Guerschon Yabusele discusses injury-riddled 2024-25 season for Sixers
The Philadelphia 76ers were expected to contend in the 2024-25 season. They landed the big fish in free agency by bringing in Paul George on a 4-year $212 million deal as he joined Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to form one talented Big 3.
However, injuries decimated the roster. George was limited to only 41 games as he dealt with a variety of injuries from a bone bruise in his left knee to an adductor issue as well as a finger problem on his left hand that limited him. Embiid only played 19 games due to a bothersome left knee and Maxey even was limited to 52 games.
One of the lone bright spots was the play of Guerschon Yabusele. The Dancing Bear was a pickup late in free agency and averaged 11.0 points and 5.6 rebounds along with 2.1 assists while shooting 38% from deep. He played in 70 games with 43 starts and played a lot of different roles as Philadelphia dealt with so many different lineups.
In an interview with Basketball Network, Yabusele discussed the injury-riddled season:
Injuries are part of the game. You've got to learn and try to get back to it and get better. I think having Joel back, Paul George, this is going to be big for us. When we had those guys, and we had that run, we felt that we could beat everybody. That was really interesting, to have that part of the season, because at least people know that if they (were) healthy, that would have been a different scenario.
Yabusele is an unrestricted free agent so it remains to be seen if the Sixers can keep him in tow. Either way, he was a key part of Philadelphia's attack, and the goal should be to bring him back to Philadelphia and keep him as a fixture in this rotation.

One player expected to be available who can fill in at first base and add some power to the outfield is Baltimore Orioles slugger Ryan O'Hearn. On Tuesday, Newsweek's Drew VonScio discussed O'Hearn as a perfect fit for the Phillies to improve the offense on the July 31 trade deadline. "O'Hearn is having a career season with the Orioles this year, posting a 158 OPS+ in a season in which Baltimore has been desperate for any sort of positivity. Outside of him, though, the O's haven't had much success, which has led to him becoming available at the trade deadline," VonScio wrote. "O'Hearn's presence would give the Phillies a huge lineup boost to fill Harper's place at first base. When the superstar returns from injury, it gives Rob Thomson some flexibility in the lineup." Although the Orioles have not yet publicly entertained offers for O'Hearn, the longer they continue to dwell at the bottom of the AL East standings, the prospect of selling at the deadline becomes more feasible. If so, the Phillies would be smart to make an offer for O'Hearn. This season, the left-hander is hitting .316 with nine home runs, 24 RBIs, and a stellar 158 OPS+. It also helps that O'Hearn is only under contract through the rest of the 2025 campaign for an affordable $8 million – making him one of the best rental bats on the market. Philadelphia may want to wait and see the diagnosis of Harper's wrist injury. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola suffered another setback in his return to pitching when an MRI showed he has an injury in his right ribcage and will be shut down for two weeks, manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday. Nola had already been out since early May with a sprained right ankle that was progressing more slowly than expected. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto and that wiped out a planned session against live batters. Nola underwent testing this week and had what the Phillies called a stress reaction in his right ribcage. Thomson said ahead of Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs that Nola was unsure how the injury had occurred. Nola is 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts. Nola, who signed a $172 million, seven-year contract ahead of the 2024 season, injured his ankle on May 8 during pregame agility drills when the Phillies played the Rays at Steinbrenner Field. Nola is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA in 11 seasons with the Phillies. With Nola out, rookie Mick Abel will get an extended run in the Phillies' rotation. Abel, who impressed in his MLB debut when the Phillies first placed Nola on the IL, will start Tuesday's game against the Cubs. The 23-year-old was inserted back into the rotation last week, and the righty was strong in 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run and three hits in the club's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. Abel is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA, 11 strikeouts and no walks in 11 1/3 innings in the majors this season. Thomson said slugger Bryce Harper was starting to feel better as he recovers from right wrist inflammation that last Friday landed him on the 10-day injured list. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 57 games. He missed five games, from May 26 to June 2, with a bruised right elbow after being hit by a pitch from Atlanta's Spencer Strider.
