CBS Sports analyst drops bold prediction for BYU Basketball next season
Most analysts have BYU as a top 10 team going into the 2025-26 college basketball season. Jon Rothstein believes this could be a historic year for Young's team and sees a deep tournament run on the horizon. "I think if you're a BYU fan now and you went to the Sweet 16 without a talent like [AJ Dybantsa], the goal and the realistic expectations for BYU should be to go to a Final Four. And I don't even think that's anything that should blink at," Rothstein said on his podcast.
BYU not only has Dybantsa, but Baylor transfer Rob Wright will be one of the best guards in the nation. Richie Saunders is a proven All-Big 12 talent and put off the NBA to "run it back" in Provo. While Dybantsa already said he's out after the upcoming season, he'll be a leader on this team and a likely candidate to be the top overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

If BYU can reach the final phase of March Madness, it would be unprecedented. The Cougars have only experienced one Elite Eight run under the current NCAA tournament format. Danny Ainge led the Cougars to the best result in 1981. Since then, the 2011 team came close with a 83-74 Sweet 16 overtime loss to No. 2 seeded Florida.

Needless to say, the expectations are high for BYU this year. If they come together and play outstanding basketball, the sky's the limit. It's not unrealistic to say the Cougars could be the team to beat in the Big 12.

Thunder headlining NBA's opening night, Christmas schedule for this season
NEW YORK (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder felt slighted last season when they were left off the NBA's Christmas schedule. That won't be an issue this year. MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the NBA champion Thunder will be working at home for Christmas this season, playing host to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs as part of the league's annual Dec. 25 quintupleheader. The other Christmas games, released by the NBA on Tuesday: Cleveland at New York, Houston at LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and Dallas visiting Golden State, and Minnesota playing at Denver. Some NBA Cup games are scheduled to be released Wednesday and the full schedule — 80 of the 82 games for all teams — is to be released on Thursday. The remaining two games for each club will be filled in December based on how teams fare in the NBA Cup. 'They make the schedule. We play it,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said last season, when asked about his club not being picked for the Dec. 25 lineup. 'Our players, I know, would have liked to play on Christmas because that's such a staple day in the NBA season. But we can't control that.' Well, they sort of did control their Christmas scheduling fate this season. The NBA champions typically get invited to play on Christmas the following season; Oklahoma City beat Indiana in a seven-game NBA Finals last season. The Eastern Conference champion Pacers are among the Christmas snubs this year, after losing Tyrese Haliburton to an Achilles tear that will sideline him for the entirety of this season and seeing Myles Turner opt to sign with Milwaukee in free agency. The Knicks will be playing their 58th Christmas game, extending their NBA record. The first Christmas game in league history was at Madison Square Garden in 1947. Boston, Philadelphia and Phoenix played on Christmas last season and didn't make the Dec. 25 cut this season, replaced by Cleveland (which was the East's No. 1 seed), Houston (which landed Kevin Durant in an offseason blockbuster from the Suns) and the Thunder. Cleveland and the Thunder are playing on Christmas for the first time since 2018. The Rockets have a Christmas game for the first time since 2019. James, if he plays on the holiday, will be making his 20th Christmas appearance in his record 23 NBA season. Only 12 NBA franchises have 20 Christmas games, and James could soon have that many as a player. And it'll be a big NBA holiday in Texas: All three of the state's teams are playing on Christmas for the first time. Opening night NBC's return to the NBA broadcast world officially starts with opening night on Oct. 21, when the Thunder will receive their championship rings before playing host to Durant and the Rockets in the first game of the season. That will be followed by Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Golden State taking on James, Luka Doncic and the Lakers in the second game of the NBC doubleheader. Those are the only two games on opening night. MLK Day Peacock and NBC will have four games on Jan. 19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The matchups: Milwaukee at Atlanta on Peacock at 1 p.m. Eastern, followed by three games on NBC: Oklahoma City at Cleveland at 2:30 p.m. Eastern, Dallas at New York at 5 p.m. Eastern and Boston at Detroit at 8 p.m. Eastern. Memphis, which typically plays on the holiday, is not this season. The Grizzlies will be returning from Europe, after facing Orlando on Jan. 15 in Berlin and Jan. 18 in London. ___ AP NBA:

Braves News: Atlanta Takes on Mets, Michael Harris II, More
After what should have been their most fun off day in a while, the Braves will head to New York to take on the struggling New York Mets. Yes, the Mets currently do hold the last NL Wild Card spot currently, but they have had some lackluster performances in August, most recently vs. the red hot Brewers. It would be fun to see the Braves continue that trend to start the week. Of course, a key reason to the Braves recent success has been the play of Michael Harris II. Throughout his career, this has been the time year where Harris II really excels, though not his current level of production since the All-Star Break. However, Harris II has struggled in his career against the Mets, especially at Citi Field. If Harris II were to find success there this week, that would add even more validity to the idea he has truly turned a corner in his production. Braves News One bright spot of this season is that after this weekend it is again crystal clear that the Braves mastery of the Marlins continues. has their updated prospect rankings following the 2025 MLB Draft, including the Braves. MLB News The Padres are now just one game back in the NL West as their trade deadline additions are paying off. Josh Hader of the Astros is undergoing further evaluation on his shoulder. Shane McClanahan unfortunately will undergo another medical procedure to address nerve issues in his arm.

LaJohntay Wester's preseason debut performance earns top grade from Pro Football Focus
Former Colorado Buffaloes headlined Week 1 of the NFL preseason. From Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter to BJ Green and Xavier Weaver, the Buffs stood out on the gridiron. Perhaps the highlight of the weekend was Baltimore Ravens wide receiver LaJohntay Wester, who returned a punt for an 87-yard touchdown. Wester also caught two passes for 41 yards. The performance garnered high praise from league circles, including Pro Football Focus (PFF), which graded Wester as the top rookie receiver from preseason Week 1. PFF gave the former Colorado star an 84.1 grade, making Wester the 12th highest graded receiver last week. Wester is coming off his lone season at Colorado, where he racked up 74 catches for 931 yards and 10 touchdowns. He became an immediate star for the Buffs and is now looking to become a star for the Ravens. It is only one game, and a preseason game at that, but Wester made an impression that warrants a place on Baltimore's 53-man roster. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
