St Mirren motivated by pre-season predictions of struggle

The Nationala day ago
The St Mirren captain has noted that once again, his side don't seem to feature too heavily among the teams fancied to be competing in the top half of the table come the end of the campaign, despite being the only team outside of Celtic and Rangers to make the top six in each of the last three seasons.
But that suits O'Hara and his teammates just fine. A battling showing in their Premiership opener at Celtic Park may have ended with the heartbreaking concession of a late goal, but there was more than enough in their performance to suggest that Stephen Robinson and his men will be a force to be reckoned with once more this season, no matter what anyone else may think.
'Since I've been here, a lot of people wrote us off most seasons,' O'Hara said.
(Image: SNS Group) 'I've seen a lot of predictions this week, top six and things like that from the media and outwith that, and I've noticed we're not in that. That suits us to come as the underdogs again this year and we can just go quietly about our business.'

The foundation for O'Hara's confidence comes from the work that his manager and the club's recruitment team have done over the close season, with new arrivals like goalkeeper Shamal George, Jayden Richardson, Richard King, Tunmise Sobowale and Roland Idowu all showing up well in the narrow defeat at Celtic Park.
'It's been a really exciting summer,' he said.
'We've brought in a lot of players, and there's a freshness to it this year that maybe there hasn't been in previous years.
'Although there is the core squad, which I think you do need as well, the continuity and the know-how from the boys that have been there, but there's definitely a freshness this year, and I'm sure we're going to be exciting to watch.
'It will take time for some of the new players to understand what the manager wants and how he works. There is a set way. I think when new boys come into the team, they will be surprised at the culture and how hard everyone works and how together everyone is.
'We've added boys that have got good character and they're going to learn and understand that. They're definitely pushing the boat forward.'
And O'Hara had particular praise for former Ross County keeper George.
'He obviously gives us confidence,' he said.
'He collects the ball well and his kicking's good. That was obviously the first real test he's had, and I thought he was excellent. I'm sure he's going to be a massive player for us.
'Ever since I've been here, the goalkeepers have been such a key part in why we've achieved top six the last three years.
'To add the quality of Shamal is going to be massive for us again, and I'm sure he's up to the task.'
O'Hara was obviously disappointed by the manner of the late deflected goal that St Mirren conceded to ensure they had nothing material to show for what was a huge effort against the champions, but he is certain that the feeling won't linger, as he and his teammates gear up for the visit of Motherwell to Paisley this weekend.
'In terms of effort, we put a lot into that,' he said.
(Image: Rob Casey - SNS Group) 'You know you are going to need to concentrate for the full 96-97 minutes and to not get over the line, everybody's really disappointed.
'People outside ourselves don't really give us a chance going to Celtic Park, but we saw it as a good chance to cause an upset on the opening day. Although there are positives to take and we will look forward to next week, we are disappointed.
'Especially because everyone has done their jobs, and a deflection, I don't think you do much about it at times.'

Rangers team to face Viktoria Plzen named as Russell Martin makes changes

New signing Oliver Antman has gone straight into the Rangers side to face Viktoria Plzen as Russell Martin has rung the changes for the Champions League clash at Ibrox. Martin was furious with his side after their 1-1 draw at Motherwell in the opening Premiership game on Saturday and said that he would 'have to work out quickly who really wants to listen and who will really fight and run'. He said too many went into 'self-preservation mode' and had to 'drop their ego'. The manager later said his comments came 'from a place of love' but made it clear he would not accept players who didn't give their all, and those who reacted badly to criticism wouldn't have a place in his squad. That prompted interest in his starting line-up for the test against Viktoria Plzen and Martin has made changes. New signing Oliver Antman goes straight into the starting line-up just a day after joining the club, and there is also a place for Lyall Cameron in a surprising side that sees captain James Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin dropped to the bench. Jack Butland starts in goal behind a back four of Jefte, John Souttar, Nasser Djiga and Max Aarons. Joe Rothwell anchors the midfield, with Mohamed Diomande and Cameron in the heart of the side. Antman and Djeidi Gassama are on the wings, either side of Cyriel Dessers. Rangers saw off Panathinaikos to reach this stage and the winners will go on to face RB Salzburg or Club Brugge in the play-off round, with the prize for the winner being a place in the lucrative League Phase. Michael Stewart has asked a teasing Hearts and Rangers themed question as Tony Bloom's investment rolls into Gorgie. Most Hearts fans were left delighted when they heard that the majority shareholder at English Premier League side, Brighton and Hove Albion, would be investing £9.86m in their club. He has now made a statement at a question and answer event for the Foundation of Hearts, outlining that he'd be disappointed if at least one league title was not won with Hearts in the next decade. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Bloom also went on to say that it's not good for Scottish football to be a 'one or two club show' and that The Jambos could potentially come second as soon as this season. The statement of intent has gone down a treat with Hearts fans as well as with supporters across the board of non old firm sides. Former Hearts midfielder turned outspoken pundit, Michael Stewart believes the statement from Bloom was a positive one and is refreshing for the Scottish game. Whereas his Premier Sports Social Club counterpart and former Rangers man, Alan Hutton wasn't so sure. Stewart believes Bloom statement will breed 'greater interest' in Scottish game Speaking on the Social Club, Stewart said: 'Forget even about Hearts fans, remember the way neutrals felt when Aberdeen went on an unbelievable run at the start of last season, it is exactly what is needed, I could not agree more with what Tony Bloom is saying. 'Greater competition breeds greater interest and it is brilliant to hear. Also you are talking about a guy who has a track record with clubs that he has been involved with, the main one being Union Saint Gilloise, he's done brilliant with his connection at Como as well where he's brought in players that have been sold for big money. For him to be coming out and talk about looking to win at least one title in the next decade, I think that is music to the ears of all neutrals in Scottish football.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Stewart then went on to half-jokingly ask Alan Hutton if he thinks Hearts will win a title before Rangers, to which the former right back responded with a swift 'no.' Bloom's track record speaks for itself Whether you agree with Stewart or not, there is no denying that he is 100% accurate when talking about Bloom's track record. Union Saint Gilloise hadn't won a Belgian top tier title for 90 years and were languishing in the second division before Bloom came along and transformed them into Pro League champions last year. Furthermore, during his time at Brighton he has turned them into a prominent Premier League side, who are arguably one of the best run clubs in the English top flight. The Seagulls have brought in talent such as Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister and Leandro Trossard over the past five years and have made a profit of over £200m on these players alone.
