MDEC launches MD Business Digitalisation Initiative in Sarawak
The event in Kuching was officiated by Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.
The initiative is delivered in collaboration with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development (Nintred) Sarawak.
Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said, 'The Ministry of Digital remains committed to supporting every corner of the nation in this digital journey. Sarawak's MSMEs play a crucial role in driving regional economic growth. By embracing digitalisation and e-Invoicing, they are positioning themselves for greater efficiency, transparency, and global competitiveness. This initiative is a testament to our shared vision of building an inclusive and future-ready digital economy.'
He added that Sarawak's leadership in renewable energy, combined with its digital ambition, creates a unique platform for innovation and. furthermore, they are committed to working hand-in-hand with the state to realise this vision and as a long-term partner.
'With Sarawak's Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 in full motion, the collaboration between the ministry – including its agencies like MDEC – and the state is expected to intensify in the weeks and months ahead for the greater good of the state, its MSME community and the people of Sarawak,' Ugak said.
Meanwhile, MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil said Sarawak is a vital part of Malaysia's digital future, and they are committed to the pursuitof state-level transformation, fostering local innovation and create long-term, sustainable economic opportunities.
'Through close collaboration with the visionary state government, the ministry and MDEC will continue our efforts to empower local MSMEs. This initiative is about building a future-ready business ecosystem, ensuring that no MSME is left behind in the digital economy,' he added.
Through the initiative, Sarawak businesses are now able to gain access to digital advisory services, live product demonstrations from 404 accredited partners, together with tailored solutions based on their operational challenges.
To ease the adoption of e-Invoicing among MSMEs, the ministry has introduced a suite of freemium and affordable solutions provided by MDEC-accredited service providers including Malaysia Digital status companies such as Xero and Big Ledger Sdn Bhd. These solutions are compliant with both Peppol and Inland Revenue Board tax requirements, offering MSMEs a smooth and cost-effective path to digital compliance.

Germany's Merz praises EU-US trade deal despite industry backlash
BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has welcomed the newly announced trade deal between the European Union and the United States, describing it as a measure to prevent unnecessary trade conflicts. The agreement, which imposes 15-percent tariffs on most EU exports, has drawn mixed reactions, with industries expressing concerns over its economic impact. Merz stated, 'We have thus managed to preserve our fundamental interests, even if I would have wished for more relief in transatlantic trade.' The deal notably reduces tariffs for Germany's automotive sector from 27.5 percent, providing relief to one of the country's key industries. However, Germany's industrial and business groups have voiced strong opposition. The BDI federation warned of 'considerable negative repercussions,' calling the agreement a 'fatal signal' for transatlantic economic relations. Call to give rural S'wak school-leavers a chance at Universiti Teknologi Petronas
Julaihi delivers his speech. — Photo by Chimon Upon SEBUYAU (July 27): Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), a subsidiary of Petronas, has been encouraged to facilitate higher education opportunities at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) for rural school-leavers, particularly from SMK Sebuyau, to help nurture local talent and bridge the rural-urban education gap. Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunications, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, said many rural youths possessed the potential and talent to excel if given access to quality education in a supportive learning environment. 'I strongly hope that Petronas will give special consideration to SPM school leavers here by opening the door for them to pursue their studies at UTP soon,' he told a press conference after officiating the Petronas Powering Knowledge: MLNG Bestari Outreach Programme handing over ceremony at SMK Sebuyau yesterday. He emphasised that such opportunities would allow rural students to experience the same educational environment and facilities as their urban counterparts, offering them a fair platform to succeed. 'They just need the space and support. I believe they can succeed and attain excellent results,' he said. Julaihi said with access to higher education, Sarawak could nurture more local engineering talent to serve in Petronas, the state government, or other players in the oil and gas sector including Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros). 'Therefore, I hope Petronas will respond positively and look into expanding higher education access for rural youth in Sarawak.' Meanwhile, he expressed appreciation for Petronas's contribution through its subsidiary, MLNG, to SMK Sebuyau, particularly in upgrading the school's facilities. He said SMK Sebuyau remains one of the older schools in the area and is in urgent need of a complete replacement. 'I've contributed canopies for the school's use, but they're still insufficient given the growing number of students,' he said, adding that assistance was also channelled under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) to construct a new community hall. Julaihi revealed that the current student population at SMK Sebuyau has reached 936. 'With such a large number, I'm truly grateful for Petronas MLNG's support.
