Football star reveals heartbreaking reason behind neck tattoo as she prepares to play in the Euros quarter-finals
German keeper Ann-Katrin Berger, who will be in goal when her squad faces France in the quarter finals of the competition on Saturday, has a series of symbols inked just under her right ear, and a tree and a compass on her arm.
Speaking to German newspaper Bild, the 34-year-old, who's engaged to England defender Jess Carter, after the pair fell in love while both playing for the Blues, revealed that one of the tattoos hides a cancer scar, while the other two are also linked to the illness that has threatened her career twice.
The shot-stopper, who plays her club football at Gotham FC in New York, was first diagnosed with the disease in 2017.
She revealed that she had thyroid cancer while playing for Birmingham City and told fans at the time she she would 'fight every day' to beat the disease.
In 2022, she was re-diagnosed with the same type of cancer after four years in remission.
Berger told Bild that she deliberately chose a neck tattoo because people would then talk about that rather than the marks left by her surgery.
She said: 'I had problems with the scars I had from the cancer surgery. They bothered me. I had them tattooed over so no one would see them. Now everyone asks me about the tattoo and not about the scars.'
Berger - who won three Women's Super League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups with Chelsea - returned to action just over a month after being diagnosed with cancer.
The German national star now has other tattoos related to her two diagnoses.
She explained: 'I have a tree on my arm now, that's the newest thing. I got it done when I was ill for the second time.
'The roots of a tree are more important than the beauty around them. I got a compass with a folder tattooed when I was ill for the first time.'
The goalie is once again in remission and has regular check-ups every six months.
Germany are currently in the other side of the Euros draw but Berger and her fiancee could meet on the pitch if they can defeat France.
The couple were on opposing sides in the 2022 Euros final, where the Lionesses crushed Germany to win the title.
The two became friends while playing for Birmingham in 2016, with the now couple eventually sharing a flat together.
English defender Carter had only previously been in relationships with men and has said that, despite the pair sharing undeniable chemistry, she wasn't sure what was going on at first.
She told The Guardian previously: 'I had broken up with my boyfriend when I moved in, but as far as I knew I was straight.'
However, after a 'date' (which Carter initially thought was just as friends) the pair kissed while watching a movie at home, and Berger had well and truly convinced her Chelsea teammate that the spark was real.
And the tables have certainly turned since Carter had to be subtly coaxed into understanding her feelings for Berger. Now it's the English international who is loud and proud for the world to see.
'I think I was – and probably still am – more comfortable than Ann is with publicising our relationship, but that is just because Ann is a very private person whereas I am more of a "the whole world could know and I wouldn't really care" kind of person,' Carter said in 2021.
'Over time and because I will say whatever, she has kind of got used to it and goes with it. By seeing that it is normal and you can be whoever you want to be ... (it) shows younger people that it is okay to be you.'
Announcing their engagement on X, the couple posed alongside one another for a selfie, with the caption reading: '7 years down, forever to go'.
Reflecting on her her cancer battle with BBC Sport in 2023, Berger insisted the challenges she has faced has made her a stronger person.
'To be at a Euros [when] nobody knew then, the emotion of the Euros took the negative part away from my brain,' she recalled.
'It was a good year. I didn't let my illness come across and say "hey, you shouldn't have a good year because I'm back again".'
Berger also revealed she is keen to discuss her cancer diagnosis, despite it often being a taboo subject for many people.
She added: 'I actually quite like to talk about it. It's a topic nobody likes to talk about but in my position I think I can help people.
'I'm not sitting here saying everything was easy, because it's not, but whatever your main focus is - and mine was football - you can achieve everything you want to.
'That's why I think it's really important for me to be open. I did it, so why can't everyone else?'

