Tips and deals to help maximize your summer vacation dollars
If you want to stretch your budget further, try these tactics that can help maximize vacation dollars.
The insiders' guide: Where to go in Europe to avoid the crowds
Although travelling within Canada can be notoriously expensive, some recent changes may help reduce your overall costs.
Porter Airlines expanded its network and now flies across the country. Both Air Canada and WestJet have also increased their domestic routes as they've scaled back some flights to the United States. As a result, lower fares have been available.
Additionally, the federal government recently announced a Canada Strong Pass, which allows those under the age of 18 to get free access to art galleries, national parks, museums and free seats on VIA Rail when travelling with their parents. While specific details are yet to be announced, this initiative could offer a valuable opportunity to cut costs.
When planning your travel, make sure to check the local tourism website since they often have exclusive deals or passes.
Stephanie Clovechok, chief executive officer of Discover Saskatoon, said her group's website helps direct those planning their itineraries to a range of services and deals.
'Our offers and packages page connects travellers directly with hotel promotions and seasonal experiences developed in partnership with our hospitality and tourism members,' she said.
In B.C. there's Whistler's offer of up to 25 per cent off and a complimentary $100 activity voucher on stays of three nights or more, or up to 30 per cent off and a $200 voucher on stays of at least five nights.
Those headed to Nova Scotia may be interested in the Halifax Experience Pass and the Nova Scotia Museum Pass. Both give you access to some top attractions at one low price.
When you bundle your flights, hotel and airport transfers together as a vacation package, it's often significantly cheaper than booking everything separately. That said, major resorts such as Sandals and Grand Velas often have seasonal sales, so booking separately might make sense.
Working with a travel agent can also be beneficial since many don't charge a fee and offer practical advice.
'For flexible travellers, we can help them find the best days to depart to maximize savings,' travel adviser Jennifer Zabloski said. 'Sometimes leaving the day before or after your desired date can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.'
She points out that online photos and reviews of resorts are frequently misleading, so collaborating with an adviser who has visited the properties and knows the location well can ensure you're getting the best fit for your needs.
Another sun destination with deals right now is Bermuda, where visitors can get up to 30 per cent off hotel stays, and 20 per cent off air and hotel with BermudAir Holidays.
If you're headed to Europe for the first time, it will be tempting to visit major destinations such as Paris, Rome and London, however, those cities tend to be the most expensive. Instead, consider more budget-friendly destinations such as Portugal, Poland, Romania or Bulgaria, where costs could be considerably cheaper.
When it comes to flights, choosing an airline that provides a stopover program, such as Icelandair, Emirates, Turkish Airlines and TAP Portugal, can be a cost-effective way to visit multiple countries. Stopover programs allow travellers to break up their journey – usually by at least 24 hours - and visit cities that are en route to their ultimate destination. Google Flights and Flightconnections.com are excellent websites for discovering the lowest prices and best routes.
Many European cities, such as Amsterdam, Vienna and Berlin, offer a museum pass that can save you money, depending on how many attractions you plan to visit.
'Regardless of what loyalty points you collect, using them for long-haul travel often makes sense because it'll immediately reduce the cost of your flights or hotels – typically your largest expense,' said Sash Bhavsar, co-founder of pointspartners.ca, a consultancy firm that frequent flyers hire to help them maximize their points.
Don't overlook local hotel brands abroad, like Tokyu Stay and APA in Japan. They're often more affordable and offer a more authentic experience than large international chains, Mr. Bhavsar noted.
If possible, opt for a regional or smaller international airport instead of the main one at your destination to save on airport landing fees and taxes that are often reflected in ticket prices.
Secondary airport hubs charge airlines less, so if visiting Bangkok, Thailand, see if you can land at Don Mueang International (DMK) instead of Suvarnabhumi (BKK). And in Buenos Aires, for example, aim for Aeroparque Internacional Jorge Newbery (AEP) rather than Ezeiza (EZE).
