Jess Tubbs frustrated stablemates Better Eclipse and Rakero Rebel will clash in Inter Dominion heat
Rules vary across major races and different states, but often there are 'stable splits' in feature events.
Tubbs, another top Victorian trainer Andy Gath and prominent Queensland trainer Shannon Price all have stable clashes in the first of the three pacing heats on Saturday night.
Gath, who has three pacers in the series, has his two key pacing hopes Tango Tara and Catch Wave against each other.
Like Tubbs, Price only has two pacers in the series – Sure Thing Captain and Speak The Truth – and they lock horns on night one.
'It's frustrating. It's a long way to go to the other end of the country and then have to find a second driver and even a spare sulky when the only two horses you've got up there have to clash,' Tubbs said.
'The fact there are only two (not three) rounds of heats adds to the frustration.
'I'm annoyed, but I'd be a lot more annoyed if they hadn't both drawn so well.'
Better Eclipse, who ran second to Leap To Fame in the 2023 Brisbane Inter Dominion final, has drawn gate one with Rakero Rebel right next door in two.
'They're drawn to get good runs and have their chance,' Tubbs said.
Australia's premier driver James Herbertson was to drive the pair through the series, but with the clash he will be aboard Rakero Rebel.
'I spoke to the owners of Better Eclipse and they wanted Josh Gallagher, so I've popped him on,' Tubbs said.
As expected, Gath's wife, Kate, is down to drive their eight-time Group 1 winner Catch A Wave (gate 11), with Robbie Morris on Tango Tara (eight).
Tubbs' focus will be shared between Albion Park and Melton on Saturday night.
Her emerging star and stable sentimental favourite Fighter Command runs at Melton to continue his build-up towards the world's richest harness race, the $2.1m TAB Eureka, at Menangle on September 6.
'I'm super happy with him. His last run was great and he's building well,' Tubbs said.
'I like the fact he's drawn for a good trailing run (gate eight, inside the back row) this week so he can keep building.
'It's all about ticking him along until The Beautide in Hobart (August 2).
'He'll have this run and one more to be at his top for Tassie.'
Just like he did last year. Fighter Command can secure the Tasracing slot in the TAB Eureka by winning the $80,000 Beautide.
But last year, the then three-year-old was struck down with a life threatening bout of colic just days before the TAB Eureka and missed the race.
'There's certainly some unfinished business, but given what happened last year, we're all just going one race at a time for the moment.
'Hopefully we get to the Beautide, get the job done there, and then start to focus on the Eureka.'
Such is the boom on Fighter Command, he is $5 second pre-post favourite behind another Victorian star Bay Of Biscay ($3.50) for the TAB Eureka.

All eyes are on which two drivers are chosen for the new Cadillac team, which is joining F1 in 2026 as the sport's 11th team. The Cadillac-General Motors team is believed to be keen on starting out with a veteran presence of drivers who have been on the grid before. Former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez and Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas are the current favourites to drive for Cadillac next year, but the American team could take a punt on a US driver or an unproven rookie. Ricciardo remains a hugely popular figure in America and among F1 fans, but he didn't sound like a man desperate for a racing comeback as he gave an update on how retired life is going. 'I'm just enjoying some life in the slow lane,' Ricciardo said. 