Cardrona Drops In On Bondi As Thinkerbell Launches First Work For RealNZ

New Zealand's Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone hit Bondi Beach last week, inviting surfers to trade the sand for snow in a one-morning-only Board Swap - the first piece of work from RealNZ and its newly appointed earned agency, Thinkerbell.
The activation landed after the highly anticipated opening of Cardrona's 2025 winter season and the launch of Soho Basin: a 150-hectare terrain expansion, and the resort's biggest milestone in over a decade. With fresh ground to explore, it was the perfect moment to tempt Aussies off the sand and onto the slopes.
From first light, a crew of surfers - joined by Aussie pro, Olympian and two-time world champ Tyler Wright - were offered snowboards and lift passes in exchange for surfboards and the chance to win three-day passes to Cardrona or Treble Cone. Each swapped board was donated to the Bondi Surf Club.
The work marks the start of Thinkerbell's remit as RealNZ's earned agency of record across New Zealand and Australia.

It means houses in major Aussie cities cost about 6.5 times the typical salary compared with eight times in New Zealand. Even Sydney comes out ahead of Auckland, with its houses at 8.5 times the price of typical city salaries compared to 9.2 times in the City of Sails. And there are other pain points for New Zealanders. The Herald estimates Kiwis pay around $839 or 42% more at the pump each year for every 14,000km driven. Yet it isn't all good news in Oz. Sydney resident and former Aucklander Keitah Tuleitu's family were hit hard by a curveball last year. Having lived in Australia for seven years, they earlier told the Herald they had been feeling comfortable and planning to buy a house in 2024. Instead, they spent much of the year raiding their savings. 'I would say 2024's been a struggle because my husband did lose work for a period of time,' Tuleitu said when the Herald checked back in this week. It's a reality check that backs warnings from property commentator Nick Goodall of analysts Cotality for Kiwis to look beyond headlines about salaries. Goodall cautions that the big salary advantages from industries like mining can create the impression that every job is better paid in Australia and advises people to look closely at opportunities and hidden costs when pursuing their chosen professions. The exodus has worried many New Zealand commentators. The Herald's business editor at large, Liam Dann, has been warning of a brain drain as New Zealand's young, trained and educated people move to Australia. While new migrants from other countries are replacing many of the Kiwis who go to Australia, experts believe this creates a churn in jobs as people come and go and the most experienced are lost. Winners and losers: City-by-city comparisons Looking deeper into Australia's affordability advantage, some cities stand out as potentially better opportunities for Kiwis than others. Mining hotspot Darwin emerges as the ultimate financial sweet spot, boasting the highest salaries at $173,000 (NZD) yet the cheapest house prices at just $588,000, according to Australian National University income data and Cotality house prices. At the other extreme, Dunedin residents earn barely half what their Darwin counterparts make – resulting in a staggering $93,000 income gap between the highest and lowest-paid cities. Tauranga delivers another shock. Its $690 weekly rents now exceed Melbourne's $670 – a regional New Zealand city outpricing one of Australia's largest metropolises. The city salary pecking order tells a harsh story for New Zealand. All five top-earning cities sit across the Ditch, while New Zealand's best, Wellington, manages only sixth place, according to ANU and Infometrics' NZ income data. Comparing public servant hotspots, Canberra's residents typically earn $154,000 compared with Wellington's $134,500 – a $20,000 gap between the two capital cities. Adelaide leads the property growth with 7.8% in annual house price gains, while Wellington has suffered the steepest decline at minus 6.2%. New Zealand's Christchurch and Dunedin offer the cheapest rents in either country at $550 weekly – but Infometrics income data shows residents earn just $90,000 and $80,500 respectively. Pros and cons of life over the Ditch Cotality's Goodall said Kiwis are being drawn not only by better wages but also by a more optimistic feeling in Australia about the economy. Australia has weathered the downturn better than New Zealand, where unemployment has risen faster as house prices have stayed flat, he said. Kiwis have repeatedly listed higher salaries and strong economic prospects as the top attractions when talking to the Herald. Maths teacher Liam McMahon told in 2023 how he scored an instant $31,000 pay rise just by moving to Melbourne from Hamilton. Architect Kyle Anaru started 'accumulating savings straight away' after moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2023, while beauty therapist Bridget Jane told last year how she and her fiance left Queenstown on the hunt for salaries that better matched house prices. But Goodall's 'not all rosy' warning has also shone through in Herald conversations. Anaru was among Kiwis saying how hard it could be to find rentals, while Jane had to live far from Melbourne's centre for affordable rent and talked about a more high-pressure working environment in Australia. Teacher McMahon was also among many missing 'family, friends and Hamilton day trips', while others miss New Zealand's culture. Tuleitu, meanwhile, highlighted how the highs and lows can come in both countries. In 2023, she told the Herald how higher Sydney salaries had meant her family were living 'comfortably' while still donating to their church. It was in contrast to the struggle her parents had gone through in New Zealand, she said at the time. However, their recent struggles had forced them to 'pick' at their savings and reset their goals. Nevertheless, with most of her family having joined her in Australia, she has become an Aussie citizen and says she isn't coming home any time soon.

