Siliguri: Govt Railway Police (GRP) and
Railway Protection Force
(RPF) officers on Monday rescued 56 women from the Patna-bound Capital Express at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station and arrested two persons on suspicion of trafficking.
The accused, identified as Jitendra Kumar Paswan and Chandrima Kaur, were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded in police custody for seven days.
Around 9pm on Monday, GRP and RPF personnel noticed a large group of women boarding the train. None of the women had valid train tickets, but all had their coach and berth numbers written on their hands.
According to a GRP officer, the women — hailing from Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Dooars region of north Bengal — were told they were going to Bengaluru to get employment at a phone manufacturing company.
However, the train they had been put on was headed to Patna.

The officers then questioned Paswan and Kaur, who were accompanying the women. The duo's statements were inconsistent and they failed to provide any documents verifying the existence of the company, following which they were arrested.
"The women, aged between 18 and 21, were given hotel management training for three months and were told they would get a job at a mobile phone company.

All 56 are students," said GRP deputy SP Parijat Sarkar. "Only after a thorough investigation will we be able to comment on what appears to be a major case of attempted trafficking," he added.
All 56 women were taken to NJP GRP police station, where their families arrived to take them home.
The father of one them said: "She got a call claiming there would be a three-month training programme in Siliguri, after which the girls would get jobs. We had no idea that it could be a trap. This has taught us a hard lesson."

New Delhi railway station stampede was triggered by luggage dropped by passenger, minister tells Parl

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that February 15 stampede tragedy at New Delhi railway station was triggered by a large piece of luggage falling from a passenger's head read more Visuals during stampede at New Delhi Railway station A tragic stampede at New Delhi railway station in February, in which 18 lives were lost, was triggered by a large piece of luggage falling from a passenger's head, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament on Friday (August 1). The incident, described as the deadliest railway station tragedy since Mumbai's Elphinstone Road stampede in 2017, which killed 23 people, had prompted widespread criticism and calls for systemic changes. What happened on the night of February 15? The chaos unfolded on February 15 around 8:48 pm on a foot-over-bridge connecting platforms 14 and 15, during the evening rush hour between 9:15 and 9:30 pm. Thousands of passengers had flooded the station, many of whom were heading to Bihar-bound trains during the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj. 'There was a big headload falling from one of the passengers and the pressure was passed on to the stairs of platforms 14/15, resulting in the tripping of passengers,' Vaishnaw explained in his parliamentary reply. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The narrow 25-foot-wide footbridge, already congested with passengers carrying large headloads, became a deadly bottleneck. Post-mortem reports confirmed that the victims succumbed to traumatic asphyxia. A committee investigating the incident found that while crowd management protocols were in place, the passenger density on the foot-over-bridge had surged after 8:15 pm. Railway records, cited by Hindustan Times, revealed that 7,600 unreserved tickets were sold that evening, with sales peaking at 1,500 per hour as crowds began gathering from 6:00 pm. The committee noted that the heavy headloads carried by many passengers significantly hindered movement on the narrow bridge, contributing to the catastrophe. Railway experts have sharply criticised the incident, with some labelling it a 'completely avoidable incident' and a case of 'classic mismanagement.' Indian Railways implements preventive measures In response, Indian Railways is rolling out extensive measures to prevent future tragedies at 73 stations identified as prone to heavy passenger rushes. Minister Vaishnaw outlined plans for permanent holding areas outside these stations, building on temporary arrangements tested during the 2024 festival season. Pilot projects are already underway at key stations, including New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Ghaziabad. Under the new system, passengers will only access platforms when their trains arrive, reducing congestion within stations. To further enhance safety, Indian Railways will implement full access control at these 73 stations. Passengers with confirmed reserved tickets will gain direct platform access, while those without tickets or on waiting lists will be directed to designated waiting areas outside. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Unauthorised entry points will be sealed to ensure tighter control. Additionally, narrow foot-over-bridges will be replaced with wider 12-meter and 6-meter designs equipped with ramps, a model proven effective during the recent Mahakumbh festival.

