Nets' Cam Johnson still participating in 3-point contest this weekend

USA Today14-02-2025

NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson will be representing the franchise this weekend as he participates in the 2025 Starry 3-Point Contest on Saturday as part of All-Star Weekend. Johnson being in the competition will allow Brooklyn to be represented in San Francisco, but there looked to be a chance that he wouldn't be able to participate after turning his ankle in Wednesday's 100-96 over the Philadelphia 76ers.
"I'm going to be fine," Johnson said following Wednesday's win over the 76ers. Johnson played 32 minutes against Philadelphia and put up 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, but there was a moment in the game where he tweaked that right ankle that has caused him so much trouble over the past month, but he seemed to imply that he will be fine moving forward.
"I'm really excited for it," Johnson said when asked about his expectations for the three-point contest and All-Star Weekend in general. "I'll be shooting and praying. Prepare myself as best I can and go out there and shoot them and live with the result. I'm excited for it, I'm excited to spend a little bit of time at home and kind of recharge the batteries and get ready for these last 28 games."
Johnson has a tough task ahead of him as he will be up against a field of: New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland, Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro, Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield, Los Angeles Clippers guard Norman Powell, and Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard, who has won the past two three-point contests.
What Johnson has on his side is the fact that he is having a career-year as he is averaging 19.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game while shooting a career-high 48.8% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range. While Johnson is looking to have fun and make the most of the experience whether he wins the competition or not, he has been preparing to potentially win it all.
"Shoot 'em and pray," Johnson said when asked what his strategy is for the competition. On a serious note, Johnson will be looking to do something that hasn't been done since 2019 when then-Nets guard Joe Harris won the three-point contest for the first time in franchise history, something that most Brooklyn fans remember to this day because of how well Harris shot the ball for the Nets.

Michigan delivers another heartbreaking finish for Carson Hocevar

BROOKLYN, Mich. —While other drivers climbed from their cars after Sunday's 400-mile race at Michigan International Speedway, Carson Hocevar sat in his vehicle on pit road. When he finally emerged from his No. 77 Chevrolet, Hocevar walked around the car and briefly looked off to the distance toward Denny Hamlin's victory celebration. It was another gut punch for the 22-year-old Michigan native. Advertisement The caution Hocevar needed to stretch fuel to the end of the race never came and a flat tire forced him to pit from the lead 19 laps from the finish. The result was a 29th-place finish that most will forget but not Hocevar. 'It's just like (reliving) the Truck days,' Hocevar said on pit road. 'But you're doing it in front of a big stage. The difference is I felt like I was throwing them away. Now, they're getting taken away … things out of our control.' Consider: His engine blew while he ran second in the final stage of last month's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. At Texas last month, he pitted from sixth in the final stage. The caution came two laps later, putting him a lap down and forcing him to take a wave around to get back on the lead lap. If he had pitted a lap later, he likely would have been in a prime spot to win. Instead, he finished 24th. At Bristol in April, he was running third when his team had a 22-second pit stop, ending any chance at victory. Hocevar finished 11th. Sunday's pain was evident in Hocevar's downbeat voice on the radio after the race when he told the team in a soft voice: 'Good job everybody.' Crew chief Luke Lambert quickly added: 'Great work guys. I know that's heartbreaking. Great work. We're putting ourselves in position. We'll keep working. We'll get us there. We'll get us one soon.' Advertisement Lifting up the team becomes one of Lambert's key roles right now. 'It's hard on all of us,' Lambert said of the recent disappointments. When he figures out how to harness that, pick and choose the moments where he is aggressive, he's going to put it all together and just be the next whoever. Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.' Alonso's path toward becoming the Mets' career home run leader began when he set the major league record for rookies with 53 in 2019. He has hit at least 34 homers in each of his five full big league seasons and is on pace for 41 this year. 'Pete's been pretty incredible this year. He's been locked in every single at-bat,' said teammate Jeff McNeil, who also hit two home runs Sunday. 'Seems like big situations he's going to do some damage. 'It's fun to watch and I feel like he's putting on a show every time he's at the ballpark.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tearns ACL, will miss rest of 2025 WNBA season

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tearns ACL, will miss rest of 2025 WNBA season Show Caption Hide Caption Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith are back together again in Chicago USAT's Meghan Hall joins Sports Seriously's Mackenzie Salmon to talk about the duo in Chicago that is Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith. Sports Seriously The 2025 WNBA season hasn't been the best start for the Chicago Sky. And now, the team was dealt a major blow to a star. Guard Courtney Vandersloot suffered a torn right torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Saturday's loss to the Indiana Fever, the Sky announced. She will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season. The injury happened in the first quarter against Indiana in the first ever WNBA game at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls. Vandersloot was driving to the basket when she immediately went down and was in visible pain as she grabbed her right knee. Her teammates huddled around her, and she was eventually taken back to the locker room with the help of medical staff. She didn't return for the remainder of the contest. The Fever won the game 79-52. It's a brutal injury as the WNBA veteran was playing her first season back with the team that selected her No. 3 overall in the 2011 draft. Vandersloot spent the first 11 seasons with Chicago and was instrumental in the team capturing its first WNBA title in 2021. She signed with the New York Liberty in 2023 and spent two seasons with the team, helping the Liberty win their first championship last year. A five-time WNBA All-Star, Vandersloot is second in league history in assists with 2,887 career dimes, trailing Sue Bird's 3,234 assists. She also owns several franchise records in Chicago, including most games played, points, assists and steals, while ranking in the top five of several other categories. She re-signed with the team in February. "She's our engine," Sky coach Tyler Marsh said following the game against Indiana. "She's our captain and our leader out there, so obviously, it's a huge blow." Vandersloot averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and a team-high 5.3 assists per game in seven games played. Chicago is 2-5 on the season, standing in 11th place in the league as the team tries to get back to the postseason after missing it in 2024. "It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking to watch anybody, but especially one of our teammates and someone that means as much as Sloot does to this team and organization," Hailey Van Lith said postgame. "Whatever is in store in the future for this team, I trust we will find a way to make this moment mean something in the end." Contributing: Nancy Armour