'I mean, it sounds weird saying like retirement when I'm 35 years old, but retirement from at least the world I was living in. It's cool.' Ricciardo is in the UK at the moment ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and he was spotted soaking in the Day 2 action at Wimbledon on his 36th birthday. The WA native cut a relaxed figure as he watched the tennis at the All England Club, looking content as he enjoyed the day out with his parents Grace and Joe. Ricciardo wants to inspire the next generation of race car drivers through his Daniel Ricciardo Series, where youngsters compete in karting events across the UK. The eight-time F1 race winner attended the latest round of his karting series at Buckmore Park in England last weekend, giving him a different perspective. 'To be at the kart track… it's my first time at a racetrack since I guess Singapore, so quite a few months now,' Ricciardo said. 'But it's cool to see the kids… this is why I started karting. 'I've had photos with groups of the kids and I can tell the friendships they have, and these friendships will last a lifetime a lot of them. 'My best friend to this day was a friend that I raced karts with. It's nice to be back at like the grassroots of it and the most pure form of racing.' Now he is the one getting mobbed by the kids. 'I think now that I'm a bit removed from it and life is not as chaotic, it's nice to remember what it was like to be at the start of the career,' he said. 'We all have idols and heroes… 'I would be very nervous meeting someone who I admired, so I understand sometimes it's a bit overwhelming. But everyone seems pretty cool. I guess maybe I'm not the only driver they've met before – there's a lot of F1 fans here! 'I think just to have someone that you want to try and obviously look up to and someone that can inspire you… if I'm able to sprinkle a tiny bit of inspiration or motivation today by being here and having a chat to a few kids, that's awesome. That's something I know I appreciated when I was eight, nine, 10 years old.' Ricciardo said his advice for any youngster coming through the karting scene was simply to 'go and have fun!'. 'It was always just, 'Go and have fun',' he said. 'It wasn't about trying to impress someone or be someone you're not. 'If you do this you'll be on TV and make money'. It wasn't about that, it was just, 'Go and have fun'. 'It kind of helped me also… like racing is scary, you know? I think it helped me at school have a bit more confidence. Everyone's shy, we all go through things growing up, so I think it kind of gave me confidence in myself as a person, also away from the track. So, that's something I took from it. 'But as far as the driving goes, honestly it was just about me having fun. I was playing with my friends (at the track), we were riding scooters and stuff, and my dad was always dragging me like, 'The kart's on the grid, put your helmet on!' 'The karting was kind of secondary a lot of the time. It was just to be in this environment with friends.' to 15 points with victory at the Austrian Grand Prix.

NRL 2025: Broncos lose Corey Jensen, Jesse Arthars for Bulldogs clash
The Broncos have been dealt a double blow with Corey Jensen and Jesse Arthars ruled out of the side's trip to Sydney to face the Bulldogs, with coach Michael Maguire backing the recalled Selwyn Cobbo to fire in his first game in a month. Jensen (calf) and Arthars (rib) will miss Friday night's clash, while veteran Ben Hunt is likely to return next week as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. It's a blow for the Broncos who were already without Origin stars Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, Reece Walsh and Gehamat Shibasaki for next week's decider, but Maguire is confident his forward pack can get the job done. I stood here at the same thing last week talking about the same story. Selwyn is now focused on playing,' he said. 'We talk about players and how it's hard to keep everyone. That's what we're working through. 'Selly is working through this year and we've got a great opportunity with where we are at the moment. The competition is well and truly alive. 'Selly has been good over the past month. 'As much as you talk about turbulent, we've worked through things and Selly is really focused on playing with his teammates. 'He's in good form at the moment and trained really well just then, so he's ready to go.'

