Alex Eastwood: 'Our son's kickboxing death must lead to change'

BBC News13-06-2025
Moments before 15-year-old Alex Eastwood headed down to the ring to compete in a charity kickboxing match, his father gave him a kiss and told him he loved him.Stephen Eastwood, 40, never imagined this would be the last conversation he had with his son.The champion kickboxer collapsed after the third and final bout of the match and died three days later in hospital. After it came to light that he had been competing in an unsanctioned family, his family launched a campaign for change in his memory.
During his inquest at Bolton Coroner's Court, Michael Pemberton, assistant coroner for Manchester West, concluded Alex died through misadventure. He said neither Alex, nor his parents, appreciated the dangers of the "chaotic and somewhat disjointed" approach to children involved in combat sports. He described the planning and lack of risk assessment before the fatal bout as "sub-optimal".Alex fell in love with kickboxing after he started training at Hurricane Combat and Fitness in Liverpool at the age of nine and had a "meteoric" rise in the sport, his inquest heard. The teenager, from Fazakerley, Liverpool, who had just finished his GCSEs, had agreed to take part in the charity fundraiser fight at TKMA Gym in Platt Bridge, Wigan, on 29 June 2024 .The bout was to be the "main event", but it was an unsanctioned match, the inquest heard. Tragedy struck when Alex collapsed after the third and final two-minute round of the "light contact" kickboxing match against a 17-year-old opponent. Mr Eastwood told the inquest he "shouted that his son's head guard had come loose" in the second round, which was rectified. He said he noticed his son's movements had become "slower" and he was "holding the rope" in the third round.
Speaking to BBC North West Tonight, Mr Eastwood said: "I looked at Nikita [Alex's step-mother] and across the room and shook my head as if to say 'what have we just witnessed?'"He recalled how his son, who trained five times a week, appeared "sluggish and wasn't himself" before he "started throwing punches into thin air".His father said no-one seemed to react to what was unfolding in front of their eyes as he remembered rushing to his son's side to put him in a recovery position. "I just thought 'why is no-one else reacting to this? Am I seeing this straight? This isn't normal'," said Mrs Eastwood.
Alex was taken to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan where doctors confirmed he had catastrophic brain damage and bleeding. He was transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital for surgery but he died on 2 July 2024 with his father at his bedside. "From that point on there've just been questions of what, why, and trying to move forward with some sort of life, which is very difficult at the moment," his father said.During a pre-inquest hearing into his death, Mr Pemberton took the unusual step of filing a Prevention of Future Death report as he said he was concerned there was no regulatory guidance for any child combat sports.
"To be told as parents that children are fighting in unregulated and unsanctioned fights and we don't know – it's shocking," said Mr Eastwood."We put him in a sport to help him, make him better in life and I'll never see him again now because of that sport."Alex's family said the government needed to step in to regulate the sport to make it safer for children, adding there needed to be clear, enforceable, national protections for children's combat sports."It's a great sport for people – but as long as everyone comes home safe," said Mr Eastwood."It's not at the moment, because Alex hasn't come home safe."Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: "Whilst the government does not, and should not, directly regulate sport, it is clear lessons must be learned."She said her department was "exploring ways to improve the safety and welfare of children in martial arts".Additional reporting by PA Media.

Arsenal v Leeds United

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 14 meetings with Leeds in all competitions (W12 D2), winning each of the last six in a row. Leeds have lost 10 of their last 12 Premier League away games against Arsenal (W2), while they've not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 14 at the Gunners. Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 42 Premier League home games against promoted sides (W37 D5), since a 1-0 loss to Newcastle in November 2010. Avoiding defeat here would see them equal the competition's longest run without a home defeat against promoted teams – 43 by Chelsea between 2001 and 2015. Leeds have lost 23 of their last 30 away league matches in London (W4 D3), while in the Premier League they've lost their last seven in a row since a 2-1 win at Brentford on the final day of 2021-22. Arsenal's winner against Manchester United was via a header from Riccardo Calafiori from a corner, their 31st Premier League corner goal since 2023-24 – 11 more than any other side. Their xG from set plays was more than any other side on MD1 (1.02) but their open play xG was the third lowest (0.28), ahead only of Aston Villa and Everton. Leeds started their 2025-26 Premier League campaign with victory over Everton on Monday night. The Whites are looking to win their opening two Premier League games in a season for the first time since 2002-03 under Terry Venables. Daniel Farke has won each of his last two Premier League matches (Brentford 1-2 Norwich in November 2021, Leeds 1-0 Everton on Monday), the first time he's ever won consecutive games in the competition. Of current managers, only Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola are on longer current winning runs (3 each). Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has faced Leeds more often without losing than any other side as Gunners boss in all competitions (P8 W7 D1), winning all five at the Emirates against the Whites. Viktor Gyökeres failed to attempt a single shot on his Premier League debut for Arsenal; the first time since the start of 2023-24 he hasn't had one in a top-flight league match. He was, however, directly involved in 14 goals in 12 appearances against newly promoted sides in the Portuguese Primeira Liga for Sporting (9 goals, 5 assists).

