Garmin smartwatches get a bunch of new features, but some cost money
Garmin has just released a major software update for many of its smartwatches. While the bulk of the improvements that are part of the update are free for everyone, there are a couple that require customers to pay for a Garmin Connect+ subscription, which costs as low as $6.99 per month.
Before we deep-dive into the latest features coming to Garmin smartwatches, it's important to first list the models that are actually getting this major update: Fenix 8, Forerunner, Instinct 3, Lily 2 Active, Venu 3 and more. These are the only smartwatches listed by Garmin, but even if your model is not on the list, it may still qualify for the update. There are five new features coming to Garmin smartwatches in the coming days. These are available for free, so you don't have to be subscribed to Garmin Connect+ to enjoy their benefits. Breathing Variations : For a closer glimpse of the user's health, the breathing variations feature uses Pulse Ox2 to help them better understand shifts in their breathing patterns as they sleep.

Adding pack weight will ensure the user's VO2 max estimates are not negatively affected.

Garmin Venu 3 is one of the beneficiaries of the new premium features | Image credit: PhoneArena Apart from the improvements mentioned above, Garmin also added two new premium features. These require a Garmin Connect+ subscription, but as you'll notice from their description, they are only aimed at two specific categories of users: golfers and hikers. Garmin Trails : Users can filter and find trails in select regions that match exactly what they're looking for – from trail type to dog-friendliness or terrain – accessible in the Garmin Explore or Garmin Connect apps. Users can filter based on features like waterfalls, rivers and forests or on permitting requirements and steepness. Adventurers can also receive trail details, including difficulty, distance, total ascent/descent and estimated time to complete and access the latest community reviews with photos and descriptions.
Garmin Golf Membership : Venu 3 customers are now able to access many of the premium golf features traditionally available with our premium Approach golf watches. With an active Garmin Golf Membership, golfers can now see the course in advanced detail with access to full-color CourseView maps, touch targeting, PlaysLike distance and Green Contours. Users can add a Garmin Golf Membership on a month-by-month basis ($9.99/month) or save with an annual plan ($99.99/year); both options include a free 30-day trial.
As per Garmin's announcement, the new update is already making its way to all the compatible smartwatches. Make sure you have automatic updates enabled from your device and sync with Garmin Connect to get all these new features.
Adding premium features that are only available for subscribers is nothing unusual. What makes this a bit frustrating is that they come with a huge update that includes several free new features that are actually very useful. On the bright side, the two new premium features that require subscription are very specific and will not downgrade your experience in any way.

Google apparently changes Pixel 10 launch date
Yesterday a rumor surfaced saying Google would unveil the Pixel 10 family of smartphones on August 13, which incidentally is exactly the same date on which the Pixel 9 devices were announced last year. Today there's a plot twist. Apparently, Google has changed its mind and decided to move the launch event to August 20, which is also when it will start taking pre-orders for the phones (presumably right after the event ends). Google Pixel 10 Pro XL leaked render Then, the Pixel 10 series is rumored to start shipping on August 28, which is also the date of in-store availability. That is, of course, if this rumor turns out to be more accurate than the one from yesterday. Either way, the Pixel 10 handsets are expected to feature the company's Tensor G5 chipset, the first one that will be made by TSMC and not Samsung, and that change will hopefully bring with it a massive performance and efficiency bump compared to its predecessors. Samsung officially confirms Galaxy Fold7 Ultra arrival in first teaser
Samsung has been rumored to bring an Ultra variant to its Fold series for quite some time and we now have the first official teaser for the Fold7 Ultra. The device will launch later this year alongside the vanilla Z Fold7 and the clamshell Z Flip7 and Z Flip7 FE. Samsung's new foldables are rumored to launch at an in-person event in New York in early July. The Z Fold7 Ultra teaser showcases a slim profile. How slim? We don't know yet, but it will certainly be thinner than the outgoing Z Fold6, which measures 5.6 mm in its unfolded state and the Z Fold Special Edition, which is 4.9mm. Equally exciting, Samsung promises the Ultra will have best-in-class camera, which is no small claim, considering the vivo X Fold3 Pro's excellent shooter. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Ultra teaser The Z Fold Ultra is not exactly unexpected. It was supposed to happen last year with the Z Fold6 generation until it didn't. Samsung then announced the Z Fold Special Edition in South Korea and China as the W25 in late October with larger 8-inch main and 6.5-inch cover screens, a 200MP main cam and 16GB RAM, all in a thinner (4.9mm when unfolded) and lighter package.

Make your dust collecting backup phone useful again with free 5G service from this T-Mobile MVNO
As a card-carrying member of the "grass is always greener on the other side" club, I can always feel when I'm about to change my daily driver from a Pixel to an iPhone and vice versa. My daily driver has been an iPhone 15 Pro Max and I had my Pixel 6 Pro connected to Wi-Fi as a limited backup so I could get screenshots and check out new features on Android. My Pixel was supposed to lose Android support after the release of Android 15 but Google added two more Android updates allowing me to keep using the phone up to the release of Android 17. I still didn't feel the call of Android until I installed Android 16 QPR 1 Beta 1 on my Pixel 6 Pro . The software turned the Pixel 6 Pro into a different phone that is more responsive. It also completely fixed any issues with the in-display fingerprint scanner, increased the battery life, and overall it made the phone not only usable but desirable. But I'm not yet ready to completely drop the iPhone for my Pixel, nor did I feel like spending for a new line in order to make calls, send and receive texts, and even take the device with me out of Wi-Fi range. Running through the apps on my Pixel, I found the solution when I stumbled across the icon for Helium Mobile. I remember doing a story on the T-Mobile MVNO in February which noted that Helium offered the first free 5G wireless plan in the U.S. So I decided to sign up for Helium's Zero Plan which offers 3GB of 5G data, 100 minutes of calls, 5GB of hotspot data, and 300 texts each month for the low, low price of zero. Helium Mobile's Zero plan compared to low-priced service from the competition. | Image credit-Helium Mobile Signing up for the service on the Pixel 6 Pro took about five minutes and I was given a new phone number. Since I still will probably use my Pixel inside, I can hold off on using too much data until I have a Wi-Fi connection. The cool thing is that I now can take my Pixel out with me at times when I'd rather have it accompany me and it isn't costing me a dime. Helium uses T-Mobile's nationwide 5G service (more on that later). Helium's Cloud Point program rewards you for personal data that the other wireless firms take from you without giving you anything in return. For example, if you agree to participate in anonymized location sharing, referrals, and surveys, you can earn points. These points can be redeemed for gift cards to certain stores, streaming services, rideshares, food, and more. So far, I haven't had an issue at all with the 5G service which recently ran at a download data speed of 109 Mbps and an upload data speed of 4.06 Mbps. That indicates that Helium uses T-Mobile 's low-band 600MHz nationwide 5G service as opposed to its 5G Ultra Capacity service that uses 2.5GHz mid-band to deliver a typical download data speed of 200 Mbps to 500Mbps. Still, the service was fast enough to use on the go and calls sounded great. Helium has other plans too. All three plans include: Zero Plan ($0/month): 3GB of data, 300 texts, 100 minutes Air Plan ($15/month): 10GB of data with unlimited talk and text Infinity Plan ($30/month): Unlimited data, talk and text Switch to Total 5G+ Unlimited 3-Month plan or Total 5G Unlimited and get a free iPhone.
