BIS training for TNUHDB engineers gets under way

A two-day capacity building programme, organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Coimbatore Branch, for engineers of the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) got under way in the city on July 29. This initiative is part of BIS's ongoing efforts to promote the implementation of Indian Standards across State government departments, with special focus on urban planning, construction, water systems, and sanitation. The programme aims at strengthening understanding of national standards and encourage their practical application for safe, sustainable, and high-quality infrastructure. Balamurugan, Superintendent Engineer, TNUHDB, inaugurated the programme. It was attended by 28 assistant engineers, assistant executive engineers, and junior engineers, according to a BIS release.

Thirty-two Assistant Commandants of the 80th batch of Indian Coast Guard officers successfully passed out from the Indian Coast Guard Training Centre, Kochi (CGTC(K)), on Tuesday (July 29). The day marked the completion of their Coast Guard Law and Operations course. A passing-out parade (POP) was held at the Indian Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 4, Kochi, and was reviewed by Inspector General Datwinder Singh Saini, TM, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East), according to a release. The officers received comprehensive instructions in Indian Coast Guard-specific subjects during the 11-week training programme. The curriculum covered Maritime Law, Search and Rescue Operations, Fisheries Monitoring and Control, Marine Pollution Prevention, and various other aspects central to the ICG Charter of Duties. Assistant Commandant B.G.V.S. Jagan was awarded Best in Academics for securing the highest marks in the course. The prestigious Director General's Sword of Honour (for the 79th Batch) was awarded to Assistant Commandant Yatesh Rawat for achieving the first position in the overall order of merit, it said.

Eluru District Collector K. Vetri Selvi directed officials to expedite the land acquisition process for the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) works of the Polavaram project. At a review meeting held here on Tuesday, the Collector said that an additional 5,000 acres of land is required in Eluru district for the implementation of the R&R package, which includes land-for-land compensation, construction of R&R colonies, and other facilities for project-displaced families. As much as 800 acres have already been identified in Buttayagudem and Jeelugumilli mandals, she said, and instructed that the remaining 4,200 acres be acquired at a pace of 500 acres per week, which should be completed by August 15. Ms. Vetri Selvi emphasised that only non-tribal lands should be identified for acquisition, and there should be no encroachments by tribals or others. Once the lands are identified, grama sabhas (village meetings) must be conducted in the respective villages. The Collector instructed that RDOs and DSPs should engage with farmers and ensure village-level consultations in their presence. Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy, Special Collector S. Sarala Vandana, Alluri Sitarama Raju District Chinturu ITDA Project Officer Apoorva Bharat, District Revenue Officer V. Vishweshwara Rao, and others were present.
