Bhubaneswar-bound Air India Express plane suffers bird hit at Pune airport, passengers accommodated on another flight
An Air India Express flight from Pune to Bhubaneswar suffered a bird hit at the Pune International Airport Wednesday, and the pilots aborted take-off. Santosh Dhoke, Director, Pune airport, confirmed the incident to The Indian Express. An Air India Express spokesperson said, 'One of our aircraft had a suspected bird strike before take-off from Pune. As a precaution, we accommodated guests in an alternative aircraft, arranged on priority. We regret the inconvenience.' Increased incidents of bird hits around the Pune airport have raised concerns about risks to flights. On June 20, a bird hit was detected on a Delhi-Pune flight after it landed. In June, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s Solid Waste Management Department appointed officers and special teams for round-the-clock garbage management around the city airport. Dhoke wrote to the Pune Municipal commissioner on June 18 about garbage dumping by unidentified people along the eastern and western perimeter walls of the airport. He also mentioned potentially unauthorised shops, godowns, garages, and scrap yards around the airport, contributing to garbage and other dangers. Dhoke told The Indian Express Thursday, 'The cleaning operations that PMC had begun in the previous month are going on continuously. PMC is picking up garbage from all four sides. The results will definitely show, it is an ongoing process and not a one-time thing. Bird activity increases in the Monsoon season.' In a separate incident, a Delhi-Pune Air India flight was delayed by 4 hours and 26 minutes on Tuesday due to maintenance issues. An Air India Spokesperson in a statement said, 'Flight AI2982 operating from Delhi to Pune on 5 August was delayed due to a maintenance task identified prior to departure requiring additional time for rectification'. 'Our ground colleagues in Delhi airport extended support to the passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused due to this unforeseen delay. Arrangements were made to fly the passengers to their destination, Pune, at the earliest. At Air India, the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remain top priority.' A passenger, Akhill Gupta, who was on the flight, posted about the delay on X. 'Boarded 1st flight at 12:30 hrs n landed now in Pune at 20:00 hrs. 2 hrs journey prolonged to 7:30 hrs. Air India Express plane suffers bird hit before take-off at Pune airport
Pune: Around 140 passengers of an Air India Express' Pune-Bhubaneswar flight (IX-1098) on Wednesday afternoon had a close shave as the aircraft aborted take-off because of a bird hit after it started rolling on the runway. Right after that, the pilot hit the brakes and the aircraft came to a screeching halt. The brakes were hit so hard that some passengers' cellphones were thrown off and a child almost fell from a woman's arms." He said the aircraft rolled on the runway for approximately 15-20 seconds before coming to a screeching halt. The runway length of the Pune airport is 2,535 metres (8,316 feet). Aviation experts told TOI that the average peak speed of aircraft like Airbus A320 before the take-off is 250-300 kmph. "The speed of the aircraft is always decided by the pilot. There are three kinds of speeds — V1 (decision speed), VR (rotation speed) and V2 (take-off safety speed). V1 is the maximum speed limit at which a pilot can safely abort take-off in case of an emergency. After the V1 limit, the take-off must be continued. The speed depends on factors like weather and load factor. The safety of the runway in Pune is the sole responsibility of the Indian Air Force," aviation expert Dhairyashil Vandekar said. Last month, a bird hit was detected on an Air India's Delhi-Pune plane after it landed at the city airport. In June, an Air India Express flight from Bhubaneswar had to abort landing and make a go-around after its pilot spotted a dog on the runway. "Thereafter, the pilot told flyers about the incident over the PA (public address) system. He said one of the engines suffered substantial damage and the aircraft wouldn't fly. After some time, the plane returned to the bay. We were disembarked and taken back to the terminal building," he said. TOI contacted the airline's spokesperson over the phone and sent him a WhatsApp message enquiring about the incident. But a reply was awaited till going to press. A source in the airport said the right engine of the aircraft, an Airbus A-320, suffered damage. In a video uploaded by Nadeem, the pilot could be heard stating that five blades of the engine suffered damage. The pilot also said a large bird was spotted on the runway and it hit the plane's engine. Nadeem said, "The airline said an alternative aircraft was being arranged for the flyers. I had a connecting flight to Delhi. Now, I will fly there directly from Pune around 1am on Thursday on another flight of the same airline."

Six aircraft engine shutdown incidents reported this year: Civil Aviation Ministry
NEW DELHI: A total of six aircraft engine shutdown incidents and three incidents of May Day calls have been reported so far this year, according to the civil aviation ministry. As per data shared by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol with the Rajya Sabha, there have been two incidents of engine shutdown, each involving IndiGo and SpiceJet, while Air India and Alliance Air had one such incident each. There have been three incidents of May Day Call, including for the Air India aircraft operating the London Gatwick-bound flight AI 171 that crashed into a building soon after take off from Ahmedabad on June 12. IndiGo and Air India Express also had one incident each of May Day Call. A pilot repeats May Day thrice to clearly communicate with the air traffic controller on the ground that the aircraft is in a life-threatening situation and needs urgent help.
