Finally somebody hits five
And it's Harris English who breaks clear of that -4 mark to take the solo lead at the Open Championship. After his long-range birdie on 11, he backs it up with four at the 12th. That's the seventh birdie of a round that has featured just two pars. If you want fireworks and to stay away from the Rory madness, hold on for the group behind.
Meanwhile, Christian Bezuidenhout pars his way in from the 12th to join the clubhouse lead at -4. A near miss on the 18th green merited a frustrated putter flip.

"Go on, go on... OH!"
There's the par McIlroy needed!
It was almost a birdie, an outstanding chip from the hollow behind the green rolling towards the hole and finishing just short of the pin, with the crowd thinking it might drop.
Stops the rot, stays at -1 thru 13. Thomas and Fleetwood also secure pars.

That bogey of Rory's...
He's the first person to drop a shot at the 12th since Daniel Berger a few hours ago. 24 players had passed in between and successfully managed par or better. Sigh.

McIlroy misery
Off the clubface he hates his tee shot on the par-three 13th and for good reason as it pitches just beyond the flag and rolls off the back left of the green, where Tommy Fleetwood finds himself too.
Justin Thomas has hit a good one to about 12 feet for birdie but this is all about McIlroy - he needs a par to stop the rot.
The cries of "Grand Slam baby!" as he walks to the green likely aren't helping either.

Super six becomes fantastic five
Lucas Glover is back out of a tie for the lead after a bogey at 11. The old wayward tee shot + failure to get up and down from off the green combo.

Bogey
That's a really painful one for Rory. Really painful. He stood on the 11th tee one back of the lead and back to back bogeys, including a three-putt one on a par-five, is a real momentum killer. Back to -1.
The crowd feel it too. There was a deflated feeling all round when that missed.

Welcome to cut-watch with Bryson
A disaster at the 13th. Hacked out. Poor chip. Missed put. Five. Double.
He's not +5 and in a tie for 132nd.

Work to do
Rory's monster putt had the line but not the length and he's left himself a seven footer for par to avoid a really painful bogey on not just a par five but the easiest hole on the course. That would be a real momentum killer.
Even worse for Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood as both of their putts loop invitingly towards the hole but halt just a few rolls short of a birdie.

You don't have to be a lip-reader...
Rory's tee shot on the par five 12th ends up in the bunker, where Tommy Fleetwood joins him. Rory pitches out to follow the three-shot route that has paid dividends for him on par fives today. But wherever it ended up, his one-word summary towards the camera was unmistakeable.
Ah it rolled down the slope into the semi-rough, making the 137-yard approach more difficult than it should be. And it duly ends up a full 73 feet away from the hole. A two-putt will do from there.

It's not getting any better for Bryson
He's still +3 but he's just blasted his tee shot at the par three 13th into the long stuff.

Everyone after Rory
Around the 12th green, even though Åberg, Hovland and Spieth are putting, the whispers and phones are all about where Rory has hit his drive in the group behind.
The answer is into the furthest fairway bunker, which is 310 off the tee. That's going to be a lay up on this par five.

Do you recognise this face?
This is Bo Martin, who was on Shane's bag in 2019. He's with Min Woo Lee this year, who is level par through 13.

Inches from another new leader
Seriously, by the end of the day we could have about ten guys atop this leaderboard. Tyrrell Hatton almost becomes the latest to reach -4 as he hits the 12th green in two and just runs his putt an inch to the right of the hole, but it's a tap-in birdie and he returns to -3 after having bogeyed the 11th. Not a bad bounceback all things considered.

Rory's magic may save par
It was a pitch up the middle from that thick lie in the rough and his third-shot approach is superb - from 85 yards to eight feet to save par.
If he gets that home, he goes on to the par five 12th knowing a birdie with tie the lead at The Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

'I enjoy playing it': Rickie Fowler, who opened with a two-under 69
His round:"Good day other than a couple swings, missed a couple short ones. Other than that, a good solid start. I think that's really all you can ask for on Thursday."
Royal Portrush:"Yeah, I enjoy playing it. I've had success on it back in 2019. It's a tricky golf course, depending on where the wind's at and what kind of weather we have. You have to think your way around it and execute, but also know when you can maybe play on the aggressive side or when you need to kind of play conservative or just stay smart and take what the course gives you."

The politics of the 11th tee shot
Rory's tee shot at 11 doesn't go to plan as it thuds into the thick stuff. Didn't look like it moved once it whacked in there. Left. Obviously. He's been more left than Jeremy Corbyn today.
Fleetwood's scuttles just to the right of that (but not quite centrist) and into the semi, while JT loops a conservative fade down the centre-right side and just off the fairway.

