Dominican Navy resumes search after migrant boat capsizes
SANTO DOMINGO : Rescue teams on Saturday resumed their search in difficult conditions for some 20 migrants missing after a boat capsized off the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic.
The death toll from the Friday capsizing rose to six, Fernando Castillo, provincial director of Dominican civil defence, told AFP.
The boat was headed for the US territory of Puerto Rico carrying between 40 and 50 people, with 17 rescued.
Among the bodies recovered so far were a woman, three men and a child. The deceased are Dominican and Haitian nationals.
Strong waves, large amounts of sargassum seaweed and dust clouds blowing in from the Sahara desert were hampering the search efforts, said civil defence director Juan Salas.
'Today the biggest concern is the sargassum, which makes it difficult to see any body or any element in the water,' the official told AFP.
The Dominican navy said the migrants 'were trying to travel illegally to Puerto Rico' from the eastern end of the Dominican Republic, near Punta Cana.
They were being ferried in a so-called 'yola' boat, which is generally constructed from wood or fibreglass and does not comply with safety regulations, according to authorities.
Migrants pay as much as US$7,000 for a one-way trip to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with crisis-torn Haiti.
The irregular migration route has become increasingly popular in the last decade.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Twenty children, including a 15-day-old baby girl, were rescued from a warehouse and a house operating as an unregistered learning centre in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, last week. Penang social development and welfare committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said the rescue operation was carried out by the social welfare department (JKM) with the cooperation of the police, following public complaints. 'Those rescued were aged between 15 days and 16 years, comprising 10 boys and 10 girls. 'Initial investigations revealed that 12 children, including the baby, did not have birth certificates. 'Six had valid documents but no parents or guardians, while two have since been placed in the care of close family members,' Lim told a press conference in George Town today. She was quoted by Kosmo as saying a 20-year-old woman, believed to be the biological mother of the baby, was also 'rescued' during the operation. All those rescued are believed to be of various nationalities and primarily spoke Mandarin, with limited proficiency in Malay. Lim said the children are believed to have been deprived of basic necessities, including adequate food, clothing and safe shelter. 'The warehouse was in a filthy condition and completely unsuitable for habitation, especially by children. 'It was neither a care home nor a registered learning centre. Children should not have been there,' she said. During the raid, five adults believed to be acting as caretakers were also found on the premises. They were local individuals, aged over 18, and are currently being investigated by the police. 'Health screenings have also been conducted at Seberang Jaya Hospital with the involvement of JKM psychological officers,' Lim said, adding that a temporary custody order for the children had been granted by the court. Lim said her office had received several public complaints since the end of last year about the centre. However, earlier inspections at the address found no children present.

24 houses destroyed by fire in Tuaran

(Tuaran Civil Defence Force pic) TUARAN : Twenty-four houses and a vehicle were destroyed in a fire at Kampung Mengkabong here yesterday. Tuaran fire and rescue station chief Nor Amit said there were no reports of injuries. 'The fire station received a distress call at 3.34pm, and 24 firefighters, including those from the Kota Kinabalu and Putatan fire and rescue stations, were despatched to the scene. 'The team used water from fire rescue tenders and water tankers to put out the fire. They ended the operation at 10.38pm. The cause of the fire and losses are still under investigation,' he said in a statement today. The Tuaran district disaster management committee secretariat said 114 victims from 35 families were affected by the fire. 'A temporary relief centre was opened at Dewan Seri Sulaman here at 7pm. The civil defence force is still collecting information on the victims,' it said statement.

Police: Missing crash victim found walking by roadside, clad only in underwear, 1km from Kulim crash site
KULIM, July 26 — A crash victim who was reported missing after the car he was driving skidded and caught fire on Jalan Batu Puteh-Labu Besar near here yesterday, was found safe early today. Kulim police chief Supt Zulkifli Azizan said the victim, identified as Mohd Solehin Abd Latif, 28, was found on the roadside in Batu Puteh heading towards Labu Besar. 'At 8 am today, while police were patrolling the crash site, a 39-year-old man reported that a man clad in only his underwear was seen on the roadside walking towards Labu Besar. 'Based on the information, the search and rescue (SAR) team went straight to the location of the discovery and confirmed that the man was indeed the victim they were looking for,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. According to him, the crash victim was found at 8.40 am, having wandered off about 1km from the incident site. 'The victim's condition was stable, with only minor scratches on his body. He was then taken to the Sungai Kob police station before being handed over to his family. The search was officially called off at 10 am,' he said. Earlier, the victim was reported missing after his Perodua Kancil car was involved in a crash and found burnt in a ditch on the roadside at 5.30 am yesterday. The victim was said to have driven out alone, and only his wallet, identity card and phone were found at the crash site. The victim's family is said to have also scoured the nearest hospitals, including the Baling Hospital and Kulim Hospital, but were unable to trace him. — Bernama
