Hrithik Roshan's sister Sunaina recalls falling off beds during alcohol addiction, opens up about conditions in rehab centre: ‘Didn't sleep for 28 days'
Hrithik Roshan's elder sister, Sunaina Roshan, has been quite vocal about the health crises she's faced throughout her life. From battling tuberculosis and cancer to dealing with alcohol addiction, Sunaina has braved it all. In a new interview, she opened up on how she turned to alcohol and had to seek rehab to recover from the same. 'I was just going through a very vulnerable stage, probably after fighting tuberculosis and cancer. I had a lot of illnesses, like a bad attack of Zoster Herpes. I was just tired of fighting. I said I can't take this anymore, I need some help. I took to alcohol because I was very, very vulnerable,' said Sunaina.
In the interview with Pinkvilla, Sunaina recalled that she soon realised that alcohol is not the solution. 'After a month or so, I didn't like myself drinking from morning to night or in the evenings. That's the only phase I disliked myself. Dad had bodyguards. He did everything for me not to drink. But obviously, if an alcoholic drinks once, they just get it,' added Sunaina.
Injuries became common to Sunaina, thanks to alcohol addiction. 'I used to fall off beds and chairs. I used to get marks on my bodies. Not cuts, but my skin would turn red or blue. Once you start drinking and are at that vulnerable stage, your body wants more and more, each and every single day. And it's a very vicious cycle. Because once the alcohol effect is down, you get anxiety and palpitation, you are dehydrated. So to cover up for all that, you drink more. I'd advice everyone to not depend on any substance because for those many months, you feel good, but the aftereffects are bad,' explained Sunaina.
She then went to her parents, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and Pinkie Roshan, asking them to admit her into a rehab overseas. 'In India, you pay people money, they'll still get it (alcohol) for you on the sly. It's an easy source, no matter where you're in India. I told them I want to get cured because this is not me, succumbing to something like that,' said Sunaina.
She then went to a 28-day addictive treatment programme, in which she was confined to a room and was 'grilled' by six-seven counsellors. 'I didn't sleep for 28 days. They just asked you questions one after the other, just taking it all out of your system. We had our breakfast by 6-6:30. No perfumes, no sugar, no chocolates, nothing that's addictive,' added Sunaina.
In the same interview, Sunaina recalled how she hated going to school. However, that wasn't because she got any differential treatment as Rakesh Roshan's daughter. 'At that time, dad wasn't doing well at all, as an actor or even as a producer. Nobody treated us as star children. Never,' said Sunaina, but maintained that school felt like 'jail' to her.
'I hated studies. I nearly failed all my standards. But then of course, life taught me real life lessons, which are better than studying through books. And I proudly say that today, after fighting battling so many illnesses,' added Sunaina. She also revealed that Hrithik also faced a lot of bullying for his stuttering.

Inside Hrithik Roshan's luxurious Mumbai family home: Cozy personalized wall to classic interior
Step into the Roshan family residence in Mumbai, and you'll quickly sense that this is no ordinary celebrity home. With shimmering chandeliers, jewel-toned sofas, and thoughtfully curated interiors, the space exudes elegance, but it's the warmth and lived-in charm that truly set it apart. In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, Sunaina Roshan, sister of actor Hrithik Roshan, opened up about the emotional depth and memories tied to their family home. 'We moved here around 2001 or 2002. Before this, we lived in a much smaller house just across the street,' Sunaina recalls. 'That first home was compact but full of heart. It was the first house Dad bought after renting for so many years. We were always close, literally and emotionally.' The Roshans' living room space The Roshans' current home, in contrast, is expansive, tastefully designed, and filled with cozy corners and personal touches. The living room, a blend of maroon and deep blue sofas beneath a gleaming chandelier, makes a bold yet inviting statement. A large dining table sits at the heart of the space, symbolic of the family's long-standing bond over shared meals. 'Food has always been a big part of our lives,' says Sunaina. 'I used to be a foodie. Dad still is. And my nephew loves food, too. Mom jokes that if Hrithik wasn't an actor, he'd be in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's biggest foodie!' Hrithik, now living independently, still holds the family home close to his heart. The house has evolved with the family over the years. Each member contributed to the interior design, making it a true reflection of their personalities. Sunaina Roshan's bedroom Sunaina planned her bedroom herself, while the rest of the space was a collaborative effort involving their parents and Hrithik's ex-wife, Sussanne Khan. 'We wanted to keep it simple, not flashy,' she explains. 'Your home should reflect who you are.' Watch the full video here: The Roshans' card room and family photo wall This authenticity is visible in every room, from the elegant family photo wall filled with cherished memories to the card room, where filmmaker Rakesh Roshan continues a decades-old tradition of playing cards with close friends. The card room seems like a retreat corner in the house after a busy day at work. 'That card room is Dad's sanctuary,' Sunaina smiles. 'He's been playing with the same group of friends for over 40 to 45 years. It's never just about the game, it's about bonding, unwinding, and reliving memories.' The bar area, where Rakesh Roshan often entertains, is another favorite corner. His meticulous eye for detail and deep pride in the home shine through. 'He's very house-proud,' Sunaina says. 'He's always suggesting where new pictures should go.' Though luxurious, the Roshan home never feels impersonal. It's a place of nostalgia, laughter, quiet dinners, and vibrant get-togethers. It tells the story of a family that's close-knit, grounded, and full of love. As Sunaina puts it, 'For me, home means family. And family means togetherness, love, unconditional love, and support. That's what makes a house truly a home.' From its glamorous aesthetics to its emotional core, the Roshan family home is more than just a house. It's a living legacy of love, memories, and connection.
