The story of Paramore's debut album and how it forced the pop-punk scene to take a long, hard look at itself

When Paramore were touring their debut album, fans assumed that the pop-punk upstarts from Tennessee were straight edge because of the 'X' they had written on their hands. The truth was that each band member had been marked by venue staff because they were too young to drink.
And so began the career of a band who've been forced to bat off rumours, half-truths and not-at-all-truths ever since, usually cast in the direction of singer and de facto band leader Hayley Williams for having the temerity to be a woman fronting an emo band.
These days, Williams is long-established as a totemic figure in alternative-pop and melodic, genre-fluid rock, but she was still finding her feet back in 2005 when Paramore – at that point Williams and guitarist Josh Farro and his drummer brother Zak and bassist Jeremy Davis – released their debut album All We Know Is Falling, which turns 20 this week.
The album is not one of their best. In fact, as already covered in Louder's ranking of Paramore records, it's probably their worst. But it remains a notable release both for introducing one of the 21st century's most enduring rock bands and capturing the giddy essence of '00s pop-punk.
It's a record that came together in a period when Paramore were still working out what and who they were. Williams had originally been signed to Atlantic Records as a solo artist but fought against the label's plans to turn her into a saccharine pop star, declaring she wanted to form a rock band instead. They'd only been together a matter of months when work on All We Are Is Falling began.
It's not exactly an era that Williams looks back on fondly. It didn't take long for the singer to realise what she was up against. Go searching for any interview from the era and there will be a question like the one that opens an interview from long-defunct music and film site The Trades: 'Hayley, is it any more difficult being a girl on the Warped tour?'.
At the time, Williams was happy to declare something along the lines of 'No, it's not, everything is great', but looking back years later, she opened up on the rampant misogyny encountered by her 18-year-old self. 'I did not know how toxic that world could be,' she told Vulture a few years ago.
'The pop-punk and emo scene in the early 2000s. It was brutally misogynistic,' she continued. 'A lot of internalised sexism, and even when you were lucky enough to meet other bands who were kind and respectful, there was other shit that wasn't. And I was really feisty. We got offered Warped tour, and there was a caveat: 'It's a stage called the Shiragirl Stage. It's all female.' I was pissed! I wanted to qualify for a real stage. When I've been offered female opportunities, it feels like a backhanded compliment. But people sometimes think that's anti-feminist, that I don't wanna be grouped in with the girls. As a 16-year-old who had dreams of playing with the big boys, it felt like we were being slighted. That summer we went out, and I'll never forget [it]. We played in Florida, and the stage was a truck that had a flatbed on it. It was so flimsy it would shake and fall apart. There might have been one other female in a band [on tour], and people were gawking. I don't think in a pervy way. They were confused, like, 'What's in this for me? What's she singing about? I'm a guy — how do I relate?'
Whilst All We Know Is Falling hardly set the world alight at the time of release, the success of its 2007 follow-up Riot!, which went to Number 15 in the US Billboard chart, belatedly shone a light on it. It would eventually be certified Gold in 2014, nine years after its release. By that point, the tumultuous world of Paramore had thrown up more hurdles for Williams to navigate with disgruntled ex-bandmates writing mean-spirited blogs criticising how the band was run and, erm, also saying that some of Williams' lyrics were 'ungodly'. Internal turmoil was never far away from Paramore.
But Williams persisted, and there was a feeling of hard-won triumph when she posted a handwritten note ahead of Paramore's headline performance at When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas in 2022. The event described itself as 'an epic line-up of emo and rock bands from the past two decades' and ahead of the show, Williams was in an understandably reflective mood with regards to how hard she'd fought to be accepted in a scene in which Paramore were now at the top table.
'To grow up in this scene was not a simple thing,' Willams wrote on Instagram. 'To be celebrating it (and to be celebrated by it) is not a simple thing. Nothing about this life – for you, me, or anyone – is simple… We fell in love with this subset of post-punk and hardcore likely because nothing else moved us. We didn't fit in other places. To be a young girl in love with this scene was to have the hope that I might find my own way to belong. It took years to find that belonging. It's taken a lot of unlearning. A lot of untangling knots I didn't even know were there. What I did know was that for every 'Take off your top!' or snarky punkzine review… For every dramatic headline pinned on my name, or any season of self-doubt… No one was going to define Paramore but Paramore.'
Continuing, she said, 'Nearly 20 years later, we find ourselves a pillar of the very scene that threatened to reject us. And me… Fuck the ones who doubted!'
Who knows if Hayley Williams would've kept at it if someone had handed her a list of every of fall-out and controversy coming Paramore's way back in 2005. But as All We Know Is Falling turns 20, she's well within her rights to feel like she won the battle. For that reason alone, it's a debut worth celebrating.