Nicolas Jackson: Manchester United monitoring Chelsea forward
Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Nicolas Jackson as the forward weighs up his future after Chelsea's summer spending spree, which included the acquisition of strikers Liam Delap and João Pedro. Pedro scored three times for Chelsea having joined up with them during their victorious Club World Cup triumph after his £60million move from Brighton & Hove Albion while Delap, who joined from Ipswich Town last month for £30million, scored in the group stage win over Espérance de Tunis. Jackson failed to score in the tournament in the United States and the 24-year-old Senegalese was banned for two matches for a studs-up challenge on Flamengo defender Lucas Ayrton. Chelsea are not actively looking to sell Jackson, who cost them £32million two years ago when they bought him from Villarreal, but there is a feeling that they could end up cashing in on the player if they receive a decent offer for him, and United are among a number of interested clubs. AC Milan and Aston Villa are also monitoring events. Chelsea also spent an initial fee of £48.5million on Jamie Gittens, the winger from Borussia Dortmund, a fortnight ago. United want to bolster their attack after they scored only 44 Premier League goals last season, their worst total for a single league campaign since 1973-74 (38 goals) — when they were relegated. Jackson celebrates Chelsea's Club World Cup success, a competition in which he made one start, scored no goals and was sent off four minutes into another substitute appearance GETTY IMAGES After their signing of attacker Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5million last month, United are in talks with Brentford over a deal for forward Bryan Mbeumo, who is valued at a similar price by the London club. United have so far failed to get rid of wantaway players like Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho, but they are still set to make up to about £18million from sell-on clauses in the contracts of Anthony Elanga, Maxi Oyedele and Álvaro Carreras, the latter of who joined Real Madrid in a £37million deal from Benfica on Tuesday.

Jennifer Aniston teases hot new romance with hunky guru in cryptic post about 'radiating love'
Jennifer Aniston has fans buzzing after packing on the PDA with new beau Jim Curtis during a romantic yacht getaway — and now she's dropping cryptic clues on Instagram. After exclusively revealed the Friends icon, 56, spent the Fourth of July weekend with Curtis, the pair were seen looking every bit the couple in exclusive photos from the Mallorca yacht escape. In one snap, Aniston rested her hand on Curtis' thigh while chatting with friends, and in another, he gently stroked her hair as they lounged on deck — the pair appeared unable to keep their hands off each other. 'She's dating Jim and is very happy, but she's still taking things slowly,' a source previously told adding that Jen — whose exes include Brad Pitt and Justin Theroux — 'feels very connected to Jim, as they have the same level of emotional intelligence, unlike some of her previous suitors.' And now, Aniston appears to be dropping hints about the new man in her life. On Monday, she took to Instagram Stories with a pair of cryptic posts that had fans reading between the lines. First, the Friends alum reposted a tweet that read: 'The Friends theme song was right, no one told us life was gonna be this way' — seemingly referencing an unexpected new chapter in her life. Then came the real eyebrow-raiser: a quote from 'mindfulness expert' Case Kenny that read, 'People who still radiate love in a world that has shown them its darkest sides, please never change.' Fans immediately began theorizing that the message was about Curtis, who's known for his uplifting, love-centric philosophy. Curtis regularly posts inspirational quotes and 'manifestations' to help people 'break free from their past and patterns' to find love - and Aniston has been following him on the social media platform for almost two years. Meanwhile, Jen's Instagram clues came hot on the heels of Curtis expressing how meaningful their Mallorca getaway had been. 'I am back from vacation and what an experience!' he wrote in his newsletter, according to Page Six. 'When I was sick, sad, stuck and in pain I never thought I would have the abundance, joy and love I now experience on a daily basis. 'I just took one step, made one decision and the next followed — now I look back and realize, oh! That course, that life change, that pain, resulted in this magic.' Jim added: 'The same life that brings struggle also brings opportunity. The possibility of something better — more aligned, more free, more meaningful — is always here.' Curtis has had his own share of life-changing challenges. Beginning in the summer of 1995, right after his freshman year at the University of New Hampshire, when he was hit with severe nerve pain that would stay with him for years. An MRI later revealed lesions on his spinal cord, a diagnosis that pushed Curtis to pivot from his 'frat guy athlete' persona and explore a different path focused on healing and personal transformation. He credits a university professor for setting that new course into motion. 'He taught me to meditate and introduced me to the idea of mindfulness: focusing on just being present,' Curtis shared in a 2017 interview. Curtis was previously married to Rachel Napolitano, though their relationship reportedly ended not long after she gave birth to their son, Aidan, who is now a teenager. Aniston, of course, has had her own romantic history in the spotlight. She was famously married to Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005 before their headline-making split when Pitt began a relationship with Angelina Jolie while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith. She later tied the knot with actor and writer Justin Theroux in 2015, but the marriage ended in divorce three years later. In a 2022 interview, Aniston opened up for the first time about her private struggle to have children — and the emotional toll it took. 'It was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road,' she admitted. 'All the years and years and years of speculation... It was really hard. 'I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it,' she added. ' 'I would've given anything if someone had said to me, "Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor." You just don't think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed.' Still, Aniston noted: 'I have zero regrets.' As for Theroux, 53, he recently tied the knot again — this time in a secret ceremony with 30-year-old actress Nicole Brydon Bloom. Sources say the news came as a surprise to Aniston, but she didn't hesitate to extend her well wishes. 'Jennifer was one of the first to congratulate Justin on getting married,' a source told DailyMail in March. ' 'Yes, it took her by surprise, but they have maintained a close friendship, and she is happy for him that he has found true love.' The insider added that while Jen is genuinely supportive of her ex's new chapter, there was a tinge of bittersweetness — especially given the age gap between Theroux and his new wife.

