ATP men's tennis tour says its profit-sharing plan is adding $18 million in prizes for 2024

Yahoo7 hours ago
LONDON (AP) — An extra $18.3 million in prize money will be paid by the ATP men's tennis tour to players based on their performances at last year's nine Masters 1000 tournaments under a profit-sharing plan introduced in 2022.
The ATP said Thursday that amount is an increase from the $6.6 million profit-sharing bonus from Masters events in 2023.
By adding in the profit-sharing amount, overall compensation for ATP players in 2024 rises to a record $261 million, the ATP said.
The expanded Masters tour stops — with men and women playing at the same event, larger draws and lengthier tournament schedules — have drawn criticism from players for being too long.
The backdrop to all of this is demands from some athletes for more money and more say in the sport.
The Professional Tennis Players' Association, a group co-founded by Novak Djokovic, filed a class-action antitrust suit in March against the ATP, the WTA women's tour, the International Tennis Federation and the International Tennis Integrity Agency, calling them a 'cartel.'

Aussie six-hitter can't rescue Rockets in the Hundred

Power hitter Marcus Stoinis clobbered four big sixes for his Trent Rockets side but the Australian allrounder's pyrotechnics were too little, too late to help them conjure up a win over David Warner's London Spirit. Warner failed to fire after scoring 70no and 71 in his previous two knocks, falling for just five off six balls after the Spirit had been inserted at the Aussie veteran's new Lord's home on Thursday. But England star Jamie Smith (52) and New Zealand great, skipper Kane Williamson (45), dragged the home side back on track with a fine second-wicket partnership. Rockets are FIRING 🧨Lockie Ferguson gets the dangerous David Warner 🌟#TheHundred — The Hundred (@thehundred) August 14, 2025 And another Australian Ashton Turner, who's made useful contributions throughout the tournament, chipped in with 30 off just 18 balls, featuring five boundaries, before Stoinis (2-27 off his 20 balls) got him caught at cover. It helped the Spirit to a decent 5-162 off their 100 balls and though Rockets' opener Tom Banton looked in fine form again with his 46 off 31 balls, none of the other visiting batters ever looked comfortable at the iconic venue as even Joe Root struggled a bit for his 27 off 24. Anglo-Aussie Dan Worrall was effective as usual, grabbing a couple of key top-order wickets, leaving Stoinis already under pressure when he got to the wicket at 3-86 with 60 balls already eaten up. Starting too slowly to keep up with the required run rate, amassing just five off his first 10 balls, Stoinis did eventually explode into action, ending up with three sixes off his last seven balls in his 35no off 22 balls, but it was not enough to stop the Rockets limping to only 6-141 and falling to a 21-run defeat.

Report – Inter Milan Expecting Roma Response To €40M+ Offer For France Star Soon

Inter Milan are reportedly expecting a response from Roma soon to their offer of €40 million plus add-ons for midfielder Manu Kone. This via FCInterNews. The Giallorossi are currently evaluating the Nerazzurri's bid for the French international. Manu Kone has emerged as a surprise transfer opportunity for Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri reportedly see the France international as an ideal profile for the holding midfield position. Inter have no shortage of midfielders who can play in a more advanced role. However, midfielders like Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu are not as well-suited to playing in a double pivot. Therefore, Inter have identified Roma's Manu Kone as an ideal target. Plans for new football stadium approved

Oxford United's proposed new 16,000-seater stadium has been granted planning permission. Cherwell District Council's planning committee gave the green light to the purpose-built ground, to be built on land known as the Triangle, near Kidlington, after a four-hour meeting. Fans watched on in their football shirts during the meeting on Thursday evening, and some shouted "we got it" as the votes were counted. In total 14 councillors voted for the proposal, three abstained, and one voted against. The seven-hectare (17-acre) site will be located south of Kidlington roundabout, west of Banbury Road, east of Frieze Way and near Oxford Parkway Station. The application will now be referred to the Secretary of State, because it goes against the district council's development plan and is on the green belt. Discussing the plans, councillors raised concerns about transport, finances and the environmental impact of the new ground. Adrian Sutton, from the Friends of Stratfield Brake, said during the meeting his group objected on "three critical grounds: greenbelt policy, public safety and ecological harm". He said: "The need to relocate is unproven, public safety has not been considered and the application does not take the precautionary approach required by Natural England." However, summing up before the vote, councillor Dr Kerrie Thornhill called it "a tremendously exciting project". "It's huge in its potential for bringing community benefits to Oxfordshire as a whole - and to Kidlington itself," she said. But Green Party councillor Ian Middleton said he was "disappointed" by the outcome, and believed it would have a "devastating" impact on the community. "We always said we wouldn't support building on green belt unless there was local support," he said. Among those who spoke at the meeting was club steward Roland Clements, known as Roly, who was concerned about the future of the club if it did not get the stadium. He said: "I've watched generations walk through those gates... It's where families grow together." He told the meeting that the club helps fans to "feel part of something" and he pleaded for the council to "think about the people". After the meeting Jonathon Clarke, development director at Oxford United, said he was "absolutely delighted". "We're now one step closer to delivering on our goal of creating a once-in-a-generation venue for supporters and the wider community," he said. 'Huge relief' Oxford City Council leader Susan Brown said she welcomed news with "with huge relief". She said: "This decision has provided a clear pathway to the construction of a modern facility that Oxford United and its fans deserve. "It secures the future of the club and will offer a host of economic and social benefits for the area." The club currently plays at the Kassam Stadium and its owner, Firoka Group, has agreed the U's can play there for two more seasons. There will now be an option to extend the deal for another year, which was conditional on planning permission for the club's proposed new stadium being granted. The council received about 4,900 responses from the public about the application and its planning report contained details of objections from local campaigners. The U's new complex is expected to include a 180-bed hotel, restaurant, conference centre and community plaza. There were concerns that the proposed stadium would be built near ancient woodland but Natural England concluded that would not be the case.