Pedro Pascal Is Heading Up A Stacked List Of Emmy Nominees, And I'm Banging My Head Over Who I Think Could Win

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The Emmy nominations are out, and after watching all the nominated performances for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series on the 2025 television schedule, I'm completely torn as to who I think should win. Pedro Pascal, Sterling K. Brown, Noah Wyle, Gary Oldman, and Adam Scott all put in amazing turns in amazing shows. How to pick just one? I don't know if I can, but by the end of this story, I hope to have some clarity. Pedro Pascal For The Last Of Us Pedro Pascal may indeed be the 'internet's daddy,' and a big reason why is his role as Joel in The Last of Us. There is one more season for The Last of Us, but given Joel's limited role in Season 2 (IYKYK), this may be Pascal's final shot at winning an Emmy for this particular role. If I'm honest, I think he deserves this award more for Season 1 of The Last of Us, as his role was much bigger, of course. However, since every scene he's a part of in Season 2 has so much emotional weight, it's not like he's undeserving now. The last few years have been amazing for Pascal and his fans. He also has Fantastic Four: First Steps coming out this month, and The Mandalorian and Grogu on the 2026 movie schedule. For Pascal to win an Emmy for one of the best video game adaptations ever would be a crowning achievement. An achievement he well deserves. But he's hardly alone in this category. Adam Scott For Severance Apple TV+ has put out some amazing movies and TV shows in the last few years and at the top of that list has to be Severance. The Emmys have certainly recognized that with an amazing 27 nominations in 2025, leading all shows. Adam Scott, who plays Mark S., leads a fantastic cast that includes fellow nominees Britt Lower, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman, and Patricia Arquette. I do think, as amazing as Severance is and as fantastic as Scott is, he may be the longshot in this category, which goes to show just how loaded it is. I won't be surprised by anything when the Emmy is announced on September 14th, but still, if I were a betting man, I wouldn't be betting on Scott. He'll surely be nominated again after Season 3 of Severance. Noah Wyle For The Pitt HBO Max's fantastic medical drama The Pitt was at first a tough watch for me, at first. It took me a couple of restarts to finally get into it. That's not because I thought it was bad, in fact, it was quite the opposite, it was so good–and so real–that I had to turn it off. It was literally freaking me out by how real it felt. The show's star, Noah Wyle, has five Emmy nominations to his name from his days on that other medical drama he once starred in, ER, but honestly, he hit a new level of performance with The Pitt. Though he never won for ER, and he might not win here, given the competition, his performance is riveting, heartfelt, and most importantly, real. Sterling K. Brown For Paradise Hulu's Paradise is the brainchild of Dan Fogelman, who is also responsible for a little show called This Is Us, for which Sterling K. Brown was nominated for five Emmys in this same category and won the award in 2017 after Season 1. Brown and Fogelman teamed up again for Paradise, and the outcome, unsurprisingly, was another fantastic season of television and a slew of Emmy nominations. Brown brings his trademark emotional depth to a character, Secret Service Agent Xavier Collins, who might have been two-dimensional in anyone but Brown and Fogelman's hands. On the surface, the show is a science fiction whodunit, but with Brown leading the amazing cast, it's so much more than that. A win here would be Brown's fourth Emmy (he also won for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson and Best Narrator for Lincoln: Divided We Stand), so it's never a surprise to see him on the stage accepting an award for acting excellence. Gary Oldman For Slow Horses Finally, we come to what is actually my personal favorite. Slow Horses, which you can stream with an Apple TV+ subscription, has been among the best shows on streaming for four seasons now (with a fifth right around the corner). Gary Oldman, who plays the crusty, smelly, chain-smoking, washed-up spy Jackson Lamb in the thriller, has been outstanding for all of those seasons. This is only Oldman's second nomination for Slow Horses, which almost seems criminal. The Oscar winner has never won an Emmy, and while I would be happy to see any of these actors win, I'm quietly rooting for Oldman, because I really love the show, and his performance is so good, I can smell his character through the screen–and I mean that in the best way. Who Will Win Is Anyone's Guess This is the Emmys, so of course there are always going to be five worthy Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series, but this year just feels different to me. It seems especially hard to predict a winner. While I'm personally rooting for Oldman, as I said, I don't know that he'll take it home, and really, nothing would surprise me here. I've been sitting here for almost a day thinking about this, and still have no clue who will win. All five actors put in deserving performances in excellent (and very popular) shows. Even though I said Adam Scott is maybe the longshot, the more I think about Severance and its dozens of nominations, the more I change my mind about that. That's where we are with this category. I go back and forth between all five. I can't wait to tune in to CBS in September to find out who wins. Solve the daily Crossword

