Conocarpus is a climate ally, not a threat: Experts

Tirupati: Amid rising misinformation about the Conocarpus plant, environmentalists are intensifying efforts to educate the public on its ecological benefits. Speaking at a press conference organised by Jana Chaitanya Vedika in Tirupati on Sunday, environmental expert Prof K Bayyapu Reddy strongly defended the species, urging citizens to protect rather than vilify it.
Conocarpusfrom Yemen has thrived across several countries. Prof Reddy highlighted the plant's potential as a powerful tool against climate change, citing its ability to absorb large quantities of carbon dioxide, release abundant oxygen.
He pointed out that many everyday crops like tomatoes, potatoes, and coffee were also introduced from abroad. He noted that Bengaluru institutes have thousands of Conocarpustrees,but no student complained any health issue. He further dismissed fears about the plant's roots damaging infrastructure, citing the example of Guntur, where Conocarpus trees planted along road dividers grew without causing any structural damage.
Responding to few claims, he explained that its dense foliage makes it unsuitable for nesting but does not repel avian life.
Prof Reddy called for the formation of a scientific committee comprising environmentalists, scientists, and doctors to study and publicise the true environmental impact of Conocarpus.
Jana Chaitanya Vedika State President Vallamreddy Lakshmana Reddy stressed the urgent need to improve India's low tree-to-person ratio and supported research confirming Conocarpus's remarkable carbon absorption capacity.
The organisation announced plans to launch awareness campaigns.
The event was attended by several notable personalities, including chartered accountant E Phalguna Kumar, former APCOST Member Secretary and geologist Prof TV Krishna Reddy, and National BC Front Convener KML Narasimha.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) Chairman Prof V Balakista Reddy, expressed that Telangana's rapid transformation into an emerging educational hub is a matter of pride. Addressing after unfurling the Tricolour on the Telangana State formation day on Monday, he stated, 'We are equipping our youth for global leadership, and Telangana proudly hosts 41 dynamic universities and higher education institutions.' Prof Reddy highlighted the establishment of four new universities since the formation of the state: Veera Naari Chakali Ilamma Women's University (VCIWU), which empowers women through higher education; Young India Skill University (YISU), focused on job-ready skills and industry alignment; the Earth Sciences University in Kothagudem, dedicated to advancing sustainable development; and the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University (SSCTU), which aims to provide quality education for tribal communities. He emphasised that education must equip students with real-world skills, stating, 'Knowledge is essential, but it is the application of knowledge that builds careers and contributes to state-building.' Prof. Reddy shared several transformative initiatives led by TSCHE over the past year, including a partnership with the T-SAT Network to enhance digital learning across Telangana, collaboration with NASSCOM to implement industry-aligned skill programs for employability, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras to establish research centres and innovation hubs. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) celebrated Telangana State Formation Day. During the celebrations, tributes were paid to the statues of Dr B R Ambedkar near the university library and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru near the administration building. Later, Vice-Chancellor Dr T Kishen Kumar Reddy unfurled the national flag, highlighting the progressive journey of Telangana State and the crucial role of educational institutions in building a new state. He noted that JNTUH is at the forefront of preparing students for industry demands and contributing to development through platforms like J-Hub. He emphasised that quality education is being made accessible to all through sub-centers in Wanaparthy, Mahabub Nagar, Paleru, and Manta.

HANAMKONDA Kakatiya University (KU), Warangal, Vice-Chancellor K. Pratap Reddy stated that he has taken all possible measures to strengthen the university in all aspects since assuming the role of VC on October 19, 2024. He added that he was successful to a great extent in these efforts, with the block grant enhanced to ₹144 crore from ₹98 crore and ₹50 crore in development grants besides maintaining the examination schedule. Addressing a press conference along with Registrar Prof. V. Ramchandram here on Tuesday, Mr. Reddy said that university had secured CSR funding from Infosys, with 300 computers sanctioned out of which 120 were received in two phases so far. 'In terms of infrastructure and resource mobilisation, The Geology Department labs were inaugurated, and other departmental labs were strengthened. Additionally, pure drinking water facilities were established in university hostels in collaboration with Bala Vikasa,' Mr. Reddy said explaining his efforts. Regarding the employee benefits, he said terminal benefits, PRC arrears, and outstanding dues were cleared for teaching and non-teaching staff. 'I have also prioritised faculty and staff welfare, issuing CAS notifications and processing compassionate appointments for eligible candidates. The university has also been recognised for its excellence, with Kakatiya University being conferred with the 'Best Government University – Pharmacy' award by a media organisation,' the VC said. In terms of research and innovation, two patents were registered in the Departments of Zoology and Pharmacy. Faculty members from the Pharmacy and Economics Departments have contributed new academic publications and books, he said. Meanwhile, the university is set to host several notable events, including the 23rd Convocation scheduled for July 7 and the Telangana Science Congress. 'Nearly 1,000 delegates are expected to participate in the Science Congress, which is scheduled from August 19 to 21,' he said. Controller of Examinations, Prof Rajender Katla and several senior faculty members were present at the press meet.
