TCS defers onboarding of 650 lateral hires amid project delays

Time of India23-07-2025
Bengaluru: In a recent development, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) informed candidates that their onboarding will be contingent upon business requirements, leaving approximately 650 lateral hires in a state of uncertainty.
These individuals, who possess varying levels of experience, were initially scheduled to join the company between July and September. However, due to delays in project commencement dates, their onboarding was postponed. The affected candidates expressed concerns, particularly those who already resigned from their previous positions, leaving them in professional limbo. TCS, in a communication reviewed by the Times of India, assured candidates that the company remains committed to honouring the job offers and will proceed with onboarding as soon as the need arises.
"We can confirm that, as always, TCS is committed to honour all offers we made, whether it is to freshers or experienced professionals. Everyone who received an offer from TCS will be onboarded. The joining dates are decided as per business demand and, in some cases, they do get adjusted to meet our business needs. We remain in continuous touch with all candidates in these cases and look forward to them joining our company soon," the company said in response to TOI's queries.

Many employees say that there is no response from the HR SPOCs (single point of contact) they are dealing with for the onboarding. In some cases, the HR department told candidates that their background verification is still ongoing and the new dates for onboarding will be communicated soon. This situation is reminiscent of a previous instance where TCS, along with other IT service companies, delayed the onboarding of fresh graduates.
The initial surge in demand for IT services during the Covid-19 pandemic led to over-hiring. However, subsequent global events, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and economic recessionary pressures, prompted these companies to pause the onboarding process.
In June, TCS implemented a significant change to its bench policy, requiring associates to secure a project within 35 days if they found themselves on the bench.
Failure to do so could result in severe consequences, including termination. This move was seen as a response to the fluctuating demand for IT services and the need for the company to optimise its workforce. The current delay in onboarding lateral hires highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the IT industry in balancing workforce management with fluctuating project demands.
While TCS reassured candidates of its commitment to their employment, the uncertainty left many in a precarious position, particularly those who already severed ties with their previous employers. As the situation unfolds, TCS's approach to managing its workforce and project demands will be closely watched by industry peers and potential employees alike, serving as a barometer for the broader IT services sector's response to ongoing global challenges.

KTU decides to waive year-out system for UG programmes this year

APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) has decided to waive the year-out system for all undergraduate programmes for the present academic year. The minimum credit requirement for promotion to the fifth and seventh semesters has been waived following representations from student organisations and affiliated colleges. The issue, which potentially affected several students under the 2019 regulations, had triggered protests recently. Students were required to earn a minimum of 21 out of 38 credits from the first two semesters to be eligible for promotion to the fifth semester and 47 out of 82 credits from the first four semesters to advance to the seventh semester. Numerous petitions While these criteria had been temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, they were reinstated in the 2023-24 academic year. However, this year, the university received numerous petitions from stakeholders, citing the difficulties faced by a substantial number of students who remain ineligible for promotion due to credit shortfalls. An analysis by the KTU's Academics Branch revealed that around 4,208 BTech students at present fell short of the required credits for seventh-semester registration. Besides, 6,428 students were ineligible for the fifth semester. These figures represent nearly 15% and 20% from the respective BTech batches. Students unable to progress to the fifth semester would require to transition to the revised 2024 curriculum, leading to additional academic burden due to transitory course requirements. Other students too The university also found that students from other undergraduate programmes face similar risks of losing academic continuity due to unmet credit requirements. The decision to waive the minimum credit requirement for promotion to the higher semesters will be subsequently reported at the upcoming meetings of the Academic Council and the Board of Governors.

Google has a solution to AI's power problem

Google has announced that it is leveraging its artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help stabilise and modernise power grids. The company announced new agreements with Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to integrate 'demand response' capabilities into its data centres , a strategy aimed at flexibly managing energy consumption. Google says that demand response allows large energy users, such as data centres, to reduce or shift their power usage during peak hours or when the grid is under stress. It explained that this not only enables faster interconnection of new data centres but also reduces the need for new power plants and transmission lines, helping grid operators manage the system more efficiently. Why this announcement is 'important' Flexible demand is a key component of Google's ambition to run its operations on 24/7 carbon-free energy . The company noted that this solution can be deployed quickly, helping to bridge the gap between short-term load growth driven by AI and long-term clean energy solutions. This marks the first time Google is specifically applying these demand response capabilities to machine learning (ML) workloads. This approach builds on a successful demonstration last year with the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), where the company reduced power demand from ML workloads during three separate grid events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Option Trading Mastery: Mr. Gopal Shares His Laxman Rekha Strategy For Free TradeWise Learn More Undo Previously, Google's demand response efforts focused on shifting non-urgent tasks, such as processing YouTube videos. The company stated that as AI adoption accelerates, it sees an opportunity to expand its demand response toolkit to manage large, new energy loads, even in areas with power generation and transmission constraints. On the earnings trajectory for the current and next fiscal, the firm expects various ongoing initiatives at Vedanta to aid growth. "Vedanta's capacity expansion journey in the aluminium business as well as vertical integration should bring cost advantages. LME prices have also bottomed out and should continue to move higher into FY26-27, likely aiding earnings growth." Echoing similar views on LME prices and its potential benefit, Citi Research cited that Vedanta's parent (Vedanta Resources) leverage is at comfortable levels. It listed potential upside in medium-term aluminium LME prices, lower cost, and the demerger as another positive for Vedanta, while adding that aluminium globally has a limited supply growth. Live Events Mumbai-based Nuvama Institutional Equities expects Vedanta to deliver quarter-on-quarter EBITDA growth in Q2. "Q2FY26 EBITDA is likely to increase 10 per cent-plus quarter-on-quarter on the back of higher prices and lower aluminium cost of production. Major aluminium projects are likely to be commissioned in Q2FY26. We reckon net debt/EBITDA ex-Hindustan Zinc shall fall to 1.7x by FY26-end, compared to 2.7x in FY25. Demerger of the business is likely to be concluded in Q4FY26," the firm said in its report. The brokerage expects Vedanta's all major projects except coal blocks to be likely commissioned in the current fiscal, providing volume growth and cost reduction visibility for the company. UK-based Investec stated in its post-earnings report that Vedanta is a key beneficiary of depreciation in the Indian Rupee. Other near-term positives listed by the firm include declining alumina prices and the company offering attractive yields. The firm has retained its buy recommendation on Vedanta. Research firms like Kotak Institutional Equities and IIFL have cited factors like cost efficiencies and deleveraging at both Vedanta Ltd and its parent Vedanta Resources as beneficial factors. Vedanta's adjusted profit after tax jumped 13 per cent year-on-year to Rs 5,000 crore. The company clocked its highest-ever first-quarter EBITDA of Rs 10,746 crore, which was up 5 per cent year-on-year.
