Lawyer Suspended For Two Years Over Fake Rs 80,000 Court Fee Charged From Client
The three-member disciplinary committee also directed the advocate to pay Rs 25,000 as costs to the complainant within a month of receiving the order.
In a disciplinary action against professional misconduct, the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa (BCMG) has suspended advocate Ranjeeta Vengurlekar from practising law for two years after finding her guilty of duping a client by charging a fictitious court fee of Rs 80,000.
The three-member disciplinary committee — comprising Chairman Dr Uday Warunjikar and members Sangram Desai and Aniruddha Garge — also directed the advocate to pay Rs 25,000 as costs to the complainant within a month of receiving the order.
The complaint was filed by Abhijeet Jagannath Zadokar, who alleged that Vengurlekar had taken Rs 80,000 from him under the pretext of paying court fees, but handed over a fraudulent receipt. He claimed that over time, he paid a total of Rs 1.5 lakh for legal services, and ultimately suffered financial losses to the tune of Rs 21 lakh due to the mishandling of his legal matter.
The advocate denied all allegations, claiming that the money was partly her professional fee, and that the complainant had merely sought legal consultation from her office in Badlapur. She also denied any responsibility for the alleged financial losses suffered by the complainant.
However, during the inquiry, the complainant stepped into the witness box and submitted detailed evidence, including WhatsApp exchanges and a Section 65B certificate authenticating the electronic records. The committee found that despite being served through post and even personally via messenger, neither Vengurlekar nor her lawyer appeared for the hearings after filing a brief written reply.
The committee noted that the evidence submitted by the complainant had remained unchallenged throughout the proceedings, as the respondent failed to cross-examine or counter the claims.
'Bare perusal of the record goes to show that the complainant has proved his case about misconduct," the committee observed, holding that the receipt allegedly provided by the advocate for the Rs. 80,000 court fee was prima facie bogus. It added that although criminal action may also lie in such matters, the Bar Council's scope was limited to examining misconduct under Section 35 of the Advocates Act.
The disciplinary body emphasized that while it was not passing any order on other prayers made by the complainant, it found sufficient grounds to impose a professional penalty.
We are of the view that it would be appropriate to pass an order of suspension for period of two years, the order concluded.

Nari Shakti: Astha Poonia becomes Indian Navy's first woman fighter pilot
Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], July 4 (ANI): Sub Lieutenant Astha Poonia officially became the first woman to be streamed into the fighter stream of Naval Aviation. Paving the way for a new era of women fighter pilots in the force, and shattering barriers, Poonia also received the prestigious 'Wings of Gold' from Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Air). According to the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Navy celebrated the graduation of the Second Basic Hawk Conversion Course at the Naval Air Station, INS Dega, in Visakhapatnam. Lieutenant Atul Kumar Dhull and Sub-Lieutenant Astha Poonia received the prestigious 'Wings of Gold' from Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, ACNS (Air) on July 3. Earlier on Thursday, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared 10 capital acquisition proposals worth approximately Rs 1.05 lakh crore for the procurement of indigenously sourced quick reaction surface-to-air missiles, naval vessels, and other equipment. The DAC accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for capital acquisition proposals, including the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, Electronic Warfare System, Integrated Common Inventory Management System for the Tri-Services, and Surface-to-Air Missiles, according to an official statement from the Defence Ministry. The Council met for the first time after Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 in response to the heinous Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people. India's response was deliberate, precise, and strategic. Without crossing the Line of Control or international boundary, Indian forces struck terrorist infrastructure and eliminated multiple threats. Additionally, the ministry stated that AoNs were also accorded for the procurement of Moored Mines, Mine Countermeasure Vessels, Super Rapid Gun Mounts, and Submersible Autonomous Vessels, to enable the mitigation of potential risks posed to naval and Merchant Vessels. Earlier, on June 30, defence sources reported that the tri-services had submitted various proposals for procurement, including the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile System, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The project, worth around Rs 30,000 crore, would be critical for the Indian Army's air defence capabilities as the system can be effective against targets up to 30 km. The three aircraft would be acquired from an original equipment manufacturer and then be modified by the DRDO lab Centre for Airborne Systems in partnership with private partners. (ANI)

