Mets win series opener against Dodgers, 4-3, in 10 innings

Yahoo2 days ago

The Mets won their fourth straight by taking the opener of their four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3, in 10 innings.
Here are the takeaways...
-For the sixth time already this season, Francisco Lindor gave New York an instant 1-0 lead after leading off the game with a home run against Dustin May. The solo shot was Lindor's team-leading 14th of the season and his second in as many days as his hot stretch continues.

With that home run, the shortstop is just one leadoff bomb away from tying the Mets' franchise record for leadoff home runs in a season set by Curtis Granderson in 2015 and matched in 2016. At this pace, that record will be Lindor's at the end of the month. The most leadoff home runs he's hit in a season is nine in 2018 with the then-Cleveland Indians.
Lindor is also now tied for fourth place in franchise history with eight leadoff home runs as a Met, matching Tommie Agee and Lenny Dykstra.
-For a while, Lindor's home run was the only run in the game as May and Paul Blackburn were each pitching well. It wasn't until the fifth inning when New York scored again.
After back-to-back singles with one out from Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez, Lindor popped out to bring up Brandon Nimmo who hit a ground-rule double to the right-center field gap that scored McNeil and doubled the Mets' lead. Unfortunately, because the ball bounced into the stands, Alvarez could only advance to third even though he would've scored easily had the ball stayed in play.

The Dodgers would intentionally walk Juan Soto to load the bases for Pete Alonso and get the right-on-right matchup which worked after Alonso ended the inning with a flyout.
-As for Blackburn, the right-hander couldn't have asked for a better season debut. Tasked with the tough assignment of pitching against Los Angeles' potent lineup, Blackburn turned in five scoreless innings after allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three on 77 pitches (49 strikes).
The 31-year-old was never in a ton of danger, only allowing a runner beyond first base twice. With runners on first and second in his final inning, Blackburn retired Shohei Ohtani on a ground ball to keep the Mets in front. Blackburn bested Ohtani in all three plate appearances, striking out the DH in his other two at-bats.
-Ohtani would get his revenge in the seventh inning, homering off Max Kranick to get the Dodgers on the board and cut New York's lead to 2-1.

-That score stood until the ninth inning with Ohtani once again up at the plate, this time with runners on first and third and one out against Edwin Diaz. Needing a strikeout, Diaz got Ohtani to fly out to left field which scored the tying run for the closer's first blown save of the season.
Still not out of the inning, Diaz struck out Teoscar Hernandez for the final out of the inning and sent the game to extra innings.
-In familiar territory after both teams went to extras in the series opener at Citi Field last week in a game that ended up going 13 innings, the Mets wasted no time re-taking the lead in the top of the 10th inning against Tanner Scott who they have had success against. Alvarez started things off with a double which scored the free-runner at second base and Lindor singled in another run to give New York a two-run lead.
-Up 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning and four of his relievers already used, manager Carlos Mendoza turned to Jose Castillo to close things out. But the lefty created a mess by walking Freddie Freeman to start before allowing an RBI single to Andy Pages. Castillo struck out Max Muncy for the first out of the inning before getting pulled for Jose Buttó.

Buttó entered with the tying and winning runs on first and second and got Will Smith to flyout for the second out of the inning. Facing NLCS MVP Tommy Edman, Buttó got a hot shot back up the middle and snagged it before throwing to first base for the final out of the game.
Game MVP: The Franciscos
Lindor and Alvarez both deserve the shine tonight after combining for four hits and three RBI.

‘Ballerina' Reviews: Are Critics In Step With ‘John Wick' Spinoff?