As Pedro Pascal Wraps Filming Avengers: Doomsday, The Mandalorian Lead Is Lining Up A Movie Involving Fellow Star Wars Talent

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Pedro Pascal's certainly been keeping busy this year. In addition to starring in the 2025 movies Eddington, Materialists and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, this year has also seen him filming Avengers: Doomsday, which will come out at the end of 2026. While Doomsday as a whole is a ways off from wrapping principal photography, Pascal has reportedly finished his work on the upcoming Marvel movie, and now The Mandalorian's lead actor is apparently lining up a new movie that involves some fellow Star Wars talent. The latest update about Pedro Pascal's career is that he's in talks to star Searchlight Pictures' Behemoth!, which comes from the mind of filmmaker Tony Gilroy. With a resume that includes writing the first four Bourne movies, State of Play and Nightcrawler, as well as directing Michael Clayton, Duplicity and The Bourne Legacy, Star Wars fans know Gilroy co-writing and directing the reshoots for Rogue One. He then went on to create the prequel series Andor, which ended its two-season run in May. According to Deadline, 'things are heading in the right direction' with Pedro Pascal coming aboard Behemoth!, which Tony Gilroy will write, direct and produce. Specific plot details are being kept secret, but Gilroy has previously said it will follow a cellist, whom I assume Pascal would play. Behemoth! will begin filming this fall, but a release date hasn't been set yet. Disney+: from $9.99 a month w/ ad-supported planDisney+ is the home for the MCU and Star Wars franchises, meaning there's plenty of Pedro Pascal content to enjoy, even more so when The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives to the platform. Plans start at $9.99 a month for its new ad-supported plan. Go ad-free and pay $15.99 a month or save 16% and pre-pay $159.99 for a Deal It's cool to see that these two men who worked in separate corners of the Star Wars franchise are gearing up to work together on this upcoming movie. Since The Mandalorian is set several years after Return of the Jedi, and Andor covers the last five years of Cassian Andor's life leading up to Rogue One, there was no way Pascal and Gilroy were ever going to be able to collaborate in a galaxy far, far away. Now Behemoth! is here to bring them together, assuming Pascal is able to work out a deal with Searchlight. This Behemoth! news follows on the heels of Pedro Pascal both earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as Joel Miller in The Last of Us and making his MCU debut as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The latter co-starred Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch. This quartet will team up with the Avengers, New Avengers, X-Men and more when Avengers: Doomsday comes out on December 18, 2026. Before that, Pedro Pascal will return to the Star Wars universe for The Mandalorian & Grogu, the franchise's first theatrical movie since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. It arrives to the 2026 movies schedule on May 22, and we'll let you know once Behemoth! is slotted on the cinematic calendar too.