Devil's Den murders row: Former teacher a 'monster'; tickled little girls and gave 'lot of special treatment'

A former primary school teacher accused of brutally murdering a married couple in front of their two daughters at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas had previously displayed alarming behaviour towards young girls at a school in Texas, a concerned parent has claimed. Andrew James McGann, 28, is accused of stabbing Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, to death on Saturday, while their daughters, aged 9 and 7, fled the scene unharmed. Authorities said McGann later confessed to the killing and was charged with capital murder following a five-day manhunt. In an interview with New York Post on Friday, Zacharri Polyak, whose son attended Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas, when McGann was a teacher there, alleged deeply troubling past behaviour. 'This monster was around our children,' he said. Polyak recalled that McGann once put a little girl on his lap and said 'things like, 'I wish I could date you, I wish you could be my girlfriend,' just really nasty like grooming behavior.' He also claimed McGann showed 'a lot of special treatment to girls in particular,' adding, 'He was giving them candy, bringing them Sonic drinks, playing tag with them, tickling them, just really suspect behavior.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Lewisville Independent school district, which oversees Donald Elementary, told New York Post that McGann was placed on administrative leave during the 2022–2023 academic year 'following concerns related to classroom management, professional judgement, and student favoritism.' However, the district said an internal investigation 'found no evidence of inappropriate behavior with students.' McGann resigned in May 2023. Polyak criticised the school's response, 'It should have been an immediate firing with reports to Child Protective Services,' he said. Another parent, Sierra Marcum, whose son was in McGann's fourth-grade class, described him as distant and disengaged. '[He was] pretty cold. You could ask him a question, and he would give you a one-word response,' she told WFAA. 'Overall, just pretty disinterested in his students.' Marcum said she raised concerns with the school after her son came home visibly upset. 'Eventually, he told me that he and some other classmates had noticed that Mr. McGann was very touchy and showed a lot of favoritism to certain girls in the class,' she said. 'I guess [the murder allegations] did surprise me, because while I thought he was off, I never thought he was violent.' McGann was later hired for the 2023–2024 school year at Spring Creek Elementary in Oklahoma. The district said McGann passed all legally mandated national background checks, and there had been no disciplinary issues during his time there. He had also secured a job at Springdale Public Schools in Arkansas, where he was due to start teaching in a week. Superintendent Jared Cleveland confirmed McGann's hiring, but stressed that he 'has not at any time come into contact with Springdale students or the families we serve,' according to 5 News. The shocking murders took place on a hiking trail in the Arkansas state park. Authorities say McGann ambushed the Brink couple, stabbing them to death while their daughters escaped and raised the alarm. He was eventually located and arrested mid-haircut at a local barbershop. McGann appeared in court on Friday (local time) and was ordered to be held without bail. Investigators have not yet established a motive for the killings.

Services at AIIMS-Patna affected as docs go on indefinite strike over MLA's ‘high-handedness'

An FIR has been lodged against the MLA by the police, but no copy has been provided to the RDA officially. As per legal opinion, the FIR is weak, lacking the strength and sections necessary to ensure strict legal action against the perpetrators, it said. According to a press statement issued by the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA), AIIMS-Patna, on Friday, 'The RDA expresses deep disappointment and anguish over the lack of action by the administration following the violent and traumatic incident that occurred on Wednesday, when MLA Chetan Anand, his wife and their armed guards breached hospital security, physically assaulted staff, and threatened resident doctors with firearms within the Trauma Centre premises.' 'Our indefinite strike will continue until further notice… We call upon all residents to remain united and firm. Our stand is for justice, safety, and dignity of every healthcare worker,' it said. Patna, Aug 1 (PTI) Healthcare services were affected at AIIMS-Patna on Friday as resident doctors went on an 'indefinite strike' in protest against the alleged high-handedness of Sheohar MLA Chetan Anand. On the other hand, non-bailable charges have been filed against resident doctors, who were victims, not aggressors, on the basis of a complaint filed by the MLA against members of the RDA, it alleged. No official statement or press release has been issued by the AIIMS administration condemning the incident or standing in support of its doctors, it said. Emergency, OPD and other services were affected as a result of the strike. On the other hand, Anand, the RJD-turned-JD(U) legislator, had lodged a police complaint, alleging that staffers of AIIMS-Patna misbehaved with him and his wife during a visit to the hospital on Wednesday night. On Thursday, he told PTI that he and his wife were mistreated by hospital staffers when they went to visit a supporter admitted to the facility. 'My wife and I went to see one of my supporters admitted at AIIMS on Wednesday night. I was not allowed to enter the hospital with my security guard. This prompted my wife to intervene,' he said. 'At that moment, other staff members came and started misbehaving with my wife. They literally thrashed her. I had to intervene. My wife sustained injuries to her wrist and back. I was also held hostage by the staffers for some time. Finally, we went to the local police station and lodged a complaint,' he added. The MLA's mother, Lovely Anand, is the JD(U) MP from the Sheohar Lok Sabha seat. Meanwhile, an FIR was registered on the basis of the complaint filed by AIIMS-Patna administration on Thursday night, said Patna City SP (West) Bhanu Pratap Singh, who visited the hospital and interacted with the protesting resident doctors. 'Earlier, a complaint related to the incident was filed by the opponent party as well. The matter is being investigated,' he added. PTI PKD ACD This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
