Russia claims capture of first village in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region

The Sun3 days ago
MOSCOW: Russia has declared the capture of Dachne village in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, marking its first claimed territorial gain in the central area since the invasion began over three years ago.
The Russian defence ministry confirmed the advance, though Ukrainian forces earlier reported repelling attacks near the settlement.
Dnipropetrovsk, home to the strategic city of Dnipro, has faced relentless Russian strikes since the war began in February 2022.
The region serves as a critical industrial and mining hub for Ukraine, making further Russian advances a potential threat to Kyiv's military and economic stability.
While Dnipropetrovsk is not among the five regions Russia has formally annexed, Moscow has previously targeted Dnipro with experimental missile strikes, including an attack on an aeronautics facility in late 2024. - AFP

EU Parliament revises rules after Huawei probe blunder targets wrong lawmaker

BRUSSELS: A major blunder in a Belgian corruption investigation linked to Huawei has forced the European Parliament to revise its rules, aiming to protect lawmakers from unfounded accusations. Italian MEP Giusi Princi was mistakenly named in the probe, despite having no connection to the case. Princi, a member of Forza Italia, was shocked when she learned Belgian prosecutors sought to lift her parliamentary immunity in May. Authorities alleged she attended a dinner with Huawei lobbyists in June 2023, but records showed she was not even in Belgium at the time. Instead, she was in Calabria attending her daughter's school play. 'I cannot understand how they could have made such a blatant mistake,' Princi told AFP. Despite submitting nearly 100 pages of evidence, including geo-tagged photos, her name was still publicly announced before prosecutors withdrew the request. The error prompted EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola to tighten procedures. Future immunity waiver requests must now include clear details of alleged crimes before being disclosed. 'I will not accept the targeting and tarnishing of MEPs without a solid basis,' Metsola stated. The mishap has raised concerns over Belgium's handling of EU corruption cases. Some lawmakers, like Green MEP Daniel Freund, argue such investigations should be handled by the European Public Prosecutor's Office. 'Some question marks hang over the Huawei probe,' Freund said. The Huawei case, involving alleged bribes to influence EU policy, has seen eight people charged. Four other MEPs named alongside Princi deny wrongdoing. - AFP

EU chief von der Leyen faces no confidence vote amid leadership criticism

STRASBOURG: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen faces a no-confidence vote in the European Parliament, a rare challenge initiated by far-right lawmakers. The motion, pushed by Romanian lawmaker Gheorghe Piperea, criticises her leadership style and lack of transparency in Covid vaccine negotiations with Pfizer. Von der Leyen dismissed the motion as a divisive tactic, accusing its backers of spreading conspiracy theories and aligning with Russian interests. She urged unity, emphasising the need for stability amid ongoing challenges like US trade talks and Russia's war in Ukraine. The controversy centres on undisclosed text messages between von der Leyen and Pfizer's CEO during vaccine procurement talks. Critics argue the secrecy fuels perceptions of centralised, opaque decision-making. The issue has drawn criticism even from traditional allies, with centrist leader Valerie Hayer calling the commission 'too centralised and sclerotic.' Piperea also alleges EU interference in Romania's recent presidential election, where pro-European Nicusor Dan narrowly defeated nationalist George Simion. The vote followed claims of Russian meddling and far-right social media manipulation, leading to a re-run. Despite the backlash, the motion is unlikely to pass. While some far-right factions, including Hungary's Viktor Orban, support it, key groups like the centre-right EPP and Italy's ruling party back von der Leyen. The motion requires a two-thirds majority, a high threshold given her mainstream support. - AFP

Israeli army intercepts missile from Yemen amid rising tensions

JERUSALEM: The Israeli military confirmed intercepting a missile fired from Yemen early Thursday, marking another escalation in regional tensions. The missile launch follows recent Israeli airstrikes on Huthi rebel positions in Yemen. 'Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted,' the army stated on social media platform X. The Huthis, backed by Iran, have intensified attacks on Israeli-linked ships and ports since the Gaza war began in October 2023. This week, they claimed responsibility for sinking two commercial vessels, including the Eternity C, which they alleged was bound for Israel. Huthi military spokesman Yahya Saree warned shipping companies against dealing with Israeli ports, vowing further attacks until Israel ends its blockade on Gaza. The rebel group also sank the Magic Seas, accusing its owner of ties to Israel. The renewed hostilities disrupt a fragile ceasefire brokered with the US in May and force shipping firms to reroute around Africa, bypassing the Red Sea—a critical trade corridor handling 12% of global commerce. - AFP