Brentford v Aston Villa

Brentford are winless in their last six league games against Aston Villa (D2 L4), and haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their eight Premier League meetings with the Villans. Aston Villa have won their last two away league games against Brentford, having lost four of their previous five visits beforehand (D1). Brentford have never lost their first home top-flight match in any of their nine seasons at this level of English football (W7 D2), scoring at least two goals in every match. Aston Villa have gone two Premier League games without a goal (D1 L1) for just the second time under Unai Emery. They haven't gone three without scoring in the division since July 2020 under Dean Smith. There were 75 goals scored at the Gtech Community Stadium in the Premier League in 2024-25, the most of any venue. Brentford both scored and conceded two or more goals in eight different home matches, the most by a team in a Premier League season since Wigan in 2012-13. The first goal conceded of Keith Andrews' reign at Brentford was via a Nottingham Forest corner, with the Bees conceding just three corner goals in the entirety of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign when Andrews was set-piece coach. The Bees haven't conceded from a corner in consecutive league games since December 2023, one of which was against Aston Villa. Aston Villa mustered just three shots in their MD1 0-0 draw with Newcastle United, their fewest in a Premier League match since May 2024 (2 vs Brighton). Across MD1, Villa ranked 20th for shots and expected goals (0.20) of all Premier League sides. Aston Villa have picked up a red card in three of their last four Premier League games, only one fewer than in their first 98 under Unai Emery (4). They've had a red in each of their last two, never previously seeing a player sent off in three games in a row in the competition. Igor Thiago scored his first Premier League goal for Brentford in their 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on MD1. Three players have scored in the Bees' first and second games of a Premier League season – Josh Dasilva in 2022-23, and both Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in 2023-24.

AFC Bournemouth v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Bournemouth have won three of their last five Premier League games against Wolves (L2), though all three victories have come at Molineux. Wolves have never lost in five Premier League away games against Bournemouth (W3 D2), making the Cherries the side they've faced most often on the road without defeat in the competition. Bournemouth lost their first Premier League home game in each of their first three seasons in the competition between 2015-16 and 2017-18, but they haven't lost their opening home game in any of their last five top-flight seasons (W2 D3). Justin Kluivert scored a hat-trick of penalties for Bournemouth in their 4-2 win over Wolves last season, with 25% of the goals scored in Premier League games between the teams coming from the spot (5/20), the highest ratio of any fixture with 15 or more goals. In March and April, Wolves won six consecutive Premier League games, scoring 13 goals and conceding just four. In their five games since then, they've lost four (D1), scoring just three goals and shipping 12, picking up fewer points than any other ever-present side since the start of May (1). Bournemouth have won three of their last 14 Premier League matches (D4 L7), including losing three of their last four (W1). The Cherries haven't lost their opening two league games of a season since 2017-18. Wolves have won just one of their last 22 Premier League matches in August (D10 L11), a 1-0 away win at Everton in 2023. Their overall August win ratio in the competition is just 14% (5 wins in 35 games), the lowest of any side to play 30+ games in this month. Only Sunderland (396) applied more high-intensity pressures on MD1 of this season's Premier League than Bournemouth (394), with striker Evanilson applying the joint-most high-intensity pressures in the opponent's half of any player (43). João Gomes made four tackles and conceded three fouls on MD1 against Man City, both the joint-most by any Wolves player in the match. Since Gomes' Premier League debut on 11 February 2023, he leads the way for both tackles (277) and fouls conceded (156) across the entire division.