Many seasoned cruisers turn to vacationstogo.com as a starting point for trip research. While it may not be the most user-friendly website, its filtering system is arguably the best because it allows travellers to browse cruise deals by departure date, ports, cruise lines and trip duration. Once you've found what you're looking for, contact the cruise line and book directly for the best price.
'Most cruise lines offer seasonal promotions, including discounted fares, onboard credits and special deals like free passage for third and fourth guests,' Lisa Huizing, a vacation consultant with Expedia Cruises, said.
Planning ahead and prepaying for add-ons such as beverage packages, Wi-Fi, airport transfers, excursions and gratuities can also help, Huizing added.
No one wants an unexpected charge at the end of their voyage, so securing these extras in advance can ensure a more enjoyable experience. When booking, ask about all-inclusive packages that bundle these extras at a reduced price.

ATB remains ‘committed' to energy industry after Cormark acquisition, CEO says
Curtis Stange, President and Chief Executive Officer of ATB Financial, joins BNN Bloomberg to discuss working with Cormark as the company acquires the investment bank. Sorry, we're having trouble with this video. Please try again later. [5006/404] The head of ATB Financial says the Calgary-based financial institution will continue to focus on supporting Canada's energy industry following the announcement of a major acquisition. 'We are very committed to the energy industry in Western Canada and more broadly, Canada,' Curtis Stange, president and CEO of ATB, told BNN Bloomberg in a Tuesday interview. 'If you compare how we put our balance sheet to work; the percentage of our balance sheet as a total percentage of our total assets, it is meaningfully higher than any of the other banks in Canada… we are long on the energy industry. Stange's comments came a day after ATB said it would acquire all outstanding shares of independent investment bank Cormark Securities, which has offices in Toronto and Calgary. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The agreement will combine Cormark with ATB's growing capital markets business, which Stange said has delivered results in recent years that the firm is 'quite pleased' with. 'We felt that an acquisition of this size was something that was in our future. We've been talking to the Cormark team… for eight to 12 months now and we're very happy with the announcement from yesterday,' he said. 'We have complimentary sectors… we are very focused on energy and diversifying, and Cormark has a very good mining business and a very successful diversified business we think we're going to unpack. We think there's great opportunity and great synergies between the two firms.' ATB, an Alberta Crown corporation, is optimistic about the growth of the Canadian economy and how its latest acquisition puts it in position to benefit from an increasing focus on nation building and self-sufficiency given the changing international trade landscape, Stange said. 'We think for the Canadian economy, we see some reasonable growth. We certainly see reasonable growth in Western Canada,' he said. 'Cormark has a client base that is quite diversified, similar to ATB. We think the flow of capital and bringing buyers and sellers together in the sectors that we're very specified in right now in addition to where we're going to focus will be a good thing for the Canadian economy, there's no doubt.'

Apple Rises 9% in a Month: Buy, Sell or Hold the AAPL Stock?
