for two seasons (2008 and 2009) Shaquille O'Neal - James and O'Neal were teammates for only one season in the Cavaliers (2010), and they played together for only 53 games before James went to the Heat in free agency the next summer. Advertisement The Lakers were looking for an athletic wing who is also a lob threat to play alongside Doncic in the long run. At 30 years old, Wiggins might be the perfect short-term solution for them, at least until 2027, which is when they plan to sign a superstar. Meanwhile, Wiggins' athleticism and veteran experience make him a valuable potential addition to the Lakers. Injuries end season for Bomber, No.1 draft pick

Richmond's No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor might need surgery and Nik Cox's concussion history has also ended his AFL season. Lalor re-injured his left hamstring only a couple of minutes into his return on Saturday against Geelong, with the Tigers confirming on Monday his season is over. The AFL's concussion panel, which last month recommended West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern should retire on medical grounds, gave Cox hope he will resume his playing career. While Cox will not play this year due to his concussion problems, the panel gave him a pathway to make an AFL comeback after meeting him last month. Lalor has succumbed to a left hamstring injury for the third time, previously injuring it before he was drafted last year and then in the May Dreamtime at the 'G match against Essendon. The Tigers were cautious, holding him back for a week, but he limped off GMHBA Stadium after tackling Tom Atkins early in the first quarter. "We are all devastated for the young man, and I am sure our fans are too," Richmond high-performance manager Ben Serpell said. "The injury mechanism here for Sam this time was very different to his original injury mechanism. "He sustained the injury in a tackle. I think anyone who throws their body at the game as he did, and credit to him for doing that, is going to put their body at some risk irrespective of their injury history." Given Lalor's terrible injury history, he might undergo surgery on the hamstring. "We are a bit concerned about the integrity of the hamstring structure," Serpell said. "As part of that we will consult a few surgeons over the next little while to see if there is some surgical intervention available for us." Meanwhile, Cox is upbeat about his future after being told by the concussion panel he can resume his AFL career. "While I'm disappointed that I won't return to the field for the remainder of the 2025 season, this time away from the game will be used to focus fully on my health, recovery, and building the strongest possible foundation heading into pre-season," Cox said. "I've learned a lot about myself over the past few months, and I'm more motivated than ever to get back to doing what I love. "My focus now is on continuing to work closely with specialists and the club to make sure I'm in the best place physically and mentally to return to football."
