The deployment of 11,680 iDM.Hydra units in Mogoditshane has already proven the efficacy of this solution. These smart meters enable real-time monitoring, consumption control, and improved service delivery. For residents, this translates into accurate billing, reduced water loss, and the power to manage water usage through an easy-to-use prepaid vending platform. For utilities, it brings improved revenue collection, early leak detection, and a significant reduction in non-revenue water.

Transformative vision: multi-use precinct plans unveiled for Strand Street quarry
Residents have submitted their comments on the land use application for the Strand Street Quarry. Image: supplied Plans to redevelop the Strand Street Quarry into a multi-use community precinct have reached the public feedback assessment phase, following the closure of the official comment period on 30 May 2025. The proposed redevelopment—initially presented for public comment on 17 April 2025—aims to transform the site at the corner of Strand and Hudson Streets, and 101 Vos Street, into a hub of sports, tourism, and community activity. The plans include a multi-purpose practice sports field and additional sports courts, the reconfiguration of Metro Police facilities, new tourist attractions such as markets and restaurants, and associated parking infrastructure. The proposal stems from a vision that has been developed in consultation with the community and local stakeholders since 2023. Eddie Andrews, the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, said: 'Currently, the Strand Street quarry is underutilised, and in fact, often occupied by illegal dwellings and used for anti-social behaviour. Thus, the proposed development will in fact improve the general surroundings in terms of safety, cleanliness, aesthetics, and so forth. 'The intention is to transform the quarry site into a multi-use community precinct that integrates sports, culture, economic activities and tourism in a unique setting. Once fully developed, the site must benefit the local communities and Capetonians for generations to come.' Andrews confirmed that the project is still in its early planning stages. 'We are not nearly at this point yet,' he said in response to questions around the budget. The land use application includes the consolidation, subdivision, and rezoning of certain City-owned erven to obtain the necessary development rights. The City will now assess the comments received in terms of the Municipal Planning By-law (MPBL) and relevant policy. 'The comments received will now be assessed in terms of the Municipal Planning By-law (MPBL) and relevant City policies, and if there are objections, a report will be compiled for consideration by the Municipal Planning Tribunal,' Andrews explained. Ahead of the public comment period, the City undertook a series of public engagement and regulatory steps, including: A due diligence and concept design process initiated in March 2023 in partnership with local representatives and stakeholders. Public advertising of the first draft concept in November 2023. Environmental and heritage assessments, including a Heritage Impact Assessment tabled with Heritage Western Cape in January 2025. A Living Heritage investigation conducted in unison with the concept design, recording oral histories and the cultural connections of Bo-Kaap residents to the site. 'The application is still being assessed. The City will be able to provide more information once the application process has been concluded in terms of the MPBL,' Andrews concluded. Mashatile's overseas trips spark fury as costs soar to R8m
The total cost of the visit as detailed in the parliamentary response amounted to R2,319,138. The detailed breakdown showed that R613,214 was spent on flights, R1,235,569 on accommodation and R410,926 on ground transport. A further R59,426 was spent on laundry services and meals, including R8,033 for laundry and R51,393 for food and beverages. Mashatile's own flight cost R117,518, while his accommodation amounted to R956,057 and his ground transport R77,360. His spouse, Humile Mashatile, who also participated in the official programme, incurred travel and accommodation costs of more than R190,000. The most expensive supporting official was media liaison officer Tshiamo Selomo, whose total trip costs amounted to R580,582. Other officials included the deputy president's private secretaries, advisers, communications staff and protocol officers, each with travel-related expenses ranging between R80,000 and R130,000. This latest expenditure adds to a growing international travel bill for the deputy president since taking office. Previous trips also disclosed in parliamentary replies include working visits to Ireland and the UK in September and October 2024, attendance at the inauguration of Botswana's President Duma Boko in November 2024, and participation in the Extraordinary Sadc Summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, that same month. The Ireland and UK visits cost the state R5,475,829, the Botswana trip R52,867 and the Zimbabwe summit R56,166. Together with the Japan visit, Mashatile's international travel expenses since July 2024 have now reached nearly R8m. While the deputy president's office maintains that these trips are critical for advancing South Africa's foreign policy and economic interests, the costs have attracted criticism amid public concern over government spending. TikTok says to increase investment in Britain
TikTok plans to raise its investment in the UK, its biggest community in Europe, with the creation of 500 more jobs, the Chinese-owned social media giant announced Monday. The news coincided with the start of London's Tech Week, which sees British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcoming some of sector's biggest firms. "TikTok's UK workforce will grow to 3,000 this year with the addition of more than 500 jobs," the company said in a statement. It added that it was investing in a new London office, set to open next year, and whose size will dwarf its current UK head office. It will take TikTok's investment in UK infrastructure to around £140 million ($190 million), the group said. Around half the UK population, more than 30 million people, use TikTok each month, making it the platform's "largest user-community in Europe", the statement added. "Whether through direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the wider economic contribution from millions of British businesses on TikTok, we're pleased to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK," said Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK and global head of operations and trust and safety. TikTok has been in the crosshairs of Western governments for years over fears personal data could be used by China for espionage or propaganda purposes. "What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and to creating an enjoyable and secure digital space to sustainably support creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy, which is why we also invest significantly in safety," Presser added Monday.
