WNBA Announces New Punishment For Injured Sophie Cunningham
WNBA Announces New Punishment For Injured Sophie Cunningham originally appeared on The Spun. The WNBA announced on Wednesday afternoon, August 20 a new punishment for injured Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham, 29, has been ruled out for the rest of the season, the Fever announced on Tuesday. Cunningham suffered a knee injury in the first half of Sunday's overtime win over the Connecticut Sun. She banged knees with Sun guard Bria Hartley and immediately went to the ground in pain. Cunningham, a former University of Missouri star who was traded from Phoenix to Indiana this offseason, missed the remainder of the game. On Tuesday, August 20, the Fever announced that Cunningham would miss the rest of the year. Now, the WNBA is adding salt into Cunningham's wounds, as she has been hit with a new fine. Cunningham announced on her podcast, "Show Me Something" which she co-hosts with "Summer House" star West Wilson, that she has been once again fined by the WNBA for something that she said. The veteran WNBA guard has been fined three times this year, with fines estimated at about $500. Cunningham, a seven-year veteran, is making $100,000 this year. The WNBA fined her for her comments on Paige Bueckers The WNBA chose to fine Cunningham for the comments she made about Paige Bueckers. Cunningham had accused the WNBA referees of favoring Bueckers, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. "I'm officially 3-for-3 on being fined by the WNBA," Cunningham said on this week's episode of her podcast. "They didn't like my comments on Paige Bueckers." Wilson couldn't believe it. Meanwhile, Cunningham thinks that she didn't really do anything wrong. "I didn't even say anything bad," Cunningham added. Cunningham did call out the WNBA's refs, though Cunningham called out the league's refs, suggesting that they "favored" Bueckers during their matchup. "I love Paige to death, don't get me wrong," Cunningham said on a previous edition of her podcast. "I think she's a hell of a player and would love to play with her one day, but those refs were giving her every freaking whistle last night. You literally couldn't touch her, couldn't touch her. That sh*t is so annoying to me. And if you're going to do that, then give it to our guards. I just hate the inconsistency." Cunningham's history of fines This is now the third time that Cunningham has been fined by the WNBA. She was previously fined $500 for a TikTok video making fun of the league's referees. Later on, she was fined $1,500 for criticizing the WNBA referees in a later podcast episode. Cunningham now has racked up more than $2,000 worth of fines during the 2025 season. Cunningham remains optimistic about her future following the injury, though, and she was able to laugh off of her latest fine by the league. "I was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time (and) she fell. There's no way that she would go in there and potentially try to hurt me. I have nothing but love for Bria … and so I hope people stop giving Bria some heat because I don't think she meant to do that at all," she said about her injury. The Fever, meanwhile, are 19-16 on the season, set to face the Minnesota Lynx on Friday, August 22. Fever's Caitlin Clark revealed to have suffered another injury
Fever's Caitlin Clark revealed to have suffered another injury originally appeared on The Sporting News Caitlin Clark last took to the floor for a WNBA game on July 15, when she suffered a right groin injury late in a road win over the Connecticut Sun. Since then, Clark has seen three of her teammates -- Sydney Colson, Sophie Cunningham and Aari McDonald -- go down with season-ending injuries, all while Clark continues her recovery and the Fever push for a playoff spot. After captivating audiences with her explosive shooting and dynamic playmaking as a rookie, Clark's sophomore season has seen her play only 13 games, and none over the past four-plus weeks, due to three separate injuries. Clark is set to miss her 14th game in a row on Friday when the Fever hosts the Minnesota Lynx, and on Wednesday, local reporters revealed a fourth injury that Clark sustained earlier this month. MORE: Fever's latest Caitlin Clark update is what no one wants to hear Scott Agness and Chloe Peterson reported that Clark suffered a "very mild" bone bruise in her left ankle on Aug. 7, when the Fever lost to the Mercury in Phoenix. Fortunately for Clark, the injury's minor nature did not threaten to compound the rehabilitation she has undergone in response to the groin injury she picked up in Connecticut. With head coach Stephanie White still not specifying a timeline for Clark to return to practice, it remains a waiting game for the Fever and their fans as Indiana (19-16) tries to hold down a playoff spot amid the longest regular-season schedule in WNBA history. How long is Caitlin Clark out for? Fever share latest injury update
Clark's status remains 'status quo' Though it's not the news that Indiana fans were hoping for, the Fever did provide a bit of an injury update on star point guard Caitlin Clark on Wednesday. Asked after practice for an update on Clark, Fever head coach Stephanie White indicated circumstances haven't changed much for the Indiana superstar. "I mean, until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, we're really status quo. Same as we have been," White said. White had said before last Sunday's Fever win that Indiana still hoped Clark could return before regular season's end. "That's the hope. The hope is that she's back," White said before Sunday's win. Despite optimism from fans that recent roster moves were an indication of Clark's imminent return, a Fever spokesperson clarified to the IndyStar earlier this week that the organization's recent roster moves didn't have anything to do with the injury status of star guard Caitlin Clark. Clark has been sidelined by a series of injuries during the 2025 WNBA season. A left quadriceps injury, a left groin injury and this right groin injury have all cost Clark significant time during the 2025 campaign. With this news from White, it certainly seems as though Clark's stretch of regular season games missed due to injury will stretch to at least 14 straight. Clark has missed each of the Fever's past 13 regular season games with her right groin injury. That marked the 22nd regular season game that Clark has missed during the 2025 WNBA season and the 23rd game overall, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. This latest update from coach White doesn't feel like the most promising development for fans holding out hope that Clark will indeed still return from injury in the 2025 season. ESPN play-by-play broadcaster Ryan Ruocco said during the Fever's Tuesday, Aug. 12 game against the Dallas Wings that the Fever were hoping that Clark would return to practice this week. "Now, that stretch where they have the week off is where Stephanie White reiterated to us today she's hoping Caitlin Clark returns to practice. Stephanie talked yesterday about how Caitlin has been running more, doing more on-court work. "She is hoping that Caitlin returns to practice next week, would need multiple days of practice before she then gets into a game, but you see the way the schedule stacks up after that week and wonder could one of those games against Minnesota or maybe the 26th at home against Seattle be a potential return game," Ruocco said. Obviously, that return to practice for Clark hasn't happened yet, and it's beginning to seem like it could be telling. Limited to 13 games this season, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field-goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy.
