Five Malaysians choose to stay in Iran despite evacuation call
REMBAU: Only five Malaysians, including four students and a businessman, have decided to stay in Iran despite the government's evacuation advisory, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
He confirmed that the evacuation process for Malaysians in Iran concluded on June 21, with most returning home. However, the five individuals signed a letter of undertaking to remain, expressing gratitude to the Malaysian government for its assistance.
'The four students are in Qom and Esfahan, while the businessman is also staying. They have assured us of their safety and decision to remain,' Mohamad told reporters after officiating the 52nd General Meeting of the Kaum Ibu Penajes Cooperative.
Earlier reports indicated that 24 individuals, including Malaysians, arrived safely at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) via Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. The group consisted of 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents, and one Singaporean national.
Separately, Mohamad announced Malaysia's collaboration with Indonesia to explore economic development in the maritime border area of Ambalat. He stated that both nations are working towards a joint development agreement to benefit from the region's natural resources.
'Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are committed to finalising this cooperation, similar to the Gulf of Siam model,' he added.

Iran uranium enrichment could resume in months despite attacks: IAEA
VIENNA: The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has stated that Iran could resume uranium enrichment 'in a matter of months' despite recent attacks on its nuclear facilities by the US and Israel. The remarks came during an interview with CBS News, highlighting ongoing concerns over Tehran's nuclear capabilities. Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites on June 13, claiming the operation aimed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons—an ambition Iran has repeatedly denied. The US followed with strikes on three key atomic program facilities. While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the damage as 'serious,' specifics remain unclear. US President Donald Trump asserted the attacks set back Iran's nuclear progress by 'decades.' However, Grossi cautioned that some infrastructure remains operational. 'They can have, you know, in a matter of months, I would say, a few cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium, or less than that,' he said. A critical uncertainty surrounds Iran's stockpile of 408.6 kg (900 lbs) of highly enriched uranium, which is refined to 60% purity—above civilian use but below weapons grade. If further processed, this material could theoretically yield over nine nuclear bombs. Grossi admitted, 'We don't know where this material could be,' suggesting some may have been destroyed or relocated before the attacks. Iran has since suspended cooperation with the IAEA, rejecting Grossi's request to inspect damaged sites, including the Fordo enrichment facility. 'We need to be in a position to ascertain, to confirm what is there, and where is it and what happened,' Grossi emphasised. In a Fox News interview, Trump dismissed claims that Iran moved its uranium stockpile, stating, 'They didn't move anything.' Farmers' incentives to be paid out by July 31
PUTRAJAYA: The government will ensure that all payments for the ploughing and harvesting incentives to farmers are completed by July 31, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu (pic). He said the total amount of the incentive was RM210, comprising RM160 for ploughing and RM50 for harvesting. He added that the matter had been discussed at the Cabinet Committee on National Food Security Policy (FSCC) Meeting 1/2025, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 16. 'The meeting focused on strategic initiatives to strengthen the country's food security and boost the growth of the agriculture and agro-food sectors. 'Various other initiatives were also discussed, including strategies to increase the country's self-sufficiency rate (SSR) for beef and buffalo meat to ensure sustainability of the nation's food supply,' he said in a statement, Bernama reported. On June 11, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) announced an increase in the ploughing incentive rate and introduced a harvesting incentive, providing total cash assistance of RM210 per hectare to padi farmers each season, benefiting around 130,000 farmers across the peninsula. Mohamad also said the government welcomed the development of the Malaysian Food Composition Database as a strategic component of the National Food Security Policy. He said the meeting had also agreed in principle to explore effective strategies to reduce dependence on grain corn imports to ensure the industry's sustainability and growth. 'In addition, the proposed amendment to the Protection of New Plant Varieties Act 2004 (Act 634) will be implemented to provide more comprehensive protection for new plant varieties.' Mohamad said policy planning would continue to be strengthened based on the findings of the 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report for the agricultural sector's growth. He said that as part of efforts to modernise the agricultural sector, the strategic cooperation between KPKM and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia will be enhanced with the introduction of the Remote Pilot Certificate of Competency – Agriculture Light syllabus for private unmanned aircraft systems.
