REVIEW: The Best of Bond, Lighthouse, Poole

Yahoo18-05-2025

Music is nothing if not about emotion, emotional responses and experience.
That's as true of the enduring phenomenon of the James Bond soundtracks and theme songs as of anything else, perhaps even more so because what they evoke and represent is so multi layered and complex.
I imagine all those at the sell out performance of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's Best of Bond might have felt much the same.
The iconic pieces of music from the likes of Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Louis Armstong, Matt Monroe, Shirley Bassey, Adele, Carly Simon, Tina Turner, Billie Eilish and Gladys Knight and more, take us not only to a particular film or films, but also to our own life and times, experiences, memories and emotions.
A spectacular evening spanning seven decades (with the understated but hugely entertaining maestro, David Arnold at the podium) began of course with the ubiquitous 'James Bond Theme' composed by Monty Norman for the very first film in 1962, Dr No.
Throughout, West End soloist Jacinta Whyte with her raw vocal power did a superb job in the challenging role of being everyone from Bassey (Goldfinger) to Adele (Skyfall), Garbage (The World is Not Enough), Knight (Licence to Kill) and even Sam Smith (The Writing's on the Wall from Spectre).
She was also Dusty Springfield with The Look of Love from the 1967 parody Casino Royale, joking: 'The old ones are the best.'
Listening to pieces without the vocals allows more opportunity to appreciate just how beautiful and intricate they actually are, particularly You Only Live Twice, From Russia with Love, We Have All the Time in the World and the underrated Moonraker.
There was plenty of the all action drama, from Thunderball to The Living Daylights and The Man with the Golden Gun.
The legend John Barry's evocative chase scene score from 'Russia' also made an appearance.
Barry would go on to compose the soundtracks to eleven Bond films.
After a piece from the score of The Spy Who Loved Me by the American composer Marvin Hamlisch, Arnold suggested it could stand comparison with the likes Shostakovich and told the audience: 'It is really is that good and people dismiss film music is trite and not being artistic enough. Well I think Hamlisch shows that's not the case.'
Such an incredibly diverse set of songs and themes gave every musician in every section a chance to play their part. The soaring brass, haunting woodwind, stunning strings and big, dramatic percussion.
The Best of Bond was also the best of the world-class BSO.
Nobody Does it Better? Undoubtedly. Licence to Thrill. You bet.

This JBL PartyBox Club 120 Speaker Is Cheaper Than Last Prime Day, No Need to Wait for Upcoming Sales

We can all agree that Summer is here, right? Sure, it might not be the kind of Summer we're all excited about, but the season of long days, BBQs, and big old get-togethers is upon us. It's just nice to get outdoors and spend time with friends and family, and one key part of all of these things is music. That's where this JBL PartyBox Club 120 portable party speaker comes in, and it's currently $100 off on Amazon. This thing is an excellent way to boost the vibes at any party, no matter where you are or who you're with. Music is the way to set basically any mood, and this speaker is one of the easiest ways to do that indoors, outdoors, or if you're in a secret third space. See at Amazon Get That Music Pumping The most obvious thing to note here is the sound itself. The speaker packs in 5.25-inch woofers and 2.25-inch tweeters to allow it to output excellent sound with a decent range and a good mix of highs and lows. You'll be able to pump the bass as needed, but also enjoy more chilled-out music, if that's what you're after. It helps better the general atmosphere with a visual display too, and can manage a few different lighting effects, all of which can sync to the music it's playing, which helps really cement the immersion. It's portable too, which is great because it means you can carry it around using the foldaway handle, and then just plonk it down wherever you feel like. The battery life is pretty spectacular as well, as it can last up to 12 hours on a single charge, and if you're in a rush, a 10-minute fast charge can still get you an extra 80 minutes of playback. That's great for those who often forget to prepare for things ahead of time. It's splash proof too, with an IPX4 rating, which means that a little bit of rain, a little bit of tide, or a little bit of pool party won't ruin your fun. The cherry on top is that it has dual mic and guitar inputs, which means that if you or your friends are really talented, or in a state where you're feeling like you are, you can hook into this thing and sing or play along. The speaker can't make you sound better, but you'll probably have fun with it all, so who cares? Plus, with it being $100 off, and only $300 as a result, it's a great investment for your good times. 11 essential Brian Wilson songs, from surf rock to ‘Pet Sounds'

If you enjoy most any kind of pop music, you're a cork in Brian Wilson's ocean. The principal songwriter and sonic architect of the Beach Boys, he bottled the vibes of Southern California — and really, the American optimism of the early 1960s — in dozens of hits (many of which contain the word 'surf') before creating what is by broad consensus one of the great rock records of his or any era, 'Pet Sounds.' No one needs an introduction to this catalogue; it remains encoded in music's DNA. But we have some favorites. Don't you?

BTS Almost Charts A New No. 1 Song In America

BTS is inching closer and closer to a proper reunion, which may result in new music arriving as early as late summer, or perhaps this fall. Two of the seven members of the group, RM and V, were discharged from the South Korean military this week, after completing their tour of duty, which is required of all men by a certain age in the nation. While the group is not fully formed just yet – but all seven singers will likely be finished with thor service soon – fans of BTS recently turned their attention to a years-old cut and almost turned it into a No. 1 hit in America this week. The boy band returns to the tally as "00:00 (Zero O'Clock)" reenters the list at No. 2, missing out on ruling by just one space. That position marks a new high point for the cut, which reaches its peak seven frames into its time on the tally — but years after it was initially shared on the septet's 2020 album Map of the Soul: 7. BTS is beaten to the summit on the World Digital Song Sales ranking by "Shake It to the Max (Fly)," which has become a global smash. The tune is credited to four artists – Moliy, Silent Addy, Skillibeng and Shenseea – and it has now spent three of its 12 frames on this tally running the show. While BTS doesn't manage to score a new champion on the World Digital Song Sales chart this week, the septet has already reached that coveted position dozens of times in the past. The South Korean musical troupe has thus far collected 37 No. 1s and a total of 117 top 10 smashes, including "00:00 (Zero O'Clock)." As BTS returns to the World Digital Song Sales chart, the group also claims one space on the World Albums tally. The group's compilation Proof dips one spot to No. 10, which means that troupe fills one space inside the highest tier on both of Billboard's world rankings as of this frame. Proof has now spent 156 weeks — exactly three years — on the World Albums chart.