Sebi's Jane Street ban: Zerodha's Nikhil Kamath shocked trading firm ‘kept at it despite warnings'; quips ‘they're used to lenient US regulatory regime'
Market regulator Sebi's sweeping action against global proprietary trading firm Jane Street has triggered wider concerns about India's options markets, with Zerodha founder and CEO Nithin Kamath warning that the crackdown, while justified, could adversely affect retail trading activity and hit exchanges and brokers. 'You've got to hand it to SEBI for going after Jane Street. If the allegations are true, it's blatant market manipulation. The shocking part? They kept at it even after receiving warnings from the exchanges. Maybe this is what happens when you're used to the lenient US regulatory regime. Think about the structure of U.S. markets: dark pools, payment for order flow, and other loopholes that allow hedge funds to make billions off retail investors. None of these practices would be allowed in India, thanks to our regulators,' Kamath posted on X. 'That said, there's a flip side. Prop trading firms like Jane Street account for nearly 50% of options trading volumes. If they pull back— which seems likely —retail activity (~35%) could take a hit too. So this could be bad news for both exchanges and brokers. The next few days will be telling. F&O volumes might reveal just how reliant we are on these prop giants. I'll share more data as and when anything interesting turns up,' he added. Jane Street is accused of executing a massive Rs 36,500 crore scam by booking Rs 43,289 crore in options profits while deliberately incurring Rs 7,208 crore in losses in the futures and equities markets, according to an ET report. Sebi, in a 105-page interim order issued Thursday, said the firm manipulated market prices by gaming the auction mechanism on the NSE and the BSE, thereby distorting the true price discovery process. The interim order imposed sweeping restrictions on Jane Street and its related entities. The firms have been barred from accessing the securities market — directly or indirectly — and their bank, demat, and custodial accounts have been frozen. While no debits are permitted without Sebi's approval, credits can be accepted. In addition, the regulator has ordered the impounding of Rs 4,843.57 crore in alleged illegal gains, to be placed in an escrow account with a lien in Sebi's favour. The entities have also been prohibited from disposing of or alienating any of their assets in India until the full amount is deposited. Sebi has given Jane Street 21 days to file objections and has offered the opportunity for a personal hearing. In response, Jane Street told Reuters in an emailed statement: 'Jane Street is committed to operating in compliance with all regulations in the regions we operate around the world. Jane Street disputes the findings of the SEBI interim order and will further engage with the regulator.' Meanwhile, stock exchanges have been instructed to closely monitor any future dealings by the firm to ensure there is no recurrence of similar behaviour. Praveen Nettaru murder case: NIA arrests wanted accused on arrival from Qatar
ANI 04 Jul 2025, 19:37 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], July 4 (ANI): In a significant development in its ongoing probe into the targeted murder of BJP Yuva Morcha member Praveen Nettaru, allegedly carried out by members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday arrested a prime accused who had been on the run for two years. The accused, Abdul Rahaman, who carried a bounty of Rs 4 lakh, was arrested by an NIA team upon his arrival from Qatar at Kannur International Airport. A total of four accused, including Rahaman and two other absconders, were chargesheeted by NIA in this case in April this year, taking the total chargesheeted in the case to 28. NIA had also declared rewards for information relating to six absconders. Rahaman was carrying a reward of Rs 4 lakh for this arrest. NIA investigations had revealed that 'Rahaman had, on directions of PFI leadership, voluntarily harboured the main assailants and others involved in the case.' 'Rahaman had fled to Qatar after the attackers were arrested,' said the NIA in a statement. Nettaru was brutally killed with sharp weapons by PFI cadres and members on July 26, 2022 in Bellare village of Sullia Taluk in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district. The killing was part of a larger conspiracy aimed at striking terror among the people and unleashing communal hatred and unrest in the society. NIA, which had re-registered the case as of August 4, 2022, is trying to track down the remaining absconders. (ANI)
