Van Dyk delivers commanding performance at league meeting

The Citizen30-07-2025
After taking part in the 2km race in her previous two leagues, Chelsea van Dyk delivered a timely reminder to her rivals that the U14 girls' 4km is her race with a solid, dominant performance at the last CGA cross-country league meeting in Brakpan on July 26.
Van Dyk put in a commanding display that featured grit, resilience, and unmatched focus, tearing through the two-lap course in 14:49, bursting clear of Langaville AC's Zanele Mzizi who crossed the line in second place in 15:46.
The Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) athlete's showing at Charl Baard Stadium laid the platform for an interesting race at the provincial championships in Germiston on August 16.
While the challenge is going to come from all angles, with the likes of Mzizi, Nedbank's Boipelo Maroga, and Natalie Strydom of Kempies showcasing incredible form all season, Van Dyk's goal is clear.
'It's always going to be defending my title and ensuring I'm dominant,' she said.
Afterwards, the two-time national champion will focus on defending her title at the ASA cross-country championships in Middelburg, where she will likely face a strong challenge from the likes of Athletics Vaal Triangle's (AVT) Xander Harris.
Before that, however, the 14-year-old St Dunstan's College Grade Eight learner will earn her national colours when she represents the country at the Confederation of School Sport of Southern Africa (COSSASA) Games in Eswatini from August 26 to 31.
'I'm very excited. It won't only be my first time running internationally; it will also be my first time representing South Africa. Although it's not the whole of Africa, it's still bigger than what I've ever done. It's very fulfilling,' Van Dyk said.
Though the COSSASA Games are just a taste of competing on an international stage, the Central Gauteng athlete understands that most professional athletes use such events as stepping stones to bigger stages like the Olympic Games.
'Obviously, you have small goals and stepping stones to get to your final goal. That's definitely my goal. That's at the top.'

Lotter digs deep in steamy Singapore to crack world top 20

While the country's swimming team left the World Aquatics Championships with four medals, thanks to Pieter Coetzé's gold and two silvers and Kaylene Corbett's bronze, the pick of the SA athletes competing in other sports at the event in Singapore was open water swimmer from Pretoria, Callan Lotter. The 19-year-old secured 16th place in all three of the events she contested – the 5km and 10km as well as the newly introduced 3km knockout swim. That was a marked improvement on the 29th place she achieved in the 10km at last year's World Aquatics Championships in Doha. The Pretoria University student could be particularly proud considering the tough conditions in Singapore, where the 10km race was postponed twice because of the water quality and the steamy water temperature was almost beyond the limit to compete. 'This was one of the hardest 10km races I had ever swum in my life, with the 31 degrees warm water and huge waves. My body started cramping up early in the race. I knew that it was going to be a long race, and I am extremely proud of myself in how I overcame this,' explained Lotter. She knew she was in good shape heading into the championships, having finished 13th in the 10km race and 11th in the 3km knockout at the Setúbal leg of the Open Water World Cup series in June. 'I knew that I was capable of finishing in the top 20 or even better. I had done all the training that I could have to the best of my abilities. I was confident in my abilities going into the competition and I am proud of the outcome,' she said. Lotter added that these results have been a major confidence boost, looking ahead to the next World Championships and then Olympic Games in 2028. 'This competition boosted my experience and racing on the international stage, which helps me prepare for more World Championships and the Olympics. I try to learn as much as possible from each race and use the experience in my future racing. It makes me more determined to swim and compete with the best open water swimmers in the world,' Lotter concluded. Do you have more information about the story? Versatile Proteas squad named for tough New Zealand and Australia tour

The 2025 Proteas squad that will travel to New Zealand and Australia, minus Sanmarie Visser, who is currently in Australia. Image: Netball South Africa National netball team coach Jenny van Dyk feels that the versatile players chosen to travel to New Zealand and Australia, to take on the two top-ranked sides in the world in September and October, will compensate for a lack of depth in some key positions. Van Dyk named the Spar Proteas squad for the daunting clashes on Monday. With the likes of Boitumelo Mahloko out injured and Syntiche Kabuya unavailable for selection, defenders Entle Futshane, Nozipho Ntshangase, and Juanita van Tonder join the squad for the first time after impressing in this season's Telkom Netball League. 📢 𝐒𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 Meet your new SPAR Proteas squad — ready to fight, inspire, and wear the green & gold with pride. 🇿🇦 Now it's our turn to stand behind them. Midcourt dynamo Khanyisa Chawane will continue to captain the side, which also includes the always-entertaining Kamogelo Maseko, the TNL Player of the Tournament Tarle Mathe, and top scorer in the Netball Super League this season, Rolene Streutker. 'For this tour we are well aware of the fact that we don't have the exact depth we've envisioned in one or two key positions yet, but we have very versatile players within our core group that can get the job done for this tour, and we have a plan in place to create the depth we need afterwards,' Van Dyk said. She explained that trials held in Johannesburg over the weekend were the final step in the selection process, allowing them the opportunity to test combinations between foreign- and local-based players. 'If you are going to take on the best in the world, you need players with experience, grit and a fierce fighting spirit, and we believe within our core group that is exactly what we have.' Assistant coach Zanele Mdodana said the tour is crucial in the build-up to both the Commonwealth Games and the next Netball World Cup. 'We are going to go full force into these Test matches with the objective of really sharpening ourselves, whil also gauging where we are compared to the professional teams in the world,' said Mdodana "We know that the players are fully aware as to what our objectives are and how we're going to go about achieving them. There's the Commonwealth Games next year, there's the World Cup in 2027, and everything that we're doing is aligning to ultimately assist us in achieving our objectives.' While the Proteas went down to the Aussie Diamonds in a series at the start of 2023, their last match against New Zealand's Silver Ferns was their memorable 48-all draw at the Netball World Cup on home soil in Cape Town, also in 2023.