Quite right, too
Nothing as annoying as when the tour pros hit into the stands and drop it just off the green. The R&A did explain earlier this week that the reason for these is so that there's no risk of guys bailing out into stands on purpose.

the Open seems to be dialing up its nastiest set of drop zones yet. ohh you want a free drop from the grandstand? for sure man. toss one down in the bushes over there pic.twitter.com/nRaK8RRS0X— Dylan Dethier (@dylan_dethier) July 16, 2025

Irish Champion jockey hit with 14-day ban for alleged non-trier offence
Ireland's Champion conditional jump jockey Tiernan Power Roche has been hit with a hefty ban following a race at Ballinrobe on Tuesday evening. The Wexford born rider was suspended for 14-days by the raceday stewards for his ride on Coolboy Christie in the opening O´Hare´s Bar Maiden Hurdle at the Mayo venue. The stewards deemed him in breach of Rule 212, which relates to non-triers, for his effort on the Philip Rothwell-trained four-year-old who finished eighth of 13 in the race. They also suspended the horse, owned by the Geesala Racing Group Syndicate, from racing for 60 days while trainer Rothwell, who was absent, escaped any punishment. 27-year-old Power Roche was crowned champion conditional last season and is one of the brightest prospects on the Irish jumping racing scene with 40 career winners to his name. Coolboy Christie was a 40-1 chance and made late headway having been held up at the rear of the field for most of the race. Power Roche told the stewards he was following his trainer's instructions as the horse had previously raced keenly but having interviewed connections the stewards took action and hit him with a 14-day ban. The suspension could now see Power Roche miss out on the Galway Festival, which takes place next week from Monday July 28 to Sunday August 3rd. Following the race an IHRB Veterinary check reported the animal to be clinically abnormal post-race with samples taken for further analysis. The stewards' report into the race was published on the IHRB website following racing and read: 'The Raceday Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Coolboy Christy, ridden by T. Power Roche, and trained by P.J. Rothwell. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and Mr David Nolan the trainer's Authorised Representative. 'T. Power Roche, stated that he received his instructions via telephone prior to racing from P.J. Rothwell, these were to drop in last and to settle his mount who has previously ran keen. 'He further stated that his mount made a few jumping errors but that he was happy with the ride in that he had improved from his previous runs and ran to the best of his abilities today. 'Mr David Nolan confirmed the instructions given and stated that following the race P.J. Rothwell advised him via telephone that the rider could have been seen to make more of an effort in the closing stages. 'The Raceday Stewards also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer who reported the animal to be clinically abnormal post-race. Samples were taken for further analysis. 'Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards were satisfied that T. Power Roche was in breach of Rule 212A.(ii)(in that the rider was not seen to have attempted to obtain from his mount timely, real and substantial efforts to achieve the best possible place) and having considered his clean record in this regard they suspended him for 14 racedays and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. 'Furthermore, the Raceday Stewards under the provisions of Rule 212A(d) suspended Coolboy Christy for 60 days. In arriving at their decision, the Raceday Stewards acknowledged the IHRB Veterinary report, however they were still satisfied that a breach of Rule 212A.(ii) had occurred.'

Inside the five-star luxury hotel where Rory McIlroy stayed during The Open
This is the five-star hotel that Rory McIlroy and his family stayed in during this year's Open Championship at Royal Portrush. McIlroy grew up in Holywood, a town outside of Belfast, which is about an hour away from the famous Dunluce Links. But the five-time major champion decided to stay close to the course for this year's Open Championship - and he could not have gotten any closer than the Dunluce Lodge. Overlooking the fourth fairway of Royal Portrush, Dunluce Lodge was officially opened this year, just in time for the 153rd Open Championship. (Image: Instagram: Dunluce Lodge) (Image: Instagram: Dunluce Lodge) Owned by a US-based investment group, the five-star hotel has 35 suites, a state-of-the-art spa, and its own onsite nine-hole putting green, among its many amenities. Rooms at the plush hotel are typically available €400 to €1,100 per night, depending on room type and demand, and they also offer a private lodge with eight suites, where McIlroy and his family are thought to have stayed. Built at a cost of over €17 million, the new hotel aims to capitalise on a surge in golf tourism in the area following the Open Championship. Posting a photo on social media of McIlroy along with hotel staff, Dunluce Lodge said: "What an unforgettable week. It was an incredible honour to host Rory McIlroy and his family at Dunluce Lodge during The Open. (Image: Instagram: Dunluce Lodge) (Image: Instagram: Dunluce Lodge) "Welcoming one of golf's all-time greats, just steps from Royal Portrush Golf Club was truly special for our entire team. "Thank you, Rory, for choosing to stay with us. We hope it felt like home." McIlroy enjoyed a hero's welcome at Royal Portrush as huge crowds followed him around the course all week. The Holywood man threatened to get his hands on the Claret Jug once again, but he and the rest of the field ultimately had no answer to Scottie Scheffler, who dominated the major championship from start to finish. McIlroy said after the championship: "It's been an awesome week. I've gotten everything I wanted out of this week apart from a Claret Jug, and that's just because one person was just a little bit better than the rest of us. "It's been an amazing week. I feel so thankful and just so lucky that I get to do this, I get to do this in front of this crowd. "Hopefully I'll have one or two Opens left here, if the R&A decide to keep coming back, probably one while I'm still competitive and another one while I'm more grey than I already am. "It's just been incredible to come back here and to play and at least feel like I had a chance today going out there. Just an awesome week."