NO SHOCK RETIREMENT BACKFLIP FOR STAR Despite the rumblings, Brisbane Lions premiership forward Joe Daniher is a 'zero per cent chance' of doing a retirement backflip, according to the Herald Sun's Jon Ralph. Daniher retired at the end of last year after playing 204 games at the top level, culminating in the ultimate success with Brisbane in 2025. Reports have recently linked him to the Sydney Swans, but Ralph has since quashed those rumours. 'He's not making a shock comeback. The market is so thin that clubs are asking about him,' Ralph revealed on Fox Footy's Midweek Tackle. Clubs were trying to get Joe Daniher to come out of retirement. 'He's been linked to Sydney in the last week or two, of course they were the club that were really interested in him initially and then he found his way to Brisbane,' he said. 'Sydney's asking everyone including Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, but Daniher's really set up financially, he's not interested in the money. I think if he was a one per cent chance he'd come back to Brisbane anyway, people close to him say he is a zero per cent chance. 'He's got businesses to interest him as well, he's on the trip of his life in Europe right now, wouldn't that be lovely, but say it ain't so, no Joe.' Daniher won six club goalkicking awards throughout his career and was named All-Australian and Essendon's best and fairest in 2017. FREO MAKE RUCK CALL Fremantle are in the luxurious position of having not one, but two star rucks as a part of their squad right now in Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy. Jackson has flourished with more ruck time in 2025, especially when Darcy has been sidelined at various stages with knee and ankle injuries. The pair are both locked in to long term deals at the Dockers, Darcy until 2030 and Jackson until 2029, but Jackson's recent form, which has seen Darcy miss selection on occasion, has led to speculation that rival clubs could chase Darcy. But the Dockers have given reassurances to Darcy that he is still a key cog in their planning. Appearing on AFL Media's Gettable this week, Darcy's agent Scott Lucas from Phoenmix Management Group said the star ruck wouldn't be on the move. 'The first point is just to have a chat to Freo, just to ask how they think it's going. That's just a manager and a player doing their job. On the back of that, they reinforced how important they think the two-ruck role is,' Lucas said. 'Sean has been more than OK with that, in my discussions with him. It's not something we dwell too much on. I certainly understand it, though. Gee, it takes up a lot of talk time doesn't it? 'I often relate it to the back-up quarterback and the way that clubs shape their list around it. The majority of rucks are one-position players, but you can't just have one or two on your list. If you carry four, then 10 percent of your list is for one position. But it's when you get injuries in that position, you're desperate to have another one.' The Dockers are still working through the mix, but it certainly worked a treat against the Saints on the weekend, when the pair both stood up in crucial moments. 'I understand the position and why and part of it is Luke has played really good football. But no (clubs haven't asked the question of Darcy and his future) is the short answer,' Lucas said. 'We've had some discussions with Freo, as it is our job and it is regularly occurring, and they're really invested in both the rucks and how they can work together for the benefit of the team.' 'NO RUSH' ON KEY TRADE TARGET Sam Walsh is in no rush to make a call on his future, despite rival clubs circling the star Blue. Walsh is contracted at Ikon Park until the end of 2026, but manager Scott Lucas said the star midfielder is in no rush to make any decisions right now. 'I think there's a lot, through no intention of any of the players, but all of those players continue to be talked about. Like there's not a day that goes by and it's on the back of their performance, I think, isn't it? That's fair to say Carlton aren't performing where they expect,' Lucas told AFL Media's Gettable. 'They've got five or six excellent players and all of those. I mean, I read a quote yesterday that, you know, the only player that shouldn't be on the table is a player that hasn't played a game yet in Jagga Smith. So that starts the narrative. 'But as for our discussion with Sam and Carlton, there is no need for one at the moment. I mean, he's got another year and a half under contract, all going well, loves the club, close with the guys. So for our perspective, it's just let it unfold as such.' When quizzed on whether the Blues had started discussions with Walsh, Lucas had this to say. 'We're always in discussion with clubs around players like that, so we've had a discussion. At this stage he's not playing, so there's no rush in that sense. But please read nothing into it.' MCKERCHER'S BIG TASSIE CALL Colby McKercher has signed a two-year contract extension at North Melbourne, tying him to the club until the end of 2028. The young gun's signature is a huge win for the Roos, given Tasmania were expected to circle the star youngster as one of their marquee players. McKercher is now the only Tasmanian contracted beyond 2027, when the Devils are slated to enter the competition. The Tasmanian duo of Bulldogs midfielder Ryley Sanders and young Giant James Leake are both yet to re-sign with their respective clubs since being drafted, but for McKercher, he's hoping the Roos continue to rise. 'The potential that we could be playing finals next year with the way I see the group and how we are improving is really exciting and that is definitely a big reason why I re-signed,' he said.