ThinkGo launches to guide New Zealand SaaS startups to scale

Auckland-based SaaS startup ThinkGo has been launched to provide growth diagnostic tools tailored for early-stage software companies in New Zealand. ThinkGo is the brainchild of Devin Deen, a former US Marine and Silicon Valley executive who has now settled in New Zealand. Drawing on his international experience, Deen aims to address what he describes as "the messy middle" – the stage in a startup's journey that occurs after product launch but before substantial traction has been achieved. Reflecting on the typical path of early-stage SaaS companies, Deen commented on the challenges faced by founders as they navigate this uncertain period. "It's not the product that kills momentum, often it's the chaos around it," says Deen. "ThinkGo is about helping founders focus on what matters, when it matters." ThinkGo offers a practical system to shift founders from confusion to clarity. Deen explained, "It's that point where you've launched something, you've got a few customers, and now the real work begins. Suddenly, you need structure but not too much. You need strategy but not a 60-page slide deck. That's where most founders get stuck." The toolset leverages established frameworks from organisations such as Strategyzer, The Chasm Group, and Lean Startup. "There are plenty of smart models out there," says Deen. "The trick is making them usable by real people, under real pressure." From military to SaaS Deen's background includes graduating from the US Naval Academy and serving as a communications officer in the US Marine Corps. He credits his military experience with instilling discipline and a systems-based approach, which has proven relevant in the unpredictable world of startup growth. After leaving the military, Deen entered the technology sector, joining a SaaS startup in San Jose during the dot-com boom. Reflecting on this period, he said, "I've been around technology pretty much my whole life – though more on the application of technology side. At that startup, I led the customer success team, onboarding new clients, and that's when I really saw how critical customer experience is - especially with early adopters." This insight has become foundational to ThinkGo's development philosophy. "The product's one side, but it's the stuff around it that really counts and helps you attract and retain customers. Marketing, sales, pricing, customer care. And more than that, it starts with people and culture." Bringing global experience to New Zealand After relocating to New Zealand, Deen became active in the country's tech ecosystem, supporting the growth of several consultancies and software companies. Notably, he assisted in the international expansion of which saw its headquarters move to Austin, Texas. He also played a role in the sale of a local tech firm to an Australian company, which was subsequently absorbed by a multinational. "We had about 170 people in our New Zealand business, around 30 of those were in my team. The Aussie acquisition made sense strategically - both companies had similar growth ambitions and cultures. But when our still-forming company was absorbed by the multinational, these were so different it dampened the fire of growth." This experience reinforced Deen's belief in the importance of structure and culture as growth drivers, principles which are now embedded into ThinkGo's approach. Advice for startup founders With a career spanning over 25 years in startups, SaaS, and consulting, Deen encourages founders to focus on clarity over complexity. "Start with product-market fit, then move to go-to-market fit," he says. "That progression is where the real traction happens." He also advises caution against premature optimisation and overengineering. "Especially in software. Your early adopters are giving you the clearest signals. You've got to build with them, listen to them, and iterate fast." Deen highlighted the necessity of reviews and changes as startups scale. "Tools that help get from zero to USD $1 million in revenue, he notes, don't always take you to USD $30 million. When you feel the speed wobbles in your tools, replace them," he says. "But up to that point, my goal is to help founders get there with more confidence and less chaos." The future for ThinkGo ThinkGo represents the culmination of Deen's global experience in startups and his systems-based approach to business growth. With New Zealand's technology sector undergoing continual development, he intends for ThinkGo to assist local founders in scaling their companies whilst maintaining clarity and cultural cohesion.

The $2.3 billion natural health products sector says the Regulation Ministry's review of labelling requirements is welcome, but a fix for the country's broken rules for exporters is urgent and must happen immediately. Currently, manufacturers of dietary supplements are held back by arcane labelling requirements that make it costly and in some cases impossible to export these products to many overseas markets. Natural Health Products NZ has long advocated for a simple exemption for dietary supplement exports, as is common around the world. 'This government has committed to kickstarting the economy and growing exports,' Natural Health Products NZ director of government relations Samantha Gray said. 'As a high-value export industry, the natural health products sector desperately wants to do exactly that. But we're being held back by outdated regulations. 'It has never been more urgent to fix this internal barrier to trade than now. New Zealand exporters have just been slapped with a 15% tariff into the US. Our Aussie neighbours only have a 10% tariff and they already have export exemptions for their dietary supplements. 'If we don't act now, our sector risks falling behind and that risks impacting jobs across high tech manufacturing, growers and producers and the research ecosystem. 'Our message to the Government is by all means do this review, but our sector can't wait months or years, we just need the solution now. We all know what the solution is, we just need to get this fixed." 'With a few simple amendments to regulations to create an export-only exemption, our sector will be able to access, and grow in, large and emerging markets like South East Asia and the Middle East. This will unlock more than half a billion dollars in export growth each year for wellness products. 'We call upon the government to move forward with urgent amendments to permit exported supplements to comply with overseas market access requirements for labelling, composition and health claims.'