Apple AAPL shares have risen 8.9% in the past month, driven by strong third-quarter fiscal 2025 results and a steady outlook despite tariff-related headwinds. Since the results announced on July 31, AAPL shares have appreciated 9.4%. Since Aug. 6's announcement of increasing U.S. investments to $600 billion, Apple shares have climbed 6.5%. Apple is benefiting from the growing adoption of Apple Intelligence that is infused across iPhone, Mac, and iPad. The company reported record June quarter revenues in more than two dozen countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Latin America, Western Europe, the Middle East, India and South Asia. The robust performance was driven by double-digit growth across iPhone (13.5% year over year), Mac (14.8% year over year) and Services (13.3% year over year). For iPhone, Apple saw double-digit growth in emerging markets, including India, the Middle East, South Asia and Brazil. Services grew double-digit in both developed and emerging markets. Apple Intelligence is playing a key role in driving this growth thanks to the addition of more than 20 features that include visual intelligence, cleanup and powerful writing tools. Although Apple continues to play catch-up in the AI domain against Amazon AMZN, Microsoft MSFT, and Alphabet GOOGL, the third-quarter 2025 results reflect encouraging progress. Year to date (YTD), Apple shares are down 9.2%, underperforming the broader Zacks Computer and Technology sector's return of 13.5% and the trio. YTD, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon shares have appreciated 23.8%, 6.2% and 0.9%, respectively. Apple Stock's YTD Performance AAPL shares are now trading above the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, indicating a bullish trend. Apple Trades Above 50-day and 200-day SMAs Apple Intelligence Features to boost AAPL Stock's Prospects In April, Apple expanded the availability of Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 updates in new languages, including French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (simplified), as well as localized English for Singapore and India. At the end of 2025, Apple Intelligence will be available in eight more languages: Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (traditional) and Vietnamese. At this year's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced new Apple Intelligence features like Live Translation, updates to visual intelligence, as well as enhancements to Image Playground and Genmoji. Shortcuts can access Apple Intelligence directly. Developers also get access to the on-device large language model, which is at the core of Apple Intelligence. The latest features are now available for testing and are expected to be generally available this fall with supported devices. Apple is expanding Services with AutoMix and Lyrics Translation features in Apple Music. Sing will allow users to transform their iPhones into a handheld microphone for Apple TV, while preferred routes and visited places in Apple Map make navigation easier for users. Apple Intelligence is now getting added to Apple Wallet, and users can make purchases with Apple Pay. Powered by Apple Intelligence, Apple Wallet can now automatically identify, summarize and display order tracking details from emails sent from merchants or delivery carriers. Meanwhile, Apple Pay expands the ability to pay with rewards and installments to in-store purchases for added flexibility and choice. Apple's U.S. Investments to Appease Trump, Escape Tariffs Apple now plans to spend $600 billion across the United States over the next four years. The plan includes the American Manufacturing Program (AMP), which is dedicated to bringing more of Apple's supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the U.S. AMP partners include Corning, Coherent, GlobalWafers America, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments, Samsung, GlobalFoundries, Amkor and Broadcom. Apple currently partners with thousands of suppliers across all 50 states in the U.S., supporting more than 450,000 supplier and partner jobs. In the next four years, AAPL plans to directly hire 20,000 people in the U.S. in roles including research and development, silicon engineering, software development, and AI and machine learning. Apple's accelerating U.S. investments are expected to appease U.S. President Donald Trump, who has criticized the iPhone maker's strategy of manufacturing iPhones sold in the United States in other countries, including India. The latest announcement is expected to help Apple escape potential tariff threats. Tariffs are currently expected to have a negative impact of roughly $1.1 billion in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Apple expects gross margin between 46% and 47% for the current quarter compared with a gross margin of 46.5% in the fiscal third quarter. Apple's Q4 Revenues to Grow Amid Tariff Threats Apple expects the September quarter's (fourth-quarter fiscal 2025) net sales to grow mid to high single digits on a year-over-year basis. The company expects the Services year-over-year growth rate to be similar to that of the June quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Apple's fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 revenues is pegged at $100.37 billion, indicating 5.73% growth over the figure reported in the year-ago quarter. The consensus mark for earnings has increased 8.1% to $1.73 per share over the past 30 days, indicating 5.5% growth from the figure reported in the year-ago quarter. Apple Shares are Overvalued AAPL stock is not so cheap, as the Value Score of F suggests a stretched valuation at this moment. Apple is trading at a forward 12-month Price/Sales (P/S) of 7.93X compared with the sector's 6.78X, Amazon's 3.14X and Alphabet's 6.79X. However, Microsoft's P/S of 11.91 is higher than Apple. Price/Sales (F12M) Conclusion Apple is expected to benefit from growing adoption of Apple Intelligence and expanding features. The company's investments in expanding its manufacturing footprint in the United States are expected to help lower tariff-related headaches. Investors already holding AAPL shares should continue to do so based on these factors. However, stretched valuation is a concern for prospective investors. AAPL currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggesting that it may be wise to wait for a more favorable entry point in the stock.
