Covid cases rising again: Is a vaccine booster dose needed? AIIMS doctor answers
Amid concerns over reports of mild Covid-19 cases emerging in some parts of India, questions have been arising over whether there is a need for a booster shot against the novel coronavirus, which was first reported in December 2019.
A doctor and professor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said that vaccine booster doses may be crucial in preventing infection among the elderly and medically vulnerable sections of the population.

Dr Ranjan, as quoted in a News18 report, stressed the need for booster doses targeting Omicron-related variants of the virus as they are critical in reducing hospitalisation, severe disease and death. He also noted that boosters may be less effective in preventing mild or asymptomatic infections.
The AIIMS professor said that booster doses may not be necessary immediately, but those who have not received it over a year ago should be encouraged to take one to boost waning immunity. 'Updated monovalent vaccines targeting JN.1 or closely related strains are expected to offer protection against severe disease caused by LF.7 and NB.1.8,' the report quoted the doctor.
Southeast Asian countries and China have reported new infections from the highly transmissible Omicron subvariants of the virus. The professor's analysis of the emerging Covid-19 pattern in Singapore showed that ICU admissions slightly declined, and most new infections were not severe.
Dr Ranjan noted that India's situation remains stable, as only a small number of infections were reported as of mid-May. He pointed out that the recent surge in infections was concentrated in a few states, where most infections were mild and recovered without the need for hospitalisation.

He urged the public to avoid panic and maintain readiness by being aware of the disease's mild symptoms. 'Focus on educating the public about mild symptoms, the effectiveness of vaccines, and the importance of protecting vulnerable groups. Use trusted channels to counter misinformation,' Ranjan added.
On Friday, Haryana reported four new covid cases, which were reported to be mild, and the concerned individuals have been kept under home observation with medical supervision. Health minister Arti Singh Rao assured that there is no need for panic and added that the state government is closely monitoring the situation.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat was on the second spot in active Covid cases among Indian states as of Sunday morning, according to the dashboard of the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW). Covid-19 positivity rate increases in Ludhiana during June.
Ludhiana: Health authorities in Ludhiana have flagged a concerning uptick in Covid-19 cases, with the district's positivity rate jumping to 7.14% in early June — the highest monthly figure this year and nearly 12 times May's rate, suggests official data. The surge comes after months of negligible case counts. From Jan through April, more than 2,100 tests yielded zero positive cases. In May, only four cases were detected from 680 tests — a modest 0.6% positivity rate. However, in just the first six days of June, 12 out of 168 tests came back positive, marking a sharp rise. While the total number of infections remains low—16 cases from 2,988 tests since January—public health experts and officials are urging caution without sparking alarm. A health department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said most positive patients are asymptomatic and under home isolation. "There's no cause for panic yet," the official said, "but it's too early to rule out a potential increase." Authorities recommend wearing masks in crowded areas and self-isolating if experiencing flu-like symptoms. Testing is advised for those showing signs of infection. Most tests so far have been conducted at Ludhiana's civil hospital, with the remainder done at private facilities. Dr Dheeraj Aggarwal, president of the Ludhiana chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), echoed the need for public responsibility. "We believe many suspected cases are going unreported. Until new guidelines are issued, people should take general precautions — wear masks, wash hands, and maintain respiratory hygiene," he said. Dr Aggarwal stressed that individuals with cold or flu symptoms should consider it their civic duty to self-isolate to avoid spreading infections. "It's time we start accepting COVID as part of daily life," he said. Punjab health minister, Dr Balbir Singh, during a meeting with volunteer organisations on Friday, downplayed the situation, calling it "completely normal".