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina — starring Ana de Arma and featuring Keanu Reeves — has some, but not all, critics jumping for joy. Rated R, Ballerina plays in Thursday previews and opens in 3,400 North American theaters on Friday. The logline for Ballerina reads, 'Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.' Directed by Len Wiseman, Ballerina also stars features John Wick franchise stars Reeves, Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick in supporting roles. Ballerina also stars Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus. The review embargo for Ballerina lifted Wednesday afternoon and the film is getting a mostly positive reception from Rotten Tomatoes critics with a 75% rating based on 55 reviews as of the publication of this article. The rating, of course, could change as more reviews roll in the throughout the week and over the weekend. The RT Critics Consensus and Popcornmeter rating are still pending. David Ehrlich of IndieWire is among the top critics on RT who gives From the World of John Wick: Ballerina a 'fresh' review, writing, 'The good news is that Ballerina has another place it wants to show us, and that place turns out to be a wonderful addition to this franchise's ever-swelling cinematic universe.' David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also thinks Ballerina takes a step in the right direction, noting in his review summary on RT, "[Ana] de Armas is a magnetic presence with all the right moves, and [Len] Wiseman's muscular direction make for mindless summer action entertainment with a lot of style." Also praising Ballerina is Gregory Nussen of Deadline Hollywood Daily, who writes in his RT summary, '[Ana] de Armas is a huge reason why this all works; her presence is beguiling, and her movement is immaculate. So, too, is Jason Ballantine's editing job.' Among Ballerina's detractors on RT is Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence, who writes in her 'rotten' review, "As a vehicle to add more lore and nuance to the JWCU — while also delivering numerous fun action sequences — Ballerina functions well. Unfortunately, it fails to give its star a real character to play, or a substantial plotline." Tim Grierson of Screen International is another top critic on RT who gives Ballerina a 'rotten' review, writing, 'Ballerina isn't sharp enough to deserve [Ana] de Armas's killer performance.' From the World of John Wick: Ballerina — plays in Thursday previews and opens in wide release in theaters on Friday.

New Jersey's Stockton University prepares to host soccer players ahead of FIFA Club World Cup

This New Jersey university is preparing to host a Brazilian soccer team ahead of FIFA Club World Cup This New Jersey university is preparing to host a Brazilian soccer team ahead of FIFA Club World Cup This New Jersey university is preparing to host a Brazilian soccer team ahead of FIFA Club World Cup Some of the best soccer players in the world will soon arrive in New Jersey. Lincoln Financial Field will host matches for the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in Philadelphia, but Stockton University has also been selected as a training site. Focusing on straight lines and overlapping passes, the grounds team at the school in Galloway Township is mowing the soccer field with precision. Crews are working around the clock after FIFA announced CR Flamengo from Brazil will be the team spending roughly two weeks training in South Jersey. "CR Flamengo is one of the most popular teams in the world with over 57 million followers," said Jeff Haines, the associate director of athletics and recreation at Stockton. "The university realizes how big of a deal this is, not just from a local soccer standpoint, but a global standpoint that puts Stockton on the map." Fresh lines were painted on the soccer field on Tuesday, and FIFA shipped new goals ahead of the practice sessions. The university's athletic director, Tony Berich, said representatives from Brazil visited the campus in December, and one of the selling points was the Bermuda grass inside G. Larry James Stadium. "I don't know if we would have this opportunity if we didn't have this field, I don't think we would have even been considered," Berich said. Stockton's field was grown at Tuckahoe Turf Farms in Hammonton, the same farm working with FIFA and Lincoln Financial Field, so it will be a smooth transition for CR Flamengo. Tuckahoe Turf Farms CBS News Philadelphia All of the practices on Stockton's campus will be closed to the public. The university installed temporary fencing around the stadium to keep the players and the field more secure. "We do have experience in hosting big events and soccer teams, this is another big exciting event that we're really looking forward to," Haines said. In 1994, Stockton hosted Saudi Arabia's team ahead of the World Cup. "We were also fortunate enough to host Nigeria in 1996 for their Olympic training camp as well. Nigeria went on to win the gold medal," Haines said. Now, Stockton is preparing for CR Flamengo's arrival on June 12, and the team will train in Galloway Township through June 23. Officials say the field and facilities will be ready. "This is the one chance that we have to be associated with … a worldwide event like this," Berich said.