Tim Davie insists he is fit to lead the BBC in the ‘right way' amid scandals
BBC director-general Tim Davie has asserted his ability to guide the corporation "in the right way", even as it grapples with a string of recent reputational crises. The broadcaster has faced significant scrutiny in recent months, including breaches of its own editorial accuracy guidelines, the controversial livestreaming of Bob Vylan's Glastonbury performance, and recent misconduct allegations involving Gregg Wallace, the former presenter of MasterChef. The corporation's annual report showed that Mr Davie, who has been in the role since 2020, has had a 3.8 per cent pay rise with his salary going up £20,000 from £527,000 last year to £547,000. Mr Davie was asked during the release of the corporation's 2024/2025 annual report on Tuesday whether he would resign. He said: 'I simply think I'm in a place where I can work to improve dramatically the BBC and lead it in the right way. 'We will make mistakes, but I think as a leadership and myself, I've been very clear, and I think we have been decisive. 'There's enormous, massive noise and different opinions about what we should do, but I think we have been clear. We are making the right decisions. We're being transparent on what we do, and I think that's what counts. I would also say that under my tenure, I've set a very clear stall out in terms of impartiality. 'I think we're setting a global standard in terms of public service broadcasting and media. 'Under my leadership, and the team I've assembled, I think we feel very passionately about that. ' One of the things that I focus on, as a leader, is there has never been a more important time for public service broadcasting. ' Gaza has been the most challenging editorial issue I've had to deal with, but the importance of fair, balanced reporting, the need for high quality, homegrown programming in the face of massive pressure, I think, has never, ever been greater. 'I believe my leadership and the team I've assembled can really help the leadership thrive in that environment.' This comes after a review conducted by Peter Johnston, the director of editorial complaints and reviews – which is independent of BBC News, and published on Monday, found its documentary, Gaza: Surviving a Warzone, breached BBC editorial guidelines on accuracy for failing to disclose details of the narrator's father. The report did not find any other breaches of editorial guidelines, including breaches of impartiality and also found no evidence that 'outside interests' 'inappropriately impacted on the programme'. Since the report was published, broadcasting regulator Ofcom announced it would investigate the documentary under its own broadcasting code, which states that factual programmes 'must not materially mislead the audience'. Dr Samir Shah, BBC chair, added: 'I want to be absolutely clear that I and the board support Tim Davie's leadership fully. 'He has shown very confident and decisive leadership in a very, very challenging environment, right from the start 'The number of issues of vision from people behaving badly to News in some cases, when it's appropriate, decisively and shouldn't do it all, in other cases, 'We are the BBC, and we will do this properly. We do it fairly, we do it correctly, and we will then take action. That's where we are at the moment. 'Tim Davie and his team, and Tim in particular, has shown very strong leadership throughout all this period, and he has my full support.' Dr Shah also said in the annual report: 'The BBC is a wonderful place to work. Our staff are dedicated, hard-working and treat each other with respect. However, there are pockets in the organisation where this is not the case. 'There are still places where powerful individuals – on and off-screen – can abuse that power to make life for their colleagues unbearable.'
