Southern Cable in line to win MRT3 deals: Apex Securities
In a recent report, Apex Securities Bhd estimated that, assuming a cable supply package valued at RM600 million, with 60% market share and a blended gross profit margin of 15%, Southern Cable could generate RM54 million in gross profit from MRT3—equivalent to 25% of the research firm's FY25 forecast.
'This would provide a meaningful uplift to earnings visibility over the medium term,' Apex said.
The MRT3 project has received final approval from the Transport Ministry, enabling the land acquisition process to begin. The project is targeted for completion by end-2026.
The MRT3 Circle Line will span 51km, comprising 31 stations. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with full operations expected by 2032.
In rail infrastructure projects, cable supply contracts are usually split across several key work packages including power supply systems, signalling and control systems, track works, and station components.
As a reference point, MRT2, which spans 52.2km with 36 stations, has a total project cost of RM56.9 billion. Cable supply contracts for MRT2 were estimated at around RM550 million, according to market sources.
'Given the comparable scale of MRT3, we estimate the cable supply package to be valued at RM600 million,' Apex added.
In light of MRT3 and other infrastructure rollouts such as the Penang LRT, Apex Securities has revised its earnings forecasts upward by 9.5% for FY26 and 18.5% for FY27.
The research firm noted that cable orders for large infrastructure projects are typically distributed across multiple packages and subcontractors.
This results in staggered purchase orders, rather than a single lump-sum entry in Southern Cable's order book.
'We raise our price-earnings (PE) multiple from 15x to 17x to reflect Southern Cable's improving earnings visibility and robust growth outlook.
'Valuation remains attractive, with a price/earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio of 0.4x, based on our projected EPS compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33.9% for FY24–27.
'Our revised target price of RM2.14, up from RM1.72, is based on a 17x FY26 EPS of 12.6 sen, and supported by a three-star ESG rating.
'We maintain a 'Buy' call on Southern Cable. We remain positive on the company, given its position as a proxy for Malaysia's rising power demand, growing need for high-voltage power cables, and export exposure to the US market,' Apex Securities concluded.

Padi floor price hike to RM1,500 brings relief to farmers
PARIT BUNTAR: A recent hike in Malaysia's padi floor price to RM1,500 is being seen as a critical step in sustaining the country's rice industry, as farmers grapple with mounting input costs and declining profits. Parit Abas farmer, Zulfahmi Akhyar, 35, said the RM200 increase has somewhat helped ease the rising costs of cultivating padi fields. "Previously, we were affected by the increase in diesel prices, not to mention the costs of seeds, pesticides, and other necessities. "Moreover, this season we did not receive the RM600 interim assistance while waiting for the padi to mature, as we had before. "So this additional RM200 helps ease the burden we've been carrying in managing our fields. "Many small-scale farmers like me can't bear the cost of living and farming at the same time. This move at least gives us some breathing room," he said. He added that he hopes the government will continue to listen to farmers and consider additional aid in the future, especially during the monsoon season, which greatly affects harvests. Last October, the government's decision to increase the padi purchase floor price to RM1,300 per tonne under the 2024 Budget, up from RM1,200, which had remained unchanged since 2014, brought relief to farmers struggling with the rising costs of rice farming. Another farmer, Mohd Naim Othman, 34, said that in his seven years of farming, this was the best news he had received. "Back in the early 2000s, the floor price was only RM1,200. The increase to RM1,300 gave farmers renewed motivation to continue working the fields. "Today's announcement by the prime minister truly brings new hope to farmers, as we had nearly given up due to the rising costs of farming. "Now, this eases our hardship a little and gives new spirit to us, the younger generation, to keep cultivating padi," he said. He added that the younger generation needs support from the government to remain in this sector, and such an increase shows that their hard work is being valued. "Support like this must continue, not just for profit, but for the sake of national food security," he said. Earlier today Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the minimum purchase price of padi has been increased to RM1,500 for this year, and the paddy price subsidy scheme rate has also been raised to RM500.

Aluminium prices hold strong despite US tariff concerns
DESPITE ongoing uncertainties due to the US tariffs, we believe aluminium prices will remain supportive amid the tight global supply, albeit offset by moderating demand. 'We remain positive on the outlook for aluminium smelters mainly due to easing alumina costs,' said RHB. LME aluminium prices have been more volatile with the imposition of US tariffs, dropping to a low of USD2,300/tonne in April, but prices have since recovered to USD2,600/tonne. While the tariffs have raised concerns on slower demand for aluminium, LME aluminium prices are supported as the overall global supply remains tight amid delays in the ramping up of new smelting capacity in Europe due to high energy costs, and limited room to grow in China as it nears the 45m tonne annual production cap. That said, the Main Japanese Port (MJP) premium has fallen by 58% year-to-date (YTD) due to the higher supply in Asia following reduced interest in exporting to the US, whereas the US Midwest premium has risen 200% YTD. On the cost side, alumina prices have decreased 46% YTD, accounting for only 14% of LME aluminium prices, down from a peak of 31% in Dec 2024, as supply chain disruptions from Guinea eased. This bodes well for aluminium smelters, with a ramp-up in new refinery capacities in Asia. In the longer term, we remain positive on PMAH as it targets increasing alumina self-sufficiency from 23% currently to c.99% by 2027, with the new refinery project in Indonesia. Even if alumina prices fall further, Indonesia remains costcompetitive for alumina refineries due to its bauxite export ban. Conversely, carbon anode costs have risen 23% YTD, driven by higher petroleum coke prices, following supply disruptions. That said, margin should still be supported as carbon anodes make up a relatively small portion of smelting costs. Last week, the Transport Ministry formally approved the scheme for MRT Circle Line, or also known as MRT 3. Land acquisition is expected to be completed by end-2026, with contract awards and construction of the 51.6km line to begin in 2027. We believe this will boost demand for cement in the midlong term, and anticipate LMC to be one of the biggest beneficiaries, given its huge market share of 60-70%. Additionally, while LMC's cement supply contract for the East Coast Rail Link Phase 1 ended in 2024, management guided that it is still supplying cement for Phase 2, albeit without an exclusive contract. We note that bulk cement prices have remained stable at MYR380/tonne since Jul 2023, while coal prices have declined by 12% YTD, easing cost pressures for cement producers. Key downside risks are rising input costs and a global slowdown, which could tamper construction activity and weaken demand for aluminium and cement. —July 23, 2025 Main image: Aluminium Online
